Barbaresco “Vigneto Valeirano” Riserva DOCG 2009 · MAGNUM in OWC

La Spinetta's Riserve of Barbaresco single vineyard wines are only bottled in the best vintages and are sold exclusively in magnum bottles. The grapes for this exceptional wine come from vineyards at 450 metres above sea level in the Neive district. Sparkling, rich and deep ruby garnet. Valeriano Riserva surprises with a wonderful freshness and liveliness, especially on the palate. Then, in addition to the present dark fruit, there are notes of old leather, tobacco, smoke and a little liquorice. All components are coordinated with each other and end in a smooth, expressive finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Made only in magnum and released 10 years after the harvest, La Spinetta's 2009 Barbaresco Riserva Valeirano Vürsù (Magnum) ushers forth an amazing experience based on dark fruit, spice, smoke, balsam herb and grilled rosemary. The wine has moved forward along its aging trajectory but slowly and surely, revealing carefully measured evolution on the one hand and primary intensity on the other. You feel those 10 years of Nebbiolo-aging in the mouth, where silky tannins meet a mid-weight feel with good richness and concentration. A mere 600 magnums exist, and this is a bottle for cellar-keeping." Robert Parker

    • "Grandi Annate" Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG 2013
6 Bottles in OWC

“Grandi Annate” Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG 2013 · 6 Bottles in OWC

Vinified only in the best vintages and aged in 20% new and 80% used barriques, the "Grandi Annate" is certainly one of the best Nobile in the region. Sparkling, dense garnet, smells intensely of liquorice, pickled cherries and delicately of raspberries. Powerful and robust on the palate, lots of taut, present tannin. SUPERIORE.DE

"Cherry and blackberry fruit is tinged by oak spice in this powerful red. A coating of stiff tannins holds this upright, while the fruit, leather and spice notes play out on the finish." Wine Spectator

"Grandi Annate is a wine that has made a most impressive turnaround. The 2013 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Grandi Annate shows the confidence and the pride of its current incarnation. To my nose, this wine speaks the precise language of the appellation. The bouquet is broad and accessible with Sangiovese-driven tones of dried cherry and moist earth or tobacco. But like many of its peers, the bouquet here is more horizontal if you will instead of being vertical. The tightness of the wine's textual composition is what stands out most and there is a hint of cherry sweetness that adds to the volume and density you feel on the finish." Robert Parker

This is a dark and concentrated Barbaresco with background notes of barbecue spice, leather, tar, tobacco and ripe dark fruit. You'll get plenty of cola and balsam herb on the close. • "Ornellaia" Bolgheri Superiore DOC 2014
MAGNUM in OWC

“Ornellaia” Bolgheri Superiore DOC 2014 · MAGNUM in OWC

Complex, racy and delicate floral scent of fully ripe cherries and black berries with noble, optimally integrated wood aromas. The tremendously harmonious taste reveals an impeccable fruit, dense, juicy and powerful, with melt, present yet soft tannins and ends in a decidedly elegant finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"The year 2014 of Ornellaia has been, since we can remember, one of the most labour-intensive. Nevertheless, we were able to produce very attractive wines of high quality. The late ripening of the grapes has allowed the fruit to fully develop its vitality and freshness. What surprises you above all is the high quality of the tannin on the palate: soft, refined and without edges. This year represents the core of the winery's philosophy, „L‘ Essenza“ of Ornellaia: its natural style, the outstanding quality of its terroir and the skill of those who work in the vineyards and in the cellar". Axel Heinz, Director

"A rich, deep, dark ruby. Opened on the nose with intense toasted notes of dark chocolate and roasted hazelnuts, followed by dark berry fruit, blackcurrant and elderberry. On the palate beautiful spice notes, much ripe, dark berry fruit, opens with present, gripping tannin, builds up well." Falstaff

