At the heart of the north-eastern Etna amphitheatre, where Silvia Maestrelli's vision turned to stone, lies Fessina: a name that sounds like a whisper through the volcanic winds. Here, in the Frazione Rovittello of Castiglione di Sicilia, between two ancient lava flows from 1809 and 1911, a dream came true in 2007. Silvia, the pioneer – a Tuscan with a Milanese soul and a Sicilian heart – was the first woman on the volcano to recognise the extraordinary potential of this difficult, masculine earth. With the tenacity of a visionary and the sensitivity of a "female oenological vision", she created a refuge of excellence after long negotiations with the countless owners of the fragmented plots.

Erse Bianco 2024 is the entry-level white wine in the Fessina portfolio and is the soul of Carricante vinified in stainless steel, combined with 20 per cent of the indigenous Minnella and Catarratto grape varieties from Rovittello's own vineyards. A deliberately young, direct wine with great drinkability and an evident mineral character. Made from a blend of Carricante grapes from the Contrade Caselle and Volpare in Milo and the Contrada Manzeudda in Biancavilla, this wine has a straw-yellow colour with greenish reflections. Its aroma unfolds scents of broom and mountain herbs, lemon peel and almonds, while white flowers complete the bouquet. On the palate, it reveals its volcanic origins: flint and minerality, paired with striking acidity and a lingering, herbaceous flavour that leads to a salty final. A wine that tells the story of this extraordinary land with every sip – between heaven and volcano, between tradition and innovation, between the memory of Silvia, who died far too soon, and the promise of the future.
