“Serra del Conte” Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico DOC 2025
Verdicchio – the name comes from verde, green – and that's exactly what this wine is all about: a fresh, lively energy that needs no explanation. 100% Verdicchio from the historic Classico region around Serra de' Conti, vinified in stainless steel, clearly focussed on fruit and freshness. Straw yellow in colour with greenish reflections. Lemon, fresh apricot and hawthorn on the nose – light, inviting, with a hint of almond. Dry, juicy on the palate, with lively acidity and a fine salty minerality on the finish, which is typical of the hills between the Apennines and the Adriatic. The classic accompaniment to everything the sea has to offer – and the moment when you simply want to open a good white wine. SUPERIORE.DE

!["Monaco Ribelle" Verdicchio di Matelica DOC 2024]()
“Monaco Ribelle” Verdicchio di Matelica DOC 2024
Ribelle – rebel. At La Monacesca, where Verdicchio traditionally matures for a long time, this wine is a deliberate break with the rules: harvested in its youth, vinified for freshness, released before time takes the corners off it. Only stainless steel, no rush, but also no waiting for a certain patina. The result is crisp, lively, light-hearted – a Verdicchio for the moment. Green apple, citrus, a hint of almond on the finish. Not a wine for the cellar, but for the summer: aperitivo, crudo, seafood. The monks who settled here a thousand years ago probably didn't know such lightness. But they would certainly have liked it. ![Verdicchio di Matelica DOC 2024]()
Verdicchio di Matelica DOC 2024
In Palaeolithic times, the Matelica valley was a salt lake. Today, enclosed between Apennine peaks and cut off from the Adriatic, a Verdicchio grows here that carries this mineral history in every fibre. La Monacesca, founded in 1966 by Casimiro Cifola and now run by his son Aldo, has made this origin its programme. Seventeen hectares on clayey soils, four hundred metres high, facing north-south. The grapes are harvested by hand, gently pressed, fermented in stainless steel and matured for a long time on the fine lees – only then does the wine go into the bottle. No wood, no distractions, just time.

“Podium” Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore DOC 2023
The name says it all: the vineyard is located on an elongated, plateau-like ridge in the historic Classico region of the Castelli di Jesi – a ridge reminiscent of a podium. It is therefore no coincidence that Garofoli harvests its best Verdicchio cuvée right here. 100% Verdicchio from the vineyard that the estate has cultivated as its flagship for decades – and with which Carlo Garofoli was one of the first to prove that Verdicchio can and should age. The vinification remains true to the wine: steel, precision, long ageing on the lees, which gives the podium the fullness and texture that clearly distinguishes it from the fresh entry-level wine. No wood, no distractions – just Verdicchio in its most concentrated form.

“Vecchie Vigne” Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore DOC 2023 (BIO)
An expression of old vineyard depth and finesse: Vecchie Vigne comes from vines over 40 years old on clayey soils at altitudes of 250-300 metres above sea level. The result is a white wine that makes balance, structure and terroir tangible. Pale straw yellow in colour with crystalline purity. The bouquet is intense but nuanced, with aromas of almond blossom, white flowers, meadow herbs, lemon and peach, supported by lively minerality and a delicate hint of aniseed. On the palate, the wine impresses with elegant acidity, animating and firm at the same time. The mineral tension ends in a long, salty-fresh final – with structure, depth and plenty of substance. Vecchie Vigne is more than just a pleasure to drink: it is a kind of reference for the ageing potential of Verdicchio. A white wine that carries origin, history and personality in every sip. The name Plenio (derived from the Latin plenus) stands for fullness and expression, and this is precisely what characterises every facet of this Riserva. The grapes come from higher-lying plots near Cupramontana, in the historic centre of the appellation. Calcareous clay soils, cool nights and selective hand-picking create the basis for a Verdicchio with depth and Storage potential. Mirum (the miracle) is a statement of limestone, altitude and time. It is no ordinary Verdicchio, but one of the most charismatic Riserva bottlings in central Italy. Vinified since 1990, it comes from a particularly barren, limestone-rich south-western slope above Matelica, where the vines grow at over 400 metres. Misco Riserva is more than just a flagship wine – it is the concentrated result of decades of experience with Verdicchio at the highest level. The grapes come from the cru of the same name near Cingoli, a parcel with ideal south-east exposure, poor limestone soil and pronounced day-night contrasts. Only the best harvestare vinified – selected for its potential to develop fully, first in stainless steel and then for years in the bottle. Intense straw yellow in the glass with golden reflections. The nose reveals yellow apple, citrus zest, lime blossom and a fine spiciness, underpinned by salty minerality and a hint of fennel. Since 1871, the name Garofoli has embodied the soul of the Marchigian wine culture – a story of five generations that has its roots in the holy city of Loreto, where Antonio Garofoli once refreshed weary pilgrims with local wine. What began as a humble tavern developed under his son Gioacchino into one of Italy's most venerable wine houses, which is now run by brothers Carlo and Gianfranco and their children Gianluca, Caterina and Beatrice. Podium originates from the classic hills of the Castelli di Jesi, the historic heartland of Verdicchio, where medium loamy soils with sandy and calcareous inclusions form a mosaic that gives the Verdicchio grape its unmistakable minerality. The long ageing process takes place without the use of wood.

