![Barbaresco "La Casa in Collina" DOCG 2021]()
Barbaresco “La Casa in Collina” DOCG 2021
Gentle in flavour, powerful in body. La Casa in Collina is Vite Colte's charming statement on Barbaresco. Created from traditional grape variety assemblages from old terroirs in a light southern exposure, this wine combines nuance with poise: around 20 days of slow fermentation and a year in large oak barrels create a balance that allows depth without sacrificing elegance. In the glass, the colour is a rich ruby red that thickens to a fine garnet at the edges. The nose opens with a refined profile: ripe plum, red berry and violet, accompanied by coffee powder, tobacco leaf and a hint of fine woody spices, subtly intense but never overwhelming. Lively and carefully structured on the palate, with well-embedded tannins, fresh acidity and dense fruit. The big wood is noticeable, but nuanced. The finish is long, savoury and pleasantly round, with a hint of subtle vanilla and juicy cherry. This Barbaresco is confident and expressive, yet approachable enough to enjoy today. Optimal value for money – good potential available. SUPERIORE.DE

![Barbaresco Serraboella DOCG 2021]()
Barbaresco Serraboella DOCG 2021
Barbaresco Serraboella takes you on a fascinating journey to the cool, chalky slopes of Neive, where 30-year-old Nebbiolo vines are rooted in slatey clay and sandy soils. Here, Fontanabianca cultivates grapes with clear depth – vinified with respect for fruit, artisanal precision and the potential of the site. The 2021 vintage opens with gentle elegance. Supported by balanced summer conditions and cool nights, it produced grapes with balance and expression. The result is a multi-layered, elegantly composed framework built on its 12–15 months of ageing in wood without masking its finesse.

![Barbaresco "Nubiola" DOCG 2021]()
Barbaresco “Nubiola” DOCG 2021
Nubiola is a Barbaresco with inner tension: differentiated, unagitated, but with a clear character. The name refers to historical roots: Vitis Nubiola was the name given to Nebbiolo in the 13th century. Pelissero has revived this term – not out of sentimentality, but because it suits the style of the wine: Complexity instead of posturing, depth instead of effect. The grapes come from various plots around Treiso, on soils of calcareous marl with a fine clay content. The sites complement each other – altitude, exposure, microclimate – to create a complex but harmonious overall picture. The wine is fermented with natural yeast and matured for 18 months in large barrels and tonneaux, all with deliberate restraint so that the structure and origin remain visible.

![Barbaresco Bordini DOCG 2021]()
Barbaresco Bordini DOCG 2021
The Bordini parcel lies between gentle hills in the municipality of Neive, with a southern exposure and calcareous soil – one of the structure-forming Barbaresco vineyards that has always been famous for its power, elegance and depth. The 2021 vintage is considered particularly refined: A long, balanced growing season nourished the grapes with balanced ripeness, while cooler nights preserved the fine acidity. The manual harvest in mid-October was perfectly timed and ensured the high quality of the harvest. Ageing in large oak barrels for 12-14 months brought complementary depth without masking the clear fruit expression.

![Barbaresco Reyna DOCG 2021]()
Barbaresco Reyna DOCG 2021
The vineyards of the Reyna site in the hills of Neive and Barbaresco benefit from an ideal south-east to south-west exposure and reddish limestone marl, which is loosened up by sandy inclusions. The grapes are deliberately harvested late in order to achieve optimum physiological ripeness. After fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the wine matures for around 18 months in large Allier and Slavonian oak barrels, followed by a resting period in the bottle. The 2021 vintage was characterised by a warm, stable summer and cool nights during the ageing phase, which ensured impressive aromatic precision and a taut structure.

![Barbaresco "Tulin" DOCG 2021]()
Barbaresco “Tulin” DOCG 2021
Tulin is a wine that looks in two directions – on the one hand deeply rooted in the single vineyard of the same name directly below the winery in Treiso, and on the other hand an expression of a modern, consciously contoured interpretation of Barbaresco. The wine comes from a south and south-west facing steep slope on calcareous marl soil, interspersed with layers of blue clay – a terroir that produces structure, precision and clarity. In the great Pelissero canon, Tulin stands for finesse with a backbone. The vines are over 50 years old and produce concentrated, but never exuberant harvest. The wine is matured for around 20 months in tonneaux and large barrels – not for effect, but for balance. Vinification is carried out with open mash fermentation and a great deal of patience in the cellar; the use of wood is deliberately minimised.

