In 2009, the Belgian entrepreneur Virginie Saverys took over Tenuta Avignonesi – and transformed it into one of Tuscany’s most ambitious biodynamic estates. Biodyvin-certified, organic, vegan, B Corp: at Avignonesi, wine is understood as an expression of living soils – and Montepulciano as a place that reflects this with exceptional clarity. The Vino Nobile comes from vineyards on sedimentary soils of marine origin – calcareous, with varying proportions of clay and sand from the Pleistocene and Pliocene periods, planted between 1995 and 2017 at altitudes of 270 to 375 metres. Fermentation takes place using yeasts from the estate’s own ‘pied de cuve’: the first batch of grapes is harvested in advance to select the naturally occurring yeasts on the skins. A process that deepens the connection between the wine and the vineyard and anchors the sense of place. 20 to 25 days’ maceration, followed by 18 months in large casks and tonneaux.
A brilliant ruby red with violet hues. On the nose, red berries, pomegranate, violets and a hint of vanilla. Lively and well-balanced on the palate, with ripe cherry, plum jam and a hint of liquorice on final. Fresh acidity, silky tannins and a long finish. The winery’s hallmark, impressive year after year. "The 2022 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is darkly floral and perfumed, with crushed blackberries, allspice and rosemary. Ripe red and black fruits find balance through a tart citrus twang. Fine tannins impart poise on the long, youthfully tense finish. This punches well above its weight—bury a few in the cellar and reap the rewards." Vinous
"A multi-layered and complex wine with fresh, elegant aromas of balsamic vinegar, eucalyptus, bergamot, liquorice, bark and cherry stones. Elegant on the palate too, with a medium to full body, high but well-integrated acidity, fine, chalky tannins and a firm, refined finish. Suitable for drinking now or for ageing." James Suckling
