Within Falletto, there is a plot that Bruno Giacosa regarded as distinct from an early stage. Vigna Le Rocche – officially recognised as a distinct vineyard site within the Falletto MGA, situated in the upper part of the amphitheatre, facing south to south-west, and home to the oldest vines on the entire estate. 47-year-old vines, deeply rooted in the limestone-rich clay of Serralunga, at an altitude of over 400 metres. Lower yields, more concentrated grapes, and a bouquet that resembles that of Falletto – yet surpasses it.
Giacosa first decided to bottle Le Rocche separately with the 1997 vintage. Since then, the wine has been released as a standalone cuvée in every vintage – always with a white label, unless Bruna Giacosa decides to classify it as a Riserva: in that case, the label changes to red, the bottle ageing period doubles, and the wine enters a different realm. 2022 is not a Riserva vintage. But that does not mean that Le Rocche takes a back seat. Vinification is the same as for Falletto: destemming, 25 days' spontaneous fermentation in stainless-steel tanks, complete malolactic fermentation. 32 months in large French oak barrels. Then – the subtle difference – ten months' bottle ageing instead of six. Four more months of tranquillity, during which the wine learns what it is.
In the glass, an intense garnet red. The nose is more complex and deeper than that of the Falletto: rose petal, ripe fruit, orange peel, tobacco, spices, a hint of black truffle and damp clay – all in one. On the palate, it is full-bodied and creamy, with rounded tannins and a precision that never lets you forget its origins. The finish is long, spicy and mineral – and demands plenty of patience. "A beam of pure cherry marks this fruity, succulent Barolo, shaded by violet, menthol, iron and tobacco notes. Firm and dense, this ends with a mouthful of burly tannins." Wine Spectator
