"The challenges for a vintage have never been greater than in 2022," reported the Italian winegrowers' associations Assoenologi, UIV and Ismea at the end of last year. According to the report, it rained 46 percent less in Italy in the first half of the year than the average of the last 30 years. 2022 was thus the driest year since 1800, so a clear strategy was needed to create the best conditions for the vines and allow them to complete their production cycle and withstand the hostile drought.
The first common denominator of 2022 was a normal winter with good water reserves accumulated during the autumn months. A mild spring with good prospects was followed by a dry period not recorded for at least 20 years and an August that could bring a fundamental weather turnaround for the final phase of grape ripening. The long-awaited rains and the drop in temperatures actually eased the situation and the first harvest reports from the vintners suggest an excellent vintage despite all adversities. Below are a few voices on the 2022 vintage:
"2022 will be a good vintage, that became apparent early on," says Andreas Kofler, President of the South Tyrolean Wine Consortium. "Despite heat and drought, the quality of the grapes is very good this year. This means that another strong vintage will follow after 2021. Contrary to all fears, the hot summer did not have a negative effect on the acidity of the grapes. Of course, the acidity is somewhat lower this year. But that also depends on the sites. And the last few weeks were not so hot and it was nice and cool at night, so the acidity remained good. We are very, very satisfied with the grape material here.
In the Trento region, says Anselmo Guerrieri Gonzaga, owner of the San Leonardo winery, there were no signs of drought stress on the vines. "San Leonardo is located between Monte Baldo and the Monti Lessini and is protected from direct sunlight for almost four hours a day. This is a decisive factor for the elegance and freshness of our wines. The rains in August provided an excellent water supply and a strong cooling of the climate. The large night-time temperature fluctuations help the vines to ripen the grapes optimally."
In Piedmont, people talk about a special year that was not easy to master. The key clearly lies in the agronomic choices. "Although 2022 was not an easy year," says Federica Boffa-Pio, the fifth generation of Pio Cesare, "our plants were in excellent health and we were able to harvest grapes that were enriched with all the essential substances."
In Tuscany, too, the persistently high temperatures and lack of water put growers in distress and forced them to take emergency measures. "But in August the smiles returned when it rained cats and dogs," says Francesco Ricasoli, director of the eponymous winery in Brolio, Gaiole in Chianti. "A healthy and beneficial rain that gave the vines new strength, but above all gave the fruit the right ripeness. As far as the quality of our grapes is concerned, we can justifiably say that we will have a beautiful, if not excellent vintage."
At Castellina in Chianti, in the vineyards of Castello di Fonterutoli, they have responded to the conditions of an extreme season with stability. "We are very proud of the way nature keeps surprising us," Giovanni Mazzei confirmed shortly after the harvest began. "After the prolonged drought, the rain in mid-August acted like a panacea and nature adapted. The production is a little lower, but according to the analyses so far, it promises excellent quality. We are very confident."
Further south-east in Tuscany, at Tenuta di Trinoro in Sarteano, in the beautiful Val d'Orcia, director Calogero Portannese points out, "The 2022 vintage was characterised by an almost non-existent spring and a very early summer. The persistent heat and drying winds stressed and almost paralysed the vines. Our favourable location limited the damage. In mid-August came the turning point in this extreme season. The rains came at just the right time to release the grapes from their semi-dry state and extend the harvest period.
Ettore Rizzi, in charge of viticulture and winery at Fattoria Le Pupille, describes the vintage as "extravagant" but less dramatic than expected, probably due to the proximity to the sea and the particular characteristics of the Maremma. Moreover, critical problems were overcome thanks to irrigation and agronomic practices. "The musts that are fermenting now are very promising. For the red grapes, the rains in August were decisive. They changed the climatic conditions, lengthened the harvest and favoured a better maturation of polyphenols and aromas. The grapes of the Alicante variety for the Morellino were also harvested at the end of August and the Merlot from the Saffredi vineyard took its turn at the beginning of September."
Heat and drought also posed a major challenge for Ornellaia's 2022 vintage. The agronomic choices made in terms of soil and foliage cover were a fundamental element in interpreting the vintage correctly. "After the first days of harvesting the Sauvignon Blanc, which took place at night to keep the fruit intact and with all its aromas, the long-awaited thunderstorms set in in mid-August. The abundant rainfall slowed down the ripening process a little and allowed the harvest of Sauvignon and Viognier to be completed in peace. Merlot and Vermentino followed. A head start that is the logical consequence of an unusual season," notes Axel Heinz, director of the winery. "It was not a really lush harvest, but one of high quality due to the recent ideal weather."
The 2022 wine year was also demanding in Sicily. Nevertheless, at Tasca d'Almerita they speak of a "vintage of high quality, both for the grape varieties like Grillo di Mozia or Malvasia di Salina and for the red varieties of Tenuta di Regaleali." From Etna, Vincenzo Lo Mauro, technical director of Passopisciaro, reports: "The vines, especially the centuries-old ones, have responded well. The Chardonnay harvest was brought forward to the end of August, an unusual time for grapes from Etna, which are normally harvested in September. Fantastic grapes with the right ripeness, extremely healthy and with excellent flavours. The rains at the end of August lowered the temperatures and led to the nightly temperature fluctuations typical of the region. Yields are good and we are confident that they will develop optimally as we go forward." SUPERIORE.DE
