The Starderi hill in the municipality of Neive is one of Barbaresco's most renowned sites. The vines are rooted here in limestone-rich marl soils, interspersed with fine clay – a terroir that lends the Nebbiolo structure and warmth. The site enjoys plenty of sunshine, yet the altitude of around 270 metres and the refreshing breeze from the Tanaro ensure freshness and aromatic precision. Traditional whole-bunch fermentation, 20 months' ageing in new barriques, unfiltered bottling.

In the glass, it is a brilliant ruby colour with garnet-red highlights. The bouquet is open and deep: ripe black cherries, blackberries and red plums, underpinned by dried roses, liquorice, nutmeg and a hint of cedar. On the palate, it is more opulent than Valeirano, with silky, ripe tannins, generous fruit and a spicy richness that leads into a long, slightly balsamic finish. Starderi is the most sensuous of the three La Spinetta Barbareschi – powerful yet supple, with that warm character that makes it approachable even when young whilst at the same time guaranteeing great ageing potential. "Indeed, there is an intensity both in colour and aromas. Tar and smoke intertwine with rose, and despite ample raspberry and spicy currant depth of flavour, this weighs in, like many 2023, in the mid-spectrum of the scale – and it is charming for that.
