There are moments in the life of a winemaker when past and present merge in a magical way. For Matteo Ascheri, Barolo Ascheri is such a moment – a wine that comes from the vineyard that not only bears his name, but is also the cradle of his family. It was here, in the Località Ascheri in La Morra, that the history of a winegrowing dynasty that is now one of the most respected in the whole of Piedmont began in the early 19th century. The MGA Ascheri is located on the gently sloping southern slopes of La Morra, at an altitude of 350 metres, where the fertile soils of clay, limestone marl and sand produce the exuberant fruitiness for which La Morra is famous. When Matteo vinified a separate Barolo from this two-hectare vineyard for the first time in 2010, it was more than just an oenological decision – it was a return to the roots, a tribute to the ancestors who once laid the foundations for the family heritage here.
Matteo only produces this Barolo in exceptional vintages, and 2021 offered all the prerequisites for a great Ascheri: perfect grape ripeness, balanced acidity and the kind of aromatic concentration that only top vintages can achieve. In the glass, the 2021 Ascheri reveals itself as a modern interpretation of a classic La Morra Barolo: intense garnet red in colour, with a rich bouquet of red berries and roses that leads into sweet spices and candied orange peel. On the palate, it displays the characteristic suppleness of La Morra – velvety and silky, with a beautiful layering of flavours and that fresh acidity that gives the wine vibrancy and length. With only 3,000 bottles produced, the Barolo Ascheri 2021 is not only a wine of exceptional quality, but also a rare testimony to that deep connection between the winemaker and his ancestral terroir. "This wine shows tea with dried herbs, liquorice and hints of plum. Medium to full-bodied, firm and chewy with a thin thread of fruit that carries through to a tightly wound finish. Better from 2027." James Suckling
"A blend of cherry, raspberry and menthol flavours characterise this supple, juicy red wine. Accents of iron and eucalyptus add detail as it glides into the lingering finish." Wine Spectator
"A masterful Barolo that unfolds like the chapters of a captivating story. The interplay between bright red fruits and spicy notes unfolds in waves, with each sip bringing new revelations. Fresh herbs, dried flowers and earthy undertones create a fascinating complexity. The structure suggests a long life." Wine Enthusiast
"The Barolo Ascheri 2021 comes from a vineyard with marl-clay and limestone soils in the village of La Morra. This is a savoury expression with dark fruits, tea leaf and tobacco. The finish is quite powerful, and I would describe this wine as having more breadth than vertical intensity. It offers a broad attack and finishes with a hint of sweet blackberry. Only 3,000 bottles were produced." Wine Advocate
"The Barolo Ascheri 2021 is already rich and complex in the glass. The 2021 is a Barolo with structure, showing layers of dark fruit intermingled with graphite, camphor, sage, menthol and liquorice. This tight young Barolo just needs time." Vinous
