"The new road". This was once a small vineyard on the edge of the historic centre of Barolo, named after the road that connected Barolo with Novello and was actually new at the time. Today, all that remains of this path is a narrow footpath through the vineyards. When the cru vineyard was incorporated into the larger Terlo subzone in 2010, Chiara Boschis could have simply abandoned the name. Instead, she turned it into an idea: Via Nuova was rethought – as an assemblage of six parcels that represent the entire Barolo region in one wine.
Terlo and Liste in Barolo. Ravera di Monforte and Mosconi in Monforte d'Alba. Gabutti and Baudana in Serralunga d'Alba. Three communes, three soil profiles, three characters – all organically farmed, all treated with the same care as the individual vineyards of the estate. 2.5 hectares in total, around 340 metres above sea level, south-eastern exposure.
The elegance of Barolo, the vigour of Monforte, the minerality of Serralunga – come together in a wine that, according to Antonio Galloni, is the firmest of the entire Chiara-Boschis-Barolo range. Via Nuova needs a little time to open – and then it unfolds: dark cherry, plum, pomegranate, lavender, menthol, herbs, black tea. Precise and layered on the palate, carried by lively acidity and firm, fine tannins, with a long, balsamic, salty-mineral final. A wine that carries history – and at the same time tells its own story. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bringing together seven different sites from across the villages of Barolo, Monforte d’Alba and Serralunga d’Alba, Via Nuova represents the estate’s classic Barolo. In the true spirit of the expression, it suggests a sum that is greater than its parts. Scents of earthy tea leaves, tobacco, pressed rose and mint blossom emerge evocatively. The palate is tightly stitched around warm red berries, and while terracotta-like tannins maintain a steady grip, there is enough breathing room for everything to be expressed." Decanter
"The 2022 Barolo Via Nuova is a superb wine for the year. It benefits from a blend of seven vineyards that compensates for many of the extremes of the year. Bright red cherry fruit, blood orange, chalk, mint and white pepper lend notable energy, along with a feeling of translucence that is compelling. Vineyard sites are Terlo, Liste and Paiagallo (Barolo); Gabutti and Baudana (Serralunga) and Ravera di Monforte and Mosconi (Monforte). The blend really does rule in 2022." Vinous
"Outstanding for its pure savoriness on the nose, showing earthy strawberries, peonies, violet candies and restrained blood oranges. Intense. Relaxed on the attack but with firm, dusty tannins and crisp, slightly lifted acidity. The finish is tight and austere yet juicy and balanced. This deserves time for better integration. Try from 2029." James Suckling
