    Lessona was not a blank slate in the 19th century. On the hills around Biella, at the foot of the Monte Rosa massif, Nebbiolo wines grew that were prized throughout Europe – before phylloxera, two world wars and the textile industry emptied the vineyards and forced an entire region into a deep slumber. When Paolo De Marchi returned to the castle of Lessona in 1999, he found a calendar on the wall, dated July 1921 – since then, he and his son Luca have done the impossible: brought Lessona back to the present.

    The Rosso Lessona DOC is the centrepiece of this work. 100% Nebbiolo – here called Spanna, the local dialect name that is older than any appellation rules –from the Ormeggio, Castagnola, Covà and Monfalcone vineyards on those unique marine Pliocene sands that distinguish Lessona from all other Nebbiolo regions in Italy. Soils that were once seabed. Highly acidic, rich in iron, manganese, aluminium and zinc. Perfect drainage for one of the most hail-prone regions in Italy. And a minerality that writes itself directly into the wine.

    The vintage shows a deep, bright ruby red colour. The nose is floral precision: dried rose petals, wild cherry, rosemary, pine needles, a hint of tobacco and dry herbs, with the vibrant salinity of these ancient sea sands in the background. On the palate, this Nebbiolo is what Lessona promises and has rarely delivered: Depth without weight, tannin without harshness, acidity without sharpness. Silky, precise, long.