!["Senex" Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva DOCG 2019 (BIO)]()
“Senex” Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva DOCG 2019 (BIO)
It was December 1998 when a customer knocked on Giuseppe Bisci's door and asked for "vino d'annata" – young wine, drinkable immediately. But Bisci only sold his Verdicchio after at least two years of ageing. Giuseppe sent the customer away, but the encounter stayed with him. The high-altitude limestone soils of Matelica, where the Apennines rise majestically into the sky, did not produce simple everyday wines – they were capable of much more! The continental climate with sun-drenched days and icy cold mountain nights gave the Verdicchio an intensity, minerality and acid backbone that allowed it to age for decades – something almost unheard of in Italian white wine. That same day, Giuseppe turned to his cellar master Aroldo Bellelli: "Let's make a wine for the next person who asks for young wine – so that we can tell him: We make Riserva, and it will only be released after seven years!"

“Historical Vecchie Vigne” Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore DOC 2019 (BIO)
"Historical is Umani Ronchi's highly ambitious project, created thanks to its profound knowledge of the region and the terroir, on a small, remote plot in the historic vineyards of Montecarotto in the Castelli di Jesi Classico area. The Historical Vecchie Vigne is an extreme selection that is refined for five years (including 18 months on the fine lees) before being released onto the market - with the claim of being one of the greatest white cru in Italy and the world." “Historical Vecchie Vigne” Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore DOC 2020 (BIO)
There are wines that seek their time. And there are wines to which time confides its secrets. Historical Vecchie Vigne is one of those rare gems that only reveal their true colours after more than five years of ageing – a tribute by the Bernetti family to Verdicchio and at the same time a radical statement: that even non-aromatic white grape varieties can be among the very best if they are given the time they deserve. In Montecarotto, where the hills of the Verdicchio Classico find their noblest expression, there is a small plot at 310 metres above sea level, isolated in the middle of the historic Vecchie Vigne. Vines over fifty years old are rooted here in brooding, fresh, loamy soils that provide Verdicchio with the minerality and substance that only old vines can give. Eastern exposure, perfect balance between growth and yield – these vines were planted in the early seventies and today produce grapes of a concentration and ripeness that are harvested by hand at the end of September, beginning of October, berry by berry intact.

Verdicchio: Versatility with potential
South of Rimini and the small state of San Marino, not far from the port city of Ancona, one of Italy's most exciting and versatile white grape varieties can be found: Verdicchio (pronounced: werdik-jo) from the Marche. Some might be familiar with this wine because of the characteristic green amphora bottle that exploded around the world from the 1960s onwards - and, as is unfortunately so often the case, at the expense of overall quality. The once tasteless industrial wine is fortunately history.
More sustainable cultivation methods and the selection of the right sites are just some of the reasons that freed Verdicchio from its image crisis and helped it achieve a remarkable leap in quality. Because of it, the wine production of the Marche region is no longer inferior to its more famous neighbours, such as Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna, Umbria, Lazio and Abruzzo.
A grape variety with history
The remarkable green grape colour that Verdicchio takes on even when fully ripe gives the ancient variety its name. It is traded as a descendant of the Italian grape variety family Greco-Trebbiano, especially since genetic analyses proved a remarkable similarity between Verdicchio and the Venetian grape variety Trebbiano di Soave. It is very likely that the variety was introduced to the Marche region by settlers from the Veneto towards the end of the 15th century.
Verdicchio is also popular in other Italian regions, although there is no doubt that the one from the central Italian region is the best. The largest growing zone is the 2,700-hectare DOC Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi, located in the northern centre of the Marche. The high clay content and skeletal deposits in the soil here produce semi-aromatic grapes that are ideally suited to the production of still, sparkling and sweet wines.
Further west, the influence of the Apennine mountains comes to the fore in the racy wines of the small Verdicchio di Matelica DOC appellation, which covers only 300 hectares. It is located further inland in the region and is characterised by higher vineyard sites and more mineral-rich soils. It is important to understand at this point that the wines from the two aforementioned DOCs within the Marche differ significantly from each other, although they must both be made from at least 85% Verdicchio grapes. A wine from the DOC Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi tends to have delicate fruity, floral notes and a ripe character with less acidity due to its proximity to the sea. However, if the taste is to go in the direction of structured, firm, mineral-intensive wines with higher acidity, then the Verdicchio from Matelica is certainly the more exciting choice. The typical almond note is the only thing that almost all producers can agree on. In young wines, the almond note usually tastes a little more bitter, while it becomes increasingly sweeter with age. Because of its pronounced herbal aromas, salty minerality and unique fruity notes, Verdicchio should therefore not only be drunk young. It is one of the few white wines in Italy that is designated as a Riserva wine after at least 18 months of ageing with the DOCG classification of the aforementioned appellations - so it is no wonder that it is also loved by those who otherwise prefer red wines.
