Back then, a dowry changed everything. In 1929, a triangular plot of land changed hands – not through purchase, but through marriage. Since then, Montefico has belonged to the Roagna family, longer than any other vineyard in their portfolio. Almost a century later, this quarter of a hectare remains the most intimate chapter in their history. In the Piedmontese dialect, this plot is known as "Mont der fi" – the hill over there, towards Neive. The small triangle lies exactly in the centre of the amphitheatre, at 230 metres, overlooking the neighbouring village. The soils, consisting of calcareous marl with a high proportion of active limestone, are among the oldest in Barbaresco – the result of seventy million years of marine sedimentation. The vines, all over 50 years old, are deeply rooted in this history. Of the family's four "Vecchie Viti", Montefico is the one with the most intense bouquet.
Wine Advocate described it as having "particularly fragrant aromas" – and indeed, a potpourri of cherry, mint, cedarwood and sandalwood unfolds in the glass, interlaced with pipe tobacco and damp autumn woodland soil. On the palate, one finds that focused structure which only extreme ripeness on the vine can achieve: Montefico is harvested last, with phenolic ripeness being the order of the day here. Velvety tannins, vibrant acidity, and a final of extraordinary length. 1,000 bottles. A dowry that has been yielding returns since 1929. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Montefico Vecchie Viti shows a lean, transparent appearance with beautiful aromas of pressed lilac, ash, crushed stone and wild berry. This wine consistently delivers a level of aromatic intensity that is both graceful and beautifully balanced. The finish is long and polished with delicate mineral finesse that lingers effortlessly across the palate." Wine Advocate
"Subtle and floral, with aromas of dried roses and orange peel. Medium- to full-bodied with firm, velvety tannins, a slightly dusty texture, crisp acidity and an umami finish." James Suckling
"With plenty of ripe cherry and peppery spice, and a fine texture despite its light profile, this red wine is juicy, resonant and full of lively acidity. The tannins are firm and supportive, and the finish combines light fruit, tar, minerals and spicy undergrowth notes." Wine Spectator
"The Barbaresco Montefico Vecchie Viti 2020 is one of the most reserved wines in this range. But then again, this is Montefico. Strong spicy and mineral notes take centre stage. Mint, sweet pipe tobacco and sage unfold first, whilst the fruit remains in the background. Lively yet fine-grained tannins characterise the mid-palate and the finish. This is such a distinctive wine. A classic Montefico through and through. Chalk, dried herbs, dried flowers and a hint of earthiness lead into a pronounced, salty finish. Outstanding." Vinous