"To be released in May 2017, the 2014 Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia reverts to a style and personality that we have not seen in a long while. The wine shows a tight, silky and determined approach that reminds us of the Ornellaias made under the estate's previous ownership with the Marchese Lodovico Antinori in the mid-1990s. More than anything else, this has to do with the very unique characteristics of the 2014 growing season. The wine opens to a beautifully saturated and dark appearance. Thanks to the advanced age of the vines and their extensive root systems, fruit quality was well preserved despite the cool summer and late harvest. The wine shows sweet fruit nuances with blackberry and dark currant. Spice, leather and tobacco fill in the rear. The finish reveals just enough of that acidic prickle to assure an easy ten or fifteen year drinking window." Robert Parker

"A solid and structured red with tile, dark berry and black tea character and some cloves, too. Full body, tannic and rich. Needs time to soften. Well done for a 2014. Ornellaia shows its pedigree here." James Suckling

La Spinetta's Riserva from the Barolo single vineyard Campè is filled only in the best vintages and is sold exclusively in Magnum bottles. Bright bright red. In the nose a fascinating and constantly changing variety of, among others, liquorice, pipe tobacco, black fruits, cassis, tar, rose hip and dried herbs. On the palate with beguiling sweet, dark red fruit, in addition again fine notes of tobacco and herbal spice. Its silky, fine-grained tannins are precisely formed to carry the wine for many years to come. SUPERIORE.DE

"I tasted some beautiful Barbarescos before this sample, but the power and the vigor of the Barolo appellation comes through with undeniable clarity here. The 2007 Barolo Riserva Campè Vürsù (Magnum) is a wine of muscle, brawn and fortitude. It shows more textural tightness and density than the Barbarescos of the same vintage (also in magnum) that are softer and more streamlined in comparison. This gorgeous bottle opens to dark fruit, black currant, spice, cola and earthy truffle. Ultimately, this wine's most memorable quality is the velvety, tightly-knit nature of its mouthfeel." La Spinetta's Riserva from the Barolo single vineyard Campé is filled only in the best vintages and is sold exclusively in Magnum bottles. From the 2009 vintage, 600 bottles were filled. SUPERIORE.DE

"An homage to Barolo, the so-called "king of wines," this magnum features a lion on its front label instead of the estate's trademark rhinoceros. The La Spinetta 2009 Barolo Riserva Campè Vürsù (Magnum) is a rare and precious wine with only 600 magnums in existence. Its sheer power roars from within, thanks to a long series of dark and variety-driven aromas. Dried cherry, blackberry, tilled earth, black licorice, exotic spice and campfire ash play leading roles. This vintage also presents balsamic tones of cola, dried ginger and grilled rosemary. It wraps thickly over the palate with integrated tannins and rich textural support." Robert Parker

"The 2009 Barolo Riserva Campè emerges from the upper blocks at La Spinetta's estate vineyard in Grinzane Cavour and is bottled only in magnum. A rich, ample wine, the 2009 has aged beautifully. Sweet red cherry, cinnamon, white chocolate and flowers are some of the notes that build in the glass. The 2009 has volume, persistence and a good deal of freshness to match. Tasted today, eleven years after the vintage, the 2009 clearly harkens back to a time when the wines were more marked by French oak than they are today. Readers who can look past that will find a sweeping, grand, modern-style Barolo that hits all the right notes. Even though the oak imprint is a bit strong in some vintages of this era, Giorgio Rivetti's wines have proven to age very well. Tasted a day after the opening, the 2009 has lost none of its allure." Viettis Barolo Brunate is fragrant and clear, intense with roses and raspberries, seductive sweet fruit notes. Also on the palate very clear and straightforward with dense tannin, nice depth and long. SUPERIORE.DE