![Barbaresco Ovello Riserva DOCG 2021]()
Barbaresco Ovello Riserva DOCG 2021
Domizio Cavazza had vineyards in Ovello. When he founded the first Cantine Sociale in Barbaresco in 1894, Ovello was already part of his plan – one of the oldest and most original vineyards in this appellation. Today, with over twenty hectares, Ovello is by far the largest of the nine Produttori del Barbaresco sites and is located at the northernmost point of the municipal area, where the hill has various exposures – west-south-west and east-south-east – on a soil that is both calcareous and rich in clay. The clay is more present here than elsewhere in Barbaresco, and it gives the wine its typical opulence: plump fruit, full body, firm tannins. The Produttori del Barbaresco also vinify Ovello according to the same principle that has been maintained for decades: 28 days of maceration, at least thirty months in large Slavonian barrels, a further year in the bottle. The Riserve are bottled exclusively in exceptional vintages – and 2021 leaves no doubt about that.

Barbaresco Rio Sordo Riserva DOCG 2021
Rio Sordo lies alone. The southernmost location of the Produttori del Barbaresco, a narrow strip running from north to south and bordering the municipality of Treiso to the west. The soils are light-coloured, low in lime, slightly – very different from the clay-rich slopes in the north or the calcareous sites in the centre. And it is precisely this less that leads to more: Silkiness. Tannins that never overwhelm, but accompany. A surface that seduces before revealing its depth. The process is the same as for all Produttori del Barbaresco sites: 28 days of maceration, thirty months in Slavonian oak barrels, one year in the bottle. First vinified as a single vineyard in 1978 – at a time when the world was just beginning to take Barbaresco seriously.

![Barbaresco Pora Riserva DOCG 2021]()
Barbaresco Pora Riserva DOCG 2021
To the north, Pora is bordered by a vertical rocky ridge that drops steeply down to the Tanaro river – covered by a dense oak forest, famous for its white truffle. This is no coincidence. The river is close by, its influence measurable: the summer mornings are more temperate than elsewhere, the humidity higher, the soil more fertile than in most other locations of the Produttori del Barbaresco. What the vine makes of it is a Nebbiolo with special accessibility – a gentle hand that does not deny the traditional craft. Because the craft is uncompromising: 28 days of maceration, at least thirty months in large Slavonian oak barrels, one year in the bottle. Domizio Cavazza added Pora to his vineyard list in 1894 as one of the first vineyards; the Produttori have been bottling it separately since 1967.

![Barbaresco Muncagota Riserva DOCG 2021]()
Barbaresco Muncagota Riserva DOCG 2021
The name was finalised by the official MGA classification in 2007: Muncagota – the Piedmontese dialect term for what was called Moccagatta for decades. Wine, winegrower and soil remained the same. The site lies to the south-east of the village centre, opening up to the morning light, which reaches the grapes earlier than on the west-facing slopes. The soil is rich in limestone, the yield is compact – and the character it gives the Nebbiolo is unusual for a Barbaresco vineyard: floral, almost minty-herbaceous, with a freshness that holds its own even in warm vintages. The Produttori del Barbaresco have been vinifying Muncagota since 1967, identically to all other sites of the cooperative: 28 days of maceration, thirty months or more in large Slavonian oak barrels, a further year in the bottle. The same method for all, the differences come only from the terroir.

![Barbaresco Montestefano Riserva DOCG 2021]()
Barbaresco Montestefano Riserva DOCG 2021
You have to earn the nickname. They call Montestefano the "Barolo of Barbaresco" – and anyone who has had a good vintage in their hands will understand why. The site is just a few metres away from Montefico, shares its southern exposure and the calcareous subsoil, but clearly towers above it in terms of steepness. Excellent drainage, late harvest, a warmer microclimate thanks to the protection from northerly winds: these are the conditions under which the Nebbiolo develops maximum ripeness here – almost smoky darkness, full power. The Produttori del Barbaresco have been vinifying Montestefano as a single vineyard since 1974; the craft has remained unchanged for decades: 28 days of maceration at 30 degrees, then at least thirty months in large Slavonian wooden barrels.

![Barbaresco Pajè Riserva DOCG 2021]()
Barbaresco Pajè Riserva DOCG 2021
The area is just under two hectares. Pajè is the smallest of all nine Produttori del Barbaresco vineyards – and yet, or perhaps precisely because of this, it bears one of the most striking signatures of the entire range: a freshness that never fades. The site lies to the south-west of the village, slightly lower than its higher-lying neighbours and more open towards the Tanaro. The influence of the river gives it a cooler microclimate; the soil is calcareous with veins of sand that drain well. In cooler vintages, a slight mint flavour can be detected that is rarely found elsewhere in Barbaresco. First produced in 1967 – then as a special label for the "Cavalieri del Tartufo" –since 1982 in the regular vintage. The vinification follows the basic principle of the co-operative: 28 days of maceration, thirty months or more in large wooden barrels, one year in the bottle.

