Virginie Saverys is a lawyer, not a winemaker. When she took over Avignonesi in 2009, it came as a surprise to many – and for her the beginning of a radical conviction. No herbicides, no pesticides, no additives in the cellar, no compromises. Today, Avignonesi is the largest biodynamically certified winery in Italy – over 170 hectares on the hills around Montepulciano, organic since 2016, biodynamic since 2019. What began in 1974 as a traditional Tuscan winery has become one of the most consistent sustainability projects in Italian viticulture under its leadership.
The Rosso di Montepulciano is the introduction to this universe – and it explains a lot about Avignonesi's philosophy. 100% Prugnolo Gentile, the local Sangiovese clone of Montepulciano, from the estate's younger vineyards. Fermentation takes place with the estate's own Pied de Cuve: natural yeasts that Avignonesi selects from its own vineyards and grows separately for each site – a living bond between man, vineyard and wine. Eight to twelve days of maceration in steel, then at least six months in large Slavonian oak barrels. No significant use of wood, only gentle ageing.
Bright ruby red in the glass with a violet tinge. The nose is fresh and inviting: violets, strawberry, blueberry, a hint of wild myrtle and dark cherry. Juicy and lively on the palate – fine, well-integrated tannins, fresh Sangiovese acidity that keeps the wine moving and a long finish with the typical cherry flavour of Prugnolo Gentile. SUPERIORE.DE
