Within Falletto there is a parcel of land that Bruno Giacosa thought of separately early on. Vigna Le Rocche – officially recognised as an independent site within the MGA Falletto, on the upper part of the amphitheatre, exposed south to south-west, with the oldest vines of the entire estate. 47-year-old vines, deeply rooted in the calcareous clay of Serralunga, at more than 400 metres. Less yield, more concentrated grapes, an aroma that is similar to that of the Falletto – and yet surpasses it.

Giacosa made the decision to bottle Le Rocche separately for the first time with the 1997 vintage. Since then, the wine has appeared in every vintage as a separate cuvée – always labelled white, unless Bruna Giacosa decides on Riserva: then the label changes to red, the bottle age doubles and the wine enters a different sphere. 2022 is not a Riserva vintage. But that does not mean that Le Rocche is taking a back seat. Vinification as with the Falletto: destemming, 25 days of spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel tanks, complete malolactic fermentation. Matured for 32 months in large French oak barrels. Then – the subtle difference – ten months of bottle ageing instead of six. Four months more stillness, during which the wine learns what it is.

Intense garnet red colour in the glass. The nose is more complex and deeper than the Falletto: rose petal, ripe fruit, orange peel, tobacco, spices, a hint of black truffle and damp clay – all in one. The palate is full-bodied, creamy, with round tannins and a precision that does not let you forget its origin. The finish is long, spicy, mineral and – and requires a great deal of patience.
