"Our winery is situated right in the heart of the vineyard," says Luigi Moio, "and the time between harvest and crushing is practically zero; the grapes reach the vat at their peak of freshness, without any chance of them changing." A statement that sums up the philosophy of this estate, founded in 2001 together with Laura Di Marzio. Moio, a professor of oenology at the University of Federico II in Naples and, since 2015, president of the Oenology Commission of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) in Paris, is carrying on a legacy established by his father, Michele Moio – a legendary winemaker from Mondragone who, in the 1950s, revived Falerno, one of the world’s oldest wines.

The Vigna Grande Cerzito is produced from a single hectare of Aglianico in the Cerzito district, planted in 2004 on the estate's south-facing slope. The soil is volcanic, consisting of deposited ash and pumice; it is lime-free, brooding and well-drained – conditions that provide the roots with an exceptional supply of oxygen. 440 metres above sea level, 15% gradient, 5,000 vines per hectare. This wine is produced only in the finest vintages: hand-harvested into small 15-kilo crates when the grapes have reached full phenolic ripeness and are slightly overripe. Following careful selection before and after destemming, the must ferments for 20 to 25 days at 28 to 30°C. This is followed by 18 to 24 months in new French barriques, followed by further ageing in the bottle before the wine leaves the estate.

Dark ruby red. A deep, multi-layered bouquet of black cherry, plum, liquorice, graphite, oriental spices and tobacco, underpinned by delicate hints of mint, eucalyptus and incense. Intense and concentrated on the palate, with velvety tannins, superb balance and a very long finish that leaves a balsamic trail. It's velvety in feel with ripe red and black fruits, riveting acidity and violet inner florals.
