In 1862, Luigi Pira founded a business in the village of Barolo that would later bear his name: E. Pira & Figli. The winery survived for generations until the family's last winemaker died without an heir. In 1981, the Boschis family took over. Chiara Boschis, who was still young at the time, recognised the potential of the name and the terroir and became the driving force behind the Barolo revolution: more freshness, more precision, less heaviness. Today she cultivates eleven hectares, divided between Barolo, Monforte and Serralunga – and owns less than one hectare in the most famous single vineyard in the entire wine-growing region: Cannubi.
0.7 hectares. No more. The plot lies at an altitude of 300 metres, facing south to south-west, on the characteristic white limestone soils of the Miocene – those powdery, light-coloured, mineral-rich layers of the Helvetian period that give Cannubi its unmistakable character. Here, Nebbiolo clones of the old "Michet" and "Lampia" varieties are grown; they are certified organic and have been tended by hand for decades. Annual production barely exceeds 4,000 bottles. The winemaking process makes a clear philosophical statement: all three of the estate's Barolo vineyards are treated identically – spontaneous fermentation in stainless-steel tanks, 24 months in lightly toasted French barriques with 30% new oak, followed by a further year in the bottle. There is no scope for cellar-induced effects. The only thing that distinguishes the three wines from one another is the terroir. In Cannubi, this translates as elegance, silkiness and a floral depth that no other vineyard in the region produces in this way.
2022 was a warm, sunny year with early, concentrated ripening. The Cannubi takes this in its stride: more opulence than in cooler vintages, but the limestone soils preserve the freshness and vibrancy. Brilliant garnet red. On the nose, wild cherry, rosehip, violets, rose blossom, a hint of wax candle and spicy herbs – complex, multi-layered and of great purity. Creamy and silky on the palate, with perfectly ripened tannins, long persistence and a deep, salty final. Cannubi is writing its own story – and 2022 is a fine chapter. SUPERIORE.DE
"The certified organic Barolo Cannubi shows the distinctive silkiness that defines this site, a quality linked to the MGA's well-draining soils that tend to produce especially fine-grained tannins and more aromatic, lifted expressions of Nebbiolo. The wine reveals careful aromas of violet, zesty mandarin, crushed stone and subtle iron ore, with those mineral tones carrying clearly to the palate and supporting an excellent mix of tension, depth and elegance. Sourced from organic Nebbiolo clones of Michet and Lampia planted in a tiny 0.7-hectare plot at 300 meters above sea level, the vineyard sits on powdery white limestone soils that have long contributed to Cannubi's reputation for wines that combine finesse with quiet persistence." Wine Advocate
"Deep and reserved, with understated elegance. Aromatic sweet violets mingle with orange peel, redcurrants and strawberries, with a slightly waxy and spicy character. The dense, full-bodied palate is crisp and firm, yet velvety, with subtle, concentrated fruit. It is fresh and long, with a dense finish that is slightly sanguine and salty. Ready to drink now, but best from 2027." James Suckling
