“Segno Librandi” Cirò Rosato DOC 2025
Cirò is one of Italy's oldest wine-growing regions. Even the Greeks, who settled on the Calabrian coast in ancient times, called this place Krimisa and honoured the victors of the Olympic Games with its wine. Today, Cirò is Calabria's most important DOC – and Gaglioppo is its very soul. Librandi, which has had its roots in Cirò Marina since 1950, produces a Gaglioppo rosé here. Alberello and cordon training, on clay-limestone soil, harvested from the last week of September to the first week of October. Saignée with a short maceration period, aged in stainless steel, followed by a few months in bottle. The winery itself sums it up in a single sentence: "Vibrant like the waves of the sea." Fresh, soft and balanced on the palate, with a delicately bitter final that whets the appetite for more. Aperitivo, fish, seafood – or simply when the evening deserves an uncomplicated companion. “Insolia” Bianco Terre Siciliane IGT 2025
Sicily at altitude. The Insolia vines of Cusumano grow in the hills near Salemi and Monreale – with south-easterly exposure, slow ripening and pure mountain air. No drama, no feat of strength: the high altitude does the work. Hand-picked at the beginning of September, twelve hours of cold maceration at 8°C, gentle pressing, temperature-controlled fermentation at 18–20°C, four months on the fine lees in steel. Straw yellow colour, hawthorn, citrus peel, a hint of exotic fruit – fresh, delicate, with pleasant acidity and a light salty-mineral finish. SUPERIORE.DE

2025 vintage – italy's new balance
The Italian 2025 vintage stands for a return to the centre – not in the sense of arbitrariness, but as an expression of balance. After years of climatic extremes, many places are once again seeing a vintage that rewards precision and makes origin visible. At around 47.4 million hectolitres, nationwide production is once again close to the long-term average. However, the decisive factor is less the number than the character: freshness, clear contours and a noticeable differentiation between regions and sites characterise the picture. 2025 is not a year of quick effects, but one that promises substance – in the glass and in the cellar.
Conclusion: 2025 seems like a vintage that does not come through volume, but through precision. Those who love Italian classics because of their origin profiles are likely to find many wines here that emphasise precisely that: Freshness, contour and the desire to recognise "Italy" in the glass. Beyond the vineyards, 2025 is also creating a harmonious overall picture. In many places, the olive oil harvest benefits from the same climatic conditions as viticulture: well-stocked water reserves, a generally balanced vegetation cycle and a predominantly dry harvest phase. According to estimates by ISMEA (Istituto di Servizi per il Mercato Agricolo Alimentare, state institute for agricultural and food markets), yields are slightly up on the previous year, but quality is more important. Numerous oils show remarkable freshness, clear varietal typicity and a precise balance of bitterness and pungency – a vintage that convincingly emphasises origin and craftsmanship.
Classification with depth: MERUM
As always, the latest harvest report from MERUM magazine provides a well-founded perspective. Across Europe, the 2025 grape harvest amounted to 145.5 million hectolitres, slightly above the previous year but still below the five-year average. Although Italy has maintained its position as the world's largest wine producer ahead of France and Spain, MERUM makes it clear how ambivalent this leading role has become. Stagnating to declining demand, high stock levels and geopolitical uncertainties relativise the pure volume view.
Within Italy, the picture is clearly fragmented. With almost twelve million hectolitres, Veneto remains the region with the highest volume, followed by Apulia and Emilia-Romagna. These three regions account for almost 60 per cent of national production. The south was particularly dynamic in 2025 with significant growth, led by Apulia, Sicily, Abruzzo and Basilicata. The centre saw a slight decline overall, mainly due to Tuscany, which deliberately imported smaller quantities after an exceptionally high-yield year in 2024. The north showed stable to moderate growth, driven by Lombardy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Trentino-Alto Adige.
Climatically, 2025 was a challenging but manageable year in many places. Abundant winter and spring precipitation ensured solid water reserves, while a changeable summer with occasional hot spells often required an earlier and compact harvest. Disease pressure from peronospora or pests was present regionally, but could usually be controlled through consistent work in the vineyard. MERUM's conclusion is correspondingly differentiated, but positive overall: healthy grapes, clear stylistics and high quality where location, timing and craftsmanship worked together. The market is also categorised realistically. Demand is becoming more selective, simple qualities are becoming less important, while DOP wines are showing stability at home and abroad. Sparkling wines continue to gain in importance – a structural change that additionally emphasises the qualitative orientation of many companies.
South Tyrolean Wine Cons.: Precision
South Tyrol is a particularly good example of the 2025 vintage. Looking back, it was a wine year with strong weather fluctuations, early flowering and an exceptionally early, very fast harvest. The high temperatures in August significantly accelerated ripening, meaning that in many areas the grapes were harvested two to three weeks earlier than in the previous year. Precision was the decisive factor here: as the grapes were harvested exclusively by hand, the varieties and sites could be harvested at exactly the right time.
In terms of quality, the picture is clear. Good sites clearly stand out, both for white and red wines. Expect juicy, fresh red wines with substance and development potential from the best plots. In the white wines, lower sugar levels indicate moderate alcohol, clear acidity and high precision. Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon bianco and Chardonnay from exposed vineyards, where it was possible to wait for the ideal ripening time, were rated particularly favourably. South Tyrol thus confirms what characterises the vintage as a whole: Origin counts, timing is decisive.