![Barbaresco Rabajà Riserva DOCG 2021]()
Barbaresco Rabajà Riserva DOCG 2021
No other point in the Barbaresco geography is as geologically charged as Rabajà. Where the two ridges of the village meet – one sloping westwards towards the Tanaro, with loose, calcareous soil; the other facing north, with compact, calcareous subsoil –lies the vineyard. The secret of its complexity lies in the intersection of the soils: Rabajà combines what is otherwise separate. The south-westerly exposure provides warmth; the limestone gives tension. The result is a wine that does not play off elegance and power, but rather blends them together. The Produttori del Barbaresco first bottled Rabajà in 1970 – the entire production was purchased by Ristorante Guido in Costigliole d'Asti, a silent sign that this wine would become more than just an insider tip right from the start. Vinification: 28 days on the skins, thirty months or more in wooden barrels, one year in the bottle.

Barbaresco Asili Riserva DOCG 2021
There are locations that you know without ever having visited them. Asili is one of them – a gentle hollow to the south-west of the village of Barbaresco, protected from the Tanaro by the ridge, warmer during the day than the neighbouring vineyards, quieter, more concentrated. Marl and limestone alternate in layers, the vines are deeply rooted and the result is less impression than personality. The Produttori del Barbaresco have been vinifying Asili separately since 1967 – as one of the first five sites to be bottled individually by the co-operative. The process is the same as for all nine crus: maceration for 28 days at 30 degrees, followed by at least thirty months of ageing in large Slavonian oak barrels with a capacity of 25 to 50 hectolitres, and finally a further year in the bottle. No secret – but a craft that requires exceptional patience. 2021 gives the Asili a special depth. The frost in April decimated the harvest, the remaining grapes grew in concentration during a long, temperate season; the harvest only began after 8 October – almost like in the old days.

Barbaresco Montefico Riserva DOCG 2021
Between Montestefano and Ovello lies Montefico – has always been recognised by connoisseurs as the most precise, intellectual wine in the Produttori range. The site opens up to the south and south-east, sharing the limestone-rich subsoil with its mighty neighbour Montestefano, but is at the same time exposed to occasional northerly winds that blow through the narrow valley between Barbaresco and Neive, refreshing the mornings even in hot summers. This gives the Nebbiolo here a characteristic coolness that it wears with dignity. The Produttori del Barbaresco vinify Montefico according to the same logic as all of their other nine crus: 28 days of maceration, then thirty months or more in large Slavonian oak barrels – without haste, without compromise. The April frost of 2021 reduced the harvest to the essentials; the grapes ripened slowly and completely, and the harvest only took place after 8 October – under almost perfect conditions.

Barbaresco DOCG 2021
As always, the grapes come from our own vineyards in Treiso and San Rocco Seno d'Elvio. Each parcel is harvested separately by hand, fermented in stainless steel and left on the skins for around four weeks; gentle remontages ensure a fine extraction. Malolactic fermentation takes place without haste. For ageing, the Boffa family primarily chooses large Slavonian barrels, supplemented by a smaller proportion of French oak – used as a textural tool, not as a flavour enhancer. 2021 was a top year in Piedmont. It was characterised by a long, cool ripening process with clear day-night amplitudes, the harvest was late and selective with excellent results.

Barbaresco “Vanotu” DOCG 2021
Vanotu is the great single-vineyard Barbaresco of the house – a wine with origin at its core and concentration in its expression. The grapes come from the historic Basarin vineyard in Neive, a cru parcel with south-west exposure and steep limestone marl soils, which not only give the Nebbiolo depth, but also structure and vertical tension. The name "Vanotu" is a dedication to Giovanni (Vanotu) Pelissero, grandfather of the current winemaker – a family foundation to which this wine owes its independence. The wine is matured with sensitivity: around 20 months in barriques, some of which are new, precisely matched to the character of the vintage. No dominant wood notes, but a framework that gives the grape variety space and direction.

Barbaresco “Cottà" DOCG 2021
In 1969, Rino Sottimano acquired a vineyard that was to become the foundation of his winery: The Cru Cottà, 2.8 hectares located between the municipalities of Neive and Barbaresco, where south-westerly exposures and sandy soils give the Nebbiolo the fullness and structure that make this Barbaresco so special. The vines, now 80 years old, are spaced unusually far apart, a relic from times when vegetables and artichokes were still cultivated between the rows of vines. A historical planting method that gives the roots room to penetrate deep into the calcareous clay soil. Cottà has always been the most fruit-orientated of the five Sottimano crus, a wine of concentrated power that combines the fleshy polyphenols of the Neive vineyards with the distinctive tannin structure of Barbaresco.

