On the steep slopes of Sorano, where the ancient Serravallian soils of Serralunga d'Alba unleash their full geological power, lies Matteo Ascheri's most precious secret: two tiny parcels that together produce no more than 2,800 bottles per vintage and yet embody the essence of what makes a great Barolo. Vigna Coste and Vigna Bricco – the slopes and the summit – are two faces of the same extraordinary medal, united in a wine that only sees the light of day in the very greatest years. Coste & Bricco is Matteo's ultimate homage to the diversity of the Sorano terroir. While Vigna Coste on the slopes delivers the minerality and structure for which Serralunga is famous, Vigna Bricco from the hilltop brings the concentration and aromatic intensity that only the most exposed sites can produce. This combination of two micro-terroirs within a single MGA creates a Barolo of exceptional complexity – a wine that combines both the power and finesse of Serralunga.
2021 was a year of perfection for these two parcels. The extreme temperature fluctuations between day and night, which are characteristic of the high altitudes of Serralunga, gave the grapes the aromatic precision that makes this Barolo so unique. In the glass, the Coste & Bricco 2021 reveals itself in bright garnet red and unfolds a bouquet of beguiling complexity: red fruits and wild berries develop into white liquorice, ash and mineral nuances that tell of the unique geology of Serralunga. The palate reveals the full power of these two micro-locations: powerful and profound, but never overwhelming, with the focussed brightness and rich tannins that give this Barolo a lifespan of 18 to 20 years. This is Matteo Ascheri's masterpiece – a Barolo that represents the pinnacle of his production, it is a wine for the ages, born from two tiny parcels that together create the extraordinary. "The 2021 Barolo Coste & Bricco is a blend of two sub parcels of the Sorano MGA in Serralunga d'Alba. This is a broadly textured and open-knit expression with chalky tannins. In terms of the bouquet, it offers dried fruit, tobacco and something a little sweeter that reminds me of toasted rye bread. It closes with a powerful 15% alcohol content." Wine Advocate
"his is savory, offering juniper, eucalyptus and green olive notes that complement the cherry and floral flavors. Supple and juicy, this red drives through the long, complex aftertaste. Shows excellent balance. Should be approachable soon." Wine Spectator
"A restrained and spicy wine with aromas of licorice, smoke, wood, dried flowers, strawberries and dried cherries. The attack shows a medium to full body, crisp freshness and finely tuned tannins that are dusty yet ripe and elegant. Fairly classic. Best from 2026." James Suckling