"From one of the region’s most celebrated vineyards, the 2009 BaroloBrunate lavishes on smoky, granite and mineral notes that make this wine absolutely irresistible. Even the drawing of a snail on the label seems to hammer home one obvious point: This wine is built for longer cellaraging. Sweet red fruit, licorice, leather andmoist pipe tobacco are some of the many layers that peel back from thebouquet. The balance, structure and persistence of the wine are allsuperb." Robert Parker

"The 2009 Barolo Rocche is wonderfully open and expressive. Barolos from the best sites in Castiglione Falletto often have an uncanny ability toshow very well young, yet also age gradually with a level of finesse that is hard to see when the wines are young. Dark red cherries, mocha, flowers and spices are woven together beautifully in this soft (for Barolo), sensual wine. Silky tannins frame the rich, seamless finish. • Brunello di Montalcino "Greppo" Riserva DOCG 1997
0,75l in OWC

Brunello di Montalcino “Greppo” Riserva DOCG 1997 · 0,75l in OWC

Greppo Riserva from the absolute top year 1997 - newly corked, as Biondi Santi does every 20 years also on behalf of customers - smells of flowers, licorice, red berries and spices. Elegance and perfection at the palate, long, supple, juicy up to the endless final. SUPERIORE.DE

"Optimal vintage, rain in spring, June and July dry and warm, refreshing downpours again and again in August; harvestin early September. Rich, sparkling ruby garnet. Shows nice ripe cherry fruit on the nose, some plum, plus blackberry, the warmth of the vintage is also evident in the riper flavors. Firm and sturdy on the palate, gripping, dense tannin, lots of ripe fruit, surprisingly broad for Biondi Santi." Falstaff

"The celebrated 1997 vintage was, generally speaking, overestimated in Tuscany and most of the wines are today more evolved than expected. It was considered one of the best vintages of the 20th century for two key reasons: it was the warmest harvest of the cool 1990s, and there were some excellent wines from the coolest spots for Sangiovese. Biondi Santi's steep hill of Il Greppo and its BBS11 clone loves warm vintages and certainly they have pushed the reputation of the year. The quality of this Riserva is immediately clear: the outstanding freshness of the attack is still there, and the palate shines for the savoury red berries melded with hints of wild fowl, liquorice stick and Earl grey, increasing its citrus elegance. It displays the perfect balance of structural elements, still tense with velvety tannins. The sweet cherry kernel flavours sit on a broader than usual palate, with not quite firm acidity." Decanter

"A ripe expression, showing broad shoulders, this is still monolithic and dense at 15 years. Cherry, plum and stony aromas and flavors are supported by fresh acidity and dusty tannins. The tight finish contains a mineral element. Opens up with time in the glass, but could use another 5 to 10 years of aging." Wine Spectator

"The Biondi-Santi 1997 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva was never previously reviewed; therefore, I am very excited to add an official record of this stunning wine to our database. This vintage delivers structure and age-worthy intensity that should carry it forward successfully for more years ahead. However, if you decide to pop the cork now, rest assured that this excellent Brunello has now entered its prime drinking window. The bouquet is polished and fine, with wild fruit aromas that segue to balsam herb and licorice. The finish is long and extremely polished. This is a real beauty." Robert Parker

    • Brunello di Montalcino "Greppo" Riserva DOCG 1998

Brunello di Montalcino “Greppo” Riserva DOCG 1998

Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 1998 comes from a vintage that initially attracted little attention but is now in full bloom and is an outstanding example of the ageing ability of Biondi Santi's wines.

