"Every vintage tells a different story." That is the principle behind Essenzia. No fixed profile, no recurring blend framework. Instead, a question that the Caiarossa estate asks itself anew every year: Which grape variety best expresses this vintage in its purest form? The answer changes. The high standards remain. In 2020, the choice fell on Petit Verdot for the first time. A decision that needs explaining – and which, once explained, makes perfect sense. In Bordeaux, Petit Verdot is a background blending partner: too late-ripening for the Médoc, too structured for a solo role in cool years. In coastal Tuscany, however, on the hills of Riparbella between Cecina and Volterra, this grape variety finds the warmth it needs. And in a year like 2020 – a mild winter, a dry summer with cool nights, and a refreshing rain at the end of August that perfectly completed the ripening process – , the Petit Verdot ripens to a level of completeness that was the exception in Bordeaux and, here in this special vintage, the rule.

Caiarossa is biodynamic by conviction. The Dutch Albada Jelgersma family, who also own Château Giscours and Château du Tertre in the Médoc, have managed this estate in Riparbella with the same rigour. Essenzia is released only in the finest vintages, in numbered bottles – and exclusively in magnums. The format that ages more slowly, that reveals depth, that calls for sharing. Hand-harvested from 19 September. Separate vinification in conical oak vats, slow fermentation, gentle extraction. After malolactic fermentation, 14 months in French barriques.

Intense, deep ruby-violet. On the nose, violets, lavender, dark plum, cassis, a hint of spice and ripe tannins – complex and of great aromatic density. Full-bodied and structured on the palate, with soft, well-matured tannins and a long finish characterised by floral and spicy notes.
