A different location, a different profile: Contrada Calderana Sottana comes from a special place. In the Calderana Sottana sub-zone, south-east of the summit, where the altitude begins and the soil consists of fine volcanic loam and sand, vines take root at over 700 metres, basking in the early morning sun, and shaped at night by cool temperatures and high-altitude winds – a terroir that fosters both intensity and freshness in equal measure. Made from 100% Nerello Mascalese, traditionally trained using the Alberello method, the wine undergoes controlled fermentation and a short maceration period, followed by ageing for around 12 months in tonneaux. This ageing process is regarded as a delicate art – it shapes and emphasises the wine’s character without overpowering it.

In the glass, Contrada Calderana Sottana displays a clear ruby red colour with a hint of lustre, as if the glass itself were vibrating in unison. The nose opens with effortless elegance: redcurrants, cherry, rose petal, followed by a hint of mineral smoke, lavender and a lively, salty note. On the palate, it is fresh, with a fine grip, lively acidity and pronounced yet velvety tannins. The texture is clean, almost linear, yet full of energy; the finish is straightforward, salty and mineral, tending towards both stillness and concentration in equal measure.