Dark garnet red with brown rim. In the full bouquet a potpourri of dried red berries, spices, damp forest floor, rose petals and violets. Behind these feminine aromas are power and determination, and at the same time they provide an extremely harmonious overall impression on the palate with the still very compact fruit, the lively acidity and its present but very polished tannins. The incipient maturity is very much to its advantage, providing a soft and warm texture that cushions it wonderfully and makes it a special experience. Hardly any Italian red wine will continue to give as much pleasure in many years as this 1998 Riserva! SUPERIORE.DE

"Lustrous mid ruby with narrow orange rim. Amazing focus and lift on the nose. Sour cherry with hints of iron and liquorice. Still so youthful and concentrated and at the same time so elegant. Succulent and long and with a layer of polished tannins carrying the fruit. Cool, sleek and long, this is a monument of elegance and style." Jancis Robinson

"Features beautiful perfume, evoking rose, cherry, licorice and tobacco. Elegant, delicate even, with fine harmony and refinement. Cherry and raspberry flavors are persistent. Lacks the power of a 2001 or 1997, but shows finesse and filigree." Wine Spectator

"The 1998 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva comes from an under-the-radar vintage that has blossomed today. The aging potential of these Riservas from Il Greppo must be tasted to be believed. Driven by fresh acidity that remains firm and taut, this wine reveals a dark garnet color and mid-weight concentration. The bouquet presents a careful succession of dried berry, forest floor and spice aromas that builds in intensity as the wine warms in the glass. The wine hits the palate with immediate brilliance and sparkle. This bottle is at its drinking prime right now. It's a true beauty." Robert Parker

"Boasting alluring scents of new leather, truffle, camphor, pipe tobacco and just a whiff of tar, this just re-released Riserva from the estate's cellar is absolutely gorgeous. Loaded with finesse, the polished, vibrant palate delivers dried cherry, orange zest, cinnamon and nutmeg alongside silky, smooth tannins before finishing on a note of black tea. Still amazingly fresh and going strong." Wine Enthusiast

Brunello di Montalcino “Greppo” Riserva DOCG 1998 · 0,75l in OWC

    • Barbaresco Crichët Pajé DOCG 2008

      Barbaresco Crichët Pajé DOCG 2008

Bright garnet red. Despite advanced maturity, the nose appears youthful, compact and closed. Dark earth, stony notes, a cool scent reminiscent of iron and graphite, some bacon, tar and wood smoke. Its fruit moves completely on the dark side, small blueberries, blackthorn, dried cranberries and dark plum puree. Extreme depth already in the nose. On the palate, a lot of freshness with the right dose of acidity and a still youthful tannin structure. A great, exciting drop, a monument of power that conceals incredible elegance and facets. Those who can wait have a clear advantage. SUPERIORE.DE

"Sparkling, intense ruby garnet. Exciting and multi-layered nose, of raspberries, strawberries and rosewood, in the background some cinchona bark and dried orange peel. The palate also shows considerable density, rich tannin with fine meshes at the core, built up in many layers, ripe plums, discreet leather notes in the aftertaste". Falstaff

"The 2008 Barbaresco Crichët Pajé is a gorgeous, translucent wine that shows this cool, late-ripening vintage at its best. Sweet red cherry, mint, kirsch, hard candy and white pepper are all beautifully delineated. In many vintages, Crichët Pajé was massively tannic and forbidding. The 2008 is the most refined vintage of this wine I have ever tasted." Antonio Galloni

Barbaresco Crichët Pajé DOCG 2010 · 0,75l in OWC

"Transparent ruby red with crimson tapered edges. The ethereal perfume of a complete Arabian bazaar with colorful cloths, incense sticks and brightly colored, piled up exotic spices comes directly to mind when you put your nose into the 2010 Barbaresco Crichët Pajé. Incense and myrrh, sandalwood and precious cedar wood exude an odeur like in 1001 nights. Spicy notes of cloves, allspice, mace and pepper are mixed with cherries, laurel and raspberry jelly, currant leaves and floral top notes of orange blossom complete the pleasure. In the drink Crichët Pajé presents itself with great calm in a steady flow. Nothing here is impertinent or exuberant, but radiates with distinguished elegance - an equilibrium in perfect balance. The aromatic exuberance of the nose is disciplined on the palate by the long, calm flow of focused, cool acidity, on the banks of which fully ripe and fine-grained tannins grow. Silky with almost aristocratic noblesse, its enormous complexity reveals itself in the second sip, when the aromas begin to unfold in the epic echo like a massive Win-Zip file. A wine for today, for tomorrow and for many, many more years to come. Unchallenged world class." Sebastian Bordthäuser (Sommelier und Wein-Journalist)