![Barbaresco "Fausoni" DOCG 2021]()
Barbaresco “Fausoni” DOCG 2021
Bright garnet colour with a ruby red core. A polyphonic, clear Nebbiolo image on the nose: sour cherry, red forest berries and pomegranate, plus dried roses, white pepper, liquorice and a cool, stony-mineral undertone. Silky and taut at the same time on the palate, the fruit is clear as a bell, carried by lively, straight acidity and fine-grained, chalky tannins; the wood only appears as a textural finishing touch. Very long, salty-mineral finish with a delicate herbal freshness. A Fausoni-Barbaresco from the MGA of the same name with calm authority and precise elegance – transparent, full of energy and with outstanding potential for the coming years. SUPERIORE.DE

![Barbaresco "Basarin" DOCG 2021]()
Barbaresco “Basarin” DOCG 2021
Do you know the Basarin vineyard near Neive? You can expect a bright ruby-garnet colour and a wine from a particularly fine vintage: the bouquet is a cornucopia of wild sour cherry aromas, herbs, a little liquorice and tobacco. Firm and very clearly structured on the palate, muscular and yet with an elegance that never loses control due to its power. Basarin is a highly energetic and precise Nebbiolo that only reveals its complexity with a little patience and aeration. The neighbouring Neive terroir reveals itself with distinguished elegance and blends harmoniously with the volume and weight typical of the site - and with a depth that only vines over 50 years old can produce. ![Barbaresco "Pajoré" DOCG 2021]()
Barbaresco “Pajoré" DOCG 2021
The Sottimano winery has five vineyard sites, with the Pajoré site near Treiso having the poorest soil of all. These wines are therefore more elegant and mature. Pajoré is a super-classic, explosive wine, endowed with enormous depth and character. Although it has plenty of breadth and texture, it remains light on its feet. Lavender, mint, liquorice and purple berry fruit are beguiling and wonderfully vibrant in the glass. Pajorè is a spicy, elegant and sweet Nebbiolo that is fine yet covers the mouth well - and we are always impressed by its lovely savoury mouthfeel. SUPERIORE.DE

![Barbaresco "Vigneto Gallina" DOCG 2021 (BIO)]()
Barbaresco “Vigneto Gallina” DOCG 2021 (BIO)
The single vineyard Gallina in Neive has been synonymous with powerful, broodingBarbaresco for decades. The vines grow on calcareous marl soils with a southern exposure – a terroir that characterises the Nebbiolo with lush fruit, fine spice and distinctive structure. Organic cultivation promotes vitality and expressiveness, while limiting yields ensures concentration. The 2021 vintage was characterised by an ideal balance: warm, sunny days and cool nights during the ripening phase resulted in healthy, aromatically complex grapes. After careful manual harvesting, a traditional maceration followed, after which the wine matured for around 20 months in new barriques before being bottled unfiltered.

![Barbaresco "Vigneto Starderi" DOCG 2021 (BIO)]()
Barbaresco “Vigneto Starderi” DOCG 2021 (BIO)
The Starderi hill in the municipality of Neive is one of the most famous addresses in Barbaresco. The vines here are rooted in calcareous marl soils interspersed with fine loam – a terroir that lends structure and warmth to the Nebbiolo. The location is sun-drenched, but the altitude of around 270 metres and the open breeze from the Tanaro River ensure freshness and aromatic precision. 2021 is considered a vintage of rare balance in Piedmont: an even growing season with a mild spring, a warm but not extremely hot summer and a long, dry autumn. Traditional mash fermentation, 20 months maturation in new barriques, unfiltered bottling.

