In 1862, Luigi Pira founded a business in the village of Barolo that would later bear his name: E. Pira & Figli. The winery survived for generations until the last winemaker in the family died without heirs. The Boschis family took over in 1981. Chiara Boschis, still young at the time, recognised the potential of the name and the terroir and became the driving force behind the Barolo revolution: more freshness, more precision, less heaviness. Today, she cultivates eleven hectares, divided between Barolo, Monforte and Serralunga – and less than one hectare in the most famous single vineyard in the entire region: Cannubi.
0.7 hectares. No more. The parcel lies at 300 metres, exposed to the south to south-west, on the characteristic white limestone soils from the Miocene period – those powdery, light-coloured, mineral-rich layers of the Helvetian period that give Cannubi its unmistakable signature. Nebbiolo clones of the old Michet and Lampia varieties grow here, certified organic and have been cultivated by hand for decades. Annual production barely exceeds 4,000 bottles. The vinification is a clear philosophical statement: all three of the estate's Barolo vineyards are treated identically – spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel tanks, 24 months in lightly toasted French barriques with 30% new wood, a further year in the bottle. No room for cellar effects. The only thing that distinguishes the three wines from one another is the terroir. In Cannubi, this means: elegance, silk and a floral depth that no other vineyard in the region produces in this form.
2022 was a warm, sunny year with early, concentrated ripeness. The Cannubi bears this with composure: more opulence than in cooler vintages, but the limestone soils maintain the freshness and tension. Brilliant garnet red colour. Wild cherry, rosehip, violet, rose blossom, a hint of wax candle and spicy herbs on the nose – complex, layered, of great purity. Creamy and silky on the palate, with perfectly ripe tannins, long persistence and a deep, savoury final. Cannubi is writing its history – and 2022 is a beautiful chapter. SUPERIORE.DE
