Albe! ... the poetic name of this Barolo refers to the sky at sunrise, as experienced by the various terroirs of the estate: Coste di Vergne, Fossati and La Volta. These high-altitude sites each produce slightly different dawns, which is symbolically reflected in the harmony of the cuvée. The grapes come from young but ripe Nebbiolo vines and combine the nuances of each parcel to create a flowing, elegant expression. The 2021 vintage is characterised by freshness and balance: Long vegetation phase at ideal temperatures, accompanied by cool nights that preserve intense fruit with lively acidity. The grapes were carefully harvested by hand, each parcel was vinified separately and only combined into a cuvée in the spring before bottling. The wine is matured for around 36 months in large Slavonian oak barrels (40–75 hl) with annual racking – a maturation that allows for depth and harmony.
Visually, the Albe is a clear garnet red with a sparkling cherry centre. The nose is enticing with a finely structured aroma: ripe raspberry, dried rose petals, sweet spice and an elegant rose hint create subtle tonal contrasts. This floral elegance is complemented by herbal freshness, red cherry fruit and fine graphite. On the palate, Albe is impressively refined: silky, integrated tannins and a clear, fresh acidity carry the flavours as if in an atmospheric fabric. The complexity of the different morning orientations is palpable: mineral clarity merges with floral depth and a fruity finish. The finish is long, balanced and noticeably calm – a mature but lively Barolo that unites origin, craft and vintage as if in a mirror image. SUPERIORE.DE
"Sparkling ruby with garnet-red nuances. Elegant bouquet with notes of juicy plums and raspberries, plus graphite, undergrowth and some iodine. Silky on the palate, with precise fruit on a finely woven tannin structure and supporting acidity, slightly dry on the finish." Falstaff
"The Barolo Albe 2021 is bright, aromatic and lively in the glass. Medium-bodied and very refined, the 2021 is a delight. This is one of the more understated vintages I can remember tasting. It is an excellent introduction to this series." Vinous
"This multi-MGA Barolo is made from the estate's younger vines, although the average age is a respectable 30 years. Winemaker Giuseppe Vaira calls it a "blend with immediate drinkability". Indeed, it is already irresistible with its emerging and lively aromas of peppery strawberries, dried violets and crushed allspice. On the palate it is silky and refined, with a clarity of crisp red fruits. The multi-layered tannins support it without overpowering it - it is very seamlessly blended. It promises to reveal even more with a little more time in the bottle." Decanter
"Violets with dried flowers and hints of blueberries and menthol. It has a juicy fruit profile that complements a big tannic structure that finishes with a firm, tightly wound finish and just a hint of shy fruit." James Suckling
"This elegant red wine offers aromas and flavours of strawberries, raspberries, cherries, roses and eucalyptus. Smooth, with slightly grainy tannins, it builds discreetly to the lingering finish." Wine Spectator
"This is Barolo's soul in a glass, capturing the region's magic through carefully blended vineyards. Wild cherries and crushed raspberries dance with fresh mint and bay leaf, while sweet and savory spices swirl beneath. The palate sparks with bright acidity, carrying crunchy red fruits, both fresh and dried, but always vibrant. Fine tannins lay down elegant rails for the wine to travel, showing why Barolo captures the world's imagination." Wine Enthusiast
"The G.D. Vajra 2021 Barolo Albe is a hugely versatile expression of Nebbiolo at an affordable price, offering more value for money than most Barolos on the market. The bouquet focuses on dark berries, pressed flowers and crushed stone. It offers good spiciness across broad lines. The mouthfeel is medium textured and closes with silky, approachable tannins."