Barbaresco 2021: finesse, excitement and a modern classic from the heart of the Langhe
Barbaresco 2021 shows the precise, broodingand at the same time remarkably elegant side of Nebbiolo. The vintage has contour, inner tension and length, but does not appear austere or closed. Rather, it combines classic architecture with finesse, maturity and a clear expression of origin.
Barbaresco 2021 is already regarded as a vintage of exceptional calibre. The wines combine ripeness, freshness and expression of origin in a way that is reminiscent of great Piedmontese reference years. On this page you will find the most important critics' comments, the stylistic classification of the vintage as well as information on the climate, harvest, drinking window and potential.
Barbaresco 2021 at a glance
Barbaresco 2021 is a vintage with substance and perspective. The best wines show it:
- Ripe, clearly defined tannins
- Precise, open and deeply layered flavours
- Balance between concentration and freshness
- classic structure without exaggerated rigour
- very good potential for longer ageing in the bottle
Anyone looking for Barbaresco with depth, tension and a profile of origin will find a vintage with great seriousness and lasting impact in 2021.
The character of the 2021 vintage
Barbaresco 2021 is not a vintage of quick pleasing. It does not rely on mere charm, but on form, precision and inner calm. The wines show structure without being closed off and finesse without losing substance. It is precisely this combination that makes the vintage so strong.
Several producers and critics draw comparisons with great classic vintages. The blend of aromatic clarity, dense texture and the freshness that makes Nebbiolo so distinctive in its best moments is particularly striking. 2021 is therefore mature, but never heavy. Concentrated, but never broad. Classically constructed, but by no means unapproachable.
JAMES SUCKLING | Finesse on a new level
James Suckling has entitled his report on Barbaresco 2021 "Taking Finesse to a New Level". This alone makes it clear where the journey is heading. For him, the vintage shows depth, structure and a classic profile, but without tipping over into austerity.
The specific conditions in the Barbaresco region were decisive: rainfall, small and concentrated berries and the ability of the best sites to achieve a convincing balance between freshness and ripeness.
Suckling's point that 2021 is built for long maturation but is "not too austere" is particularly important. This is precisely where his class lies. The wines have structure and future, without appearing hard or unapproachable.
What Suckling particularly emphasises about 2021
- Classic profile with depth and structure
- Balance instead of heaviness
- Expression of origin in the best vineyards
- Finesse without loss of substance
- Potential for long development
ANTONIO GALLONI | Finessed, elegant and profound
Antonio Galloni describes the wines as "finessed, elegant wines that will delight Piedmont fans", with "open aromatics, pliant fruit and finessed, ripe tannins". His formulation that the best wines are "profoundly expressive" is particularly strong.
This is a crucial point for Barbaresco 2021. The vintage is not only characterised by structure, but also by expression. The wines are not just correctly constructed, but speak clearly and precisely about their origin, grape variety and vintage. This is precisely where their fascination lies.
Galloni's view ideally complements Suckling's assessment. Where Suckling emphasises the classic architecture and the level of finesse, Galloni underlines the finesse of the texture and the expressive openness. Together, this results in a very coherent picture: Barbaresco 2021 is a vintage with form and soul.
Climate, vegetation and harvest
The winter before 2021 was mild and wet and replenished the water reserves in the soil. This was a significant advantage for the later dry summer. Spring frosts at the beginning of April mainly affected lower altitudes, but the damage was limited in many plots. After that, the season was initially cooler and wetter, before a predominantly warm and dry summer followed.
Several factors were decisive for the quality of the vintage:
- Good water reserves from the winter
- no permanent extreme heat
- cool nights before the harvest
- slow, even ripening
- a harvestuntil the third week of October
It was precisely this combination that helped to bring together phenolic ripeness, freshness and flavour. The result is wines with clear lines, dense fruit and a remarkably precise tannin structure.
Locations, origin and profile
Barbaresco 2021 is also so exciting because certain sites and zones show their signature particularly clearly. James Suckling cites Asili as a prime example of exceptional balance, while he believes that Ovello will need more time. Roncaglie and Socre benefited from their soils and produced very ripe grapes.
Especially in a year like 2021, it becomes clear how clearly origin can speak within Barbaresco. The vintage acts like a burning glass for terroir. This makes it particularly appealing for connoisseurs and all the more interesting for collectors.
Particularly exciting references to origin in 2021
- Asili for balance and noblesse
- Ovello for structure and staying power
- Roncaglie for maturity and density
- Socre for expression and substance
So the 2021 Barbaresco is not just a strong vintage in general. It is also a year in which the terroir comes through with particular clarity.
Drinking window and perspective
Barbaresco 2021 is not a vintage for impatience. Although many of the wines do not appear closed or harsh, their true potential clearly lies in their development over the years. The balance of fruit, acidity and tannin gives the best bottles a very convincing future.
The strongest specimens:
- show their quality when young
- gain significantly with air and maturity
- possess classic structure with long-distance potential
- combine early precision with late depth
Anyone who buys Barbaresco 2021 is therefore not just buying a celebrated vintage, but a Nebbiolo with real development prospects.
Conclusion: A vintage with a lasting effect
Barbaresco 2021 is a vintage of rare unity. It combines ripeness and freshness, structure and finesse, depth and expression of origin in a way that is not experienced every year. For lovers of Nebbiolo, 2021 is therefore much more than just another strong vintage.
It is a reminder of how great Barbaresco can be when climate, ripeness and origin find an almost ideal balance.
