With his Sancaba, Carlo Franchetti has proven that Tuscany has great Pinot Noir terroir – cool, mineral, Burgundian in elegance. But great Pinot Nero requires patience and a high price. With Petit Sancaba, Carlo created the little brother in 2022: an accessible, fairly priced entry into his Pinot world, vinified from the youngest vines of the vineyard planted in 2018 and from the second selection of the older plots. 25 per cent whole-cluster fermentation gives the wine structure and complexity, while ageing partly in concrete and partly in used tonneaux preserves the clarity of the fruit.

The result is surprising: only 13.0% alcohol by volume, a light ruby red colour, a freshness and dynamism reminiscent of Burgundian village wines. The nose reveals crisp cherry, redcurrant, wild strawberry, floral notes of wild rose and subtle spice. On the palate, Petit Sancaba dances like a ballerina – light-footed, elegant, with silky tannins and a salty minerality that comes from the shell limestone and slate soils at an altitude of 650 metres. Carlo lays straw between the rows to soften the Tuscan sun's reflection – a detail that characterises the cool style. The final remains fresh, with sour cherry and Mediterranean herbs. "Made from the estate's youngest Pinot Noir vines, planted in 2018, plus some second-selection fruit from the other vineyards, Petit Sancaba is vinified in steel vats with 25% whole cluster grapes, then aged primarily in cement with a portion in used tonneaux. The 2024 is floral and inviting, with raspberry and violet tones. In the mouth it's precise and fresh, with lovely balance and a lifted, vertical mouthful of fresh red fruits and spice.