"A ripe, savory style, with a fruit profile that leans toward cherry and plum compote flavors, accented by coffee, soy, tar and mineral notes, all supported by a dense layer of chunky tannins. Despite the mature fruit profile, this is surprisingly fresh on the finish, with excellent length. Still a youngster, this should age for decades." Wine Spectator

"The 2010 Barbaresco Crichët Pajè is one of the most captivating and arrestingly beautiful wines I have ever tasted from Roagna. Intense, penetrating Nebbiolo aromatics make a strong opening statement before the 2010 literally takes over all the sense. Medium in body and yet also remarkably deep. Rose petal, kirsch, dried herbs, hard candy, mint and sweet spice develop in the glass, but it is the wine's sense of harmony that really stands out. The 2010 spent five years in cask (one less than normal), a choice that paid off handsomely." VINOUS

Barbaresco “Selezione Tre Vigneti” Riserva DOCG 2007 · 3 MAGNUM-Bottles in OWC

La Spinettas Riserve of the Barbaresco vineyards Gallina, Starderi and Valeirano are filled only in the best vintages and are sold exclusively in magnum bottles. Here you get all three single layers from the top vintage 2007 in strictly limited 3er wooden box. SUPERIORE.DE

"A highlight of my Piedmont tasting tour this spring was my visit with Giorgio Rivetti of La Spinetta. We met at the modern Campè winery that is located at the bottom of the next hill over from the historic Castello di Grinzane Cavour, an important landmark for the entire Barolo appellation. Upon my arrival, I was greeted to a long table fitted with an equally long line of wine bottles. I counted 35 of them. It’s a good thing I had built in extra time before my next tasting appointment that day. The La Spinetta wines are truly outstanding. I would especially like to draw your attention to the late-release wines (produced in magnum only) from the 2007 vintage." Robert Parker

Barbaresco "Vigneto Gallina" Riserva DOCG 2007

"Only in the best vintages, La Spinetta releases magnum-only editions of its top wines. These wines are generally released ten years after the harvest following additional bottle aging (and one extra year of oak) under the most stringent conditions back at the winery. This year, one of these absolute gems is the 2007 Barbaresco Riserva Gallina (Magnum). I am a huge fan of the sheer elegance produced in this vineyard. This quality has been harnessed to perfection in the case of this wine. It is beautifully evolved, long and silky. Yet, the primary fruit sings loudest of all. This is a delightful achievement." Barbaresco "Vigneto Starderi" Riserva DOCG 2007

"The 2007 Barbaresco Riserva Starderi (Magnum) immediately flaunts the density and important structure that is associated with this celebrated vineyard site. This is an overtly generous and bountiful expression of Nebbiolo that offers thick layers of aromatic intensity. The wine's best asset is the intact and vibrant quality of the primary fruit—so presented now, eleven years after the harvest. This is an expensive bottle for sure, but it does award a delicious and unforgettable experience." Robert Parker

Barbaresco "Vigneto Valeirano" Riserva DOCG 2007

"This wine represents a crowning achievement among an elite group of magnum-only delayed releases. The 2007 Barbaresco Riserva Valeirano (Magnum) is nothing short of magnificent. It is intense and articulate in ways you don't expect. Specifically, I am referring to the vibrant and dazzling quality of fruit that is traveling full speed ahead. Nothing about this wine has slowed down. In fact, I would expect this beautiful interpretation to pick up further speed and complexity as it continues its evolution. This wine is old but also new, sweet but also savory and powerful but also elegant. It is a wine of profound contrasts that find impeccable unity despite those inherent contradictions. Congratulations to La Spinetta." Robert Parker
