There are wines that become legends before they are even drunk – and then there is Madonna del Piano 2019. In the small votive chapel that gave this mythical vineyard its name, the faithful of centuries past could hardly have guessed that one of the most monumental Brunelli in wine history would one day be born here. But that is exactly what happened in 2019, when the stars aligned perfectly over Montalcino. The 2019 vintage is already being described by connoisseurs as a dream vintage – a year in which nature did everything right. A cold, rainy winter replenished the water reserves, a balanced spring ensured even budding and a moderately warm summer without extreme heat or heavy rain created ideal conditions. In September, mild temperatures and large temperature fluctuations between day and night brought the perfect ripening that only exceptional vintages achieve.

On the legendary single vineyard Madonna del Piano, which has been one of the most sought-after cru sites in Montalcino for decades, Vincenzo Abbruzzese used this favour of nature with the mastery of four decades of experience. Unlike the accessible 2020, the 2019 required a completely different approach: Longer maceration, more intensive extraction and an additional ten months of ageing in wood – a total of over three years of ageing, which gave this exceptional Sangiovese the time to reach its full potential.

All of this results in a wine of almost cathedral-like dimensions: dark, concentrated fruit of black cherry and plums is combined with leather, sweet tobacco and those earthy, balsamic notes that only the best Montosoli sites produce. The 2019 surpasses everything that has gone before: it has the depth for decades of development, but will still need years to reveal its full splendour. This is Vincenzo's masterpiece – a Brunello Riserva that not only reflects the extraordinary terroir of Madonna del Piano, but also the most perfect vintage of an entire generation.
