Centuries ago, a private road led from the Castello of the noble Falletti family down to this vineyard. Today, there is no longer a road here, but a path through a jungle-like thicket – biodiversity as Luca Roagna understands it. When the family acquired these seven hectares in Castiglione Falletto in 1989, a long-cherished dream came true: a Barolo vineyard on a par with the legendary Pajè estates in Barbaresco. Even more: a monopoly. The vineyard lies on the south-eastern slope below the Rocche di Castiglione, protected by the rock above and four hectares of forest with a stream from the Bussia di Monforte below. The soils tell the oldest story of Barolo – marine sediments from the Helvetia, the geological formation shared only by Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga and Monforte. Six micro-parcels are differentiated by alternating layers of white limestone, grey and blue marl, interspersed with iron. The oldest Nebbiolo vines date back to 1937.
Bright cherry red with a fine rusty lustre heralds a Barolo with a darker base than the Barbareschi, but which is stylistically seamlessly part of the family. Juniper, allspice and black pepper open, followed by cool sweet cherry and morello cherry. Blood, iron and delicate smoke add metallic, earthy depth, while light tobacco and laurel add spicy accents. On the palate, the athletic tension that characterises Pira: broad, fine-grained tannins, muscular yet polished, carried by stony juiciness. Power without weight, substance without opulence. Bacon fat, wet stone and vibrant length on the finish. A Barolo that grips without ever losing its elegance. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2020 Barolo Pira is a powerful, tightly wound young Barolo. Dried herbs, incense, licorice, tobacco and crushed autumn leaves add layers of nuance. This starts open with a bit of coaxing, suggesting a few years in bottle or a good bit air will do the trick. The tannins are insistent, but also polished." Vinous
"This red wine is like a laser, but also juicy in the middle of the palate, with flavours of cherries, cranberries, rose hips, menthol and minerals. It is characterised by its harmony, complexity and length, with an aftertaste that just won't quit." Wine Spectator
