Monforte d'Alba lies in the southern Barolo region, where the soils become heavier, richer in clay and higher in iron content. Those who grow Nebbiolo here produce a different wine to that made to the north and east – one that is more structured, darker and possesses a density that takes time to develop. In 2009, Chiara Boschis purchased a plot in the MGA Mosconi – the most recent addition to the estate's portfolio, and the one with the most intense character. 1.9 hectares at an altitude of 370 to 400 metres, south-facing. The soils are of Helvetic origin – calcareous clay-marl layers in a characteristic grey to slightly warm pink hue, depending on where calcium carbonate and iron shift the composition. In some places, these layers take on a reddish hue, tinged with iron and interspersed with pebbles. It is a soil that lends substance to the Nebbiolo, demands long ageing and produces a kind of vinous power that does not arise in this way in lighter soils. Chiara Boschis was the first Oenologist to obtain organic certification in Barolo. Today she works alongside her brother Giorgio – and the Mosconi bears the hallmark of both.
2022 was a year of exceptional concentration in Monforte. Warm summer months, good water reserves from the winter, and controlled ripening in autumn. Mosconi 2022 demonstrates what this vineyard is capable of in a great vintage. Deep garnet red with a dark core. On the nose, wild cherry, plum, mocha, sage, tar, lavender and spices – dark, complex, multi-layered. On the palate, it is majestically structured, supported by firm yet velvety tannins; dry and multi-layered, with a long, balsamic, mineral final. A Barolo for the next 20 years – anticipation today, fulfilment tomorrow. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2022 Barolo Mosconi is a full-bodied, flavourful wine. Dried herbs, mint, incense, liquorice, tobacco and spices are delicately defined. The underlying tannins are classic of the Mosconi. The 2022 shows good terroir character, but is also quite reserved. It has good energy and vibrancy – enough to make me believe it just needs a little more time in the bottle. Mineral notes prolong the finish." Vinous
"The certified organic Barolo Mosconi is balanced and tight, yet it delivers some of the more shapely and enriched qualities of this warm vintage, especially on the palate. The wine is ethereal and focused, with a detailed aromatic profile of blackcurrant, blue flower and a touch of garden herb. Sweet tannins are expertly tucked in, lending needed structure and angularity without ever feeling dry or bitter, with Mosconi's sun-exposed slopes in Monforte d'Alba contributing to the wine's depth and polished concentration." Wine Advocate
"Selected from the estate's oldest plot in Mosconi, this is the only Barolo from Chiara Boschis that is still aged exclusively in barriques. The cool, fresh site typically experiences significant daily temperature variations, resulting in a powerful wine that requires tempering and, above all, time. The 2021 vintage makes masterful use of this power and potential. A wonderful blend of sweet spices, forest roots and stony minerals conveys a palpable sense of terroir. It is brooding, with juicy acidity and soft tannins that you can really sink your teeth into. Long, structured and enveloping, with dark cherry, plum and a hint of bitter cocoa, this is a complete and compelling package." Decanter
"Tannic and complex, with astonishing depth and minerality. The nose shines with notes of clay, cured meat and a fresh, exquisite blend of sweet violets, redcurrants and blood oranges, along with a subtle hint of liquorice. Full-bodied and well-integrated with substantial tannins, it is ripe, velvety and salty, with crisp acidity and a viscous texture. A graphite finish. Ready to drink from spring onwards, but best after 2026." James Suckling
