Directly in front of the winery, at an altitude of 600 metres, with a view to the south-west and the sea on the horizon, lies a vineyard that was planted in 1968. It is called Vigna Vecchia – the old vineyard. That's all it needs to introduce itself. 56-year-old vines on quartz-rich soil, the last plot on the estate to be harvested – some years not until mid-October. The old vine is slow, it yields little and concentrates a lot. What it produces is not a broad portrait of the terroir, but a monologue – precise and of a density that can only be explained by age. Riccardo Campinoti vinifies the Vigna Vecchia like all his Brunello: concrete vats, natural yeasts, long maceration, then 36 months in large Slavonian oak barrels. No Riserva label – although the wine would justify it. Campinoti deliberately refrains from doing so. As in Burgundy, it is the location and terroir that count, not the category.
The 2021 shows what this vineyard can do when a vintage comes its way. Medium ruby red with the first delicate garnet reflections. The nose is ethereal and breathtakingly complex: rose, lavender, sour cherry, dried herbs, tar, a faint whisper of chalk and salt – all present at the same time, all in motion. A tannin reminiscent of chalk unfolds on the palate – finely powdered, sticky, of great precision. The acidity is lively and incisive, the finish long, mineral and persistent. Only 4,400 bottles. This wine needs time. A lot of time. But those who wait will understand what Montalcino can achieve at its highest sites. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2021 Brunello di Montalcino V.V. opens with a mentholated freshness as cedar shavings and allspice mix with dusty rose and redcurrants. Silken and sleek, it races across the palate, guided by zesty acidity as a cascade of crisp red berry fruits descends upon the senses. Youthfully tense, the palate aches as fine tannins flex and a citrus tinge slowly fades. Patience will be required to find its footing." Vinous
"This red delivers a solid beam of cherry, with hints of raspberry and pomegranate. Mineral and floral accents add depth as this remains focused and resonant through the lingering finish. A solid grip of tannins defines the ending, with all of the elements in the right place." Wine Spectator
"The 2021 Brunello di Montalcino Ragnaie V. V. comes from old vines planted at a lofty 600 meters in elevation on a one-hectare site composed of galestro and sandstone soils. The wine shows precision driven by a cooling altitude and the inherent complexity of old-vine fruit. Blue currant, frozen blueberry, mint, crushed stone, salt and pressed violet unfold over a medium-weight texture with remarkable clarity. This is a complete and finely tuned Brunello that showcases freshness, depth and site expression in beautiful harmony." Wine Advocate
