In the amphitheatre of the Tuscan hills of Castellina lies a single vineyard site called Il Poggiale, whose history dates back to 1968, when Paolo Panerai united four historic Poderi into a visionary project. Here, on the limestone soils between 350 and 400 metres above sea level, only Sangioveto thrives – the noblest local variety of Sangiovese – supplemented by only a few per cent of the autochthonous Canaiolo and Colorino varieties.

Intense ruby red in colour with lively reflections, which already indicates concentration. The bouquet opens with the classic violet notes of Chianti Classico, followed by dark cherry flavours and a mineral depth that seems to speak directly from the chalky subsoil. The palate reveals the true greatness of this cru: fresh acidity and juicy minerality dominate the attack, while a velvety texture unfolds in the centre of the palate, supported by ripe but never intrusive tannins. The finish is remarkably long, in which the fruity notes blossom once again and leave behind a balsamic elegance.

Il Poggiale is more than just a Chianti Classico Riserva – it is the essence of what Sangioveto is capable of achieving on this special terroir.
