In the hallowed halls of Casòn Hirschprunn, where history and innovation meet in the vaults of the 13th century, a red wine is created that epitomises the future of South Tyrolean viticulture. Here, in the middle of the 30 hectares of biodynamic vineyards between 230 and 360 metres above sea level, Alois Lageder ventured a visionary experiment in the 1980s: the cultivation of Tannat, an exotic grape variety from south-west France that proved to be exceptionally suitable for the Alpine future in the face of climate change. "Negli ultimi anni, ci siamo appassionati sempre di più al Tannat" – the Lageder family confesses their growing passion for this exceptional variety, which is immediately recognisable in the vineyard thanks to its characteristic red leaf stalks. What began as an experimental curiosity developed into a philosophy: not to celebrate the typicality of individual grape varieties, but to let the unique terroir of a vineyard speak for itself – a guiding principle based on the great châteaux of the Bordelais.

The Casòn Rosso 2019 embodies this vision in perfect form. 70% Tannat forms the powerful backbone of this exceptional blend, complemented by 30% other varieties that interpret the terroir of the sandy, stony Dolomite soils. The biodynamic Demeter cultivation of the 16 to 50-year-old vines follows the cosmic rhythms, while the vinification reveals the highest level of craftsmanship: Spontaneous maceration with varying proportions of whole grapes in wooden barrels, followed by 18 months of ageing in large and small wooden barrels.

The result is a revelation in cherry red with violet reflections – a wine that combines intense flavours of blackberries and plums with refined notes of leather, tea and smoke. Powerful and compact on the palate, with a structure that harmoniously balances fruit, acidity and elegance.
