“Nanfrè" Valpolicella DOC 2023
A smoky blend of raspberry jam, sage and freshly ground pepper flows from the glass. Silky in texture on the palate and extremely flavoursome with the pepper notes from the bouquet, which mingle with salty minerals and lively acidity. Hardly any tannin. The finish is long and fruity with a hint of liquorice. A delicious accompaniment to food. SUPERIORE.DE

Valpolicella DOC 2023
Brigaldara's Valpolicella is mainly made from Corvina and Corvinone grapes. The timing of the harvest is very important for this wine, so that its flavours are very delicate and its sensory balance is influenced by the precisely measured acidity. It expresses the characteristic flavours of the valley: from cherries to spicy notes, which are more or less pronounced depending on the vintage. Its beautiful and radiant balance is achieved by a short maturation in steel, which perfectly enhances its sensory characteristics. SUPERIORE.DE

!["Cuvée XVII" Valpolicella Classico DOC 2024]()
“Cuvée XVII” Valpolicella Classico DOC 2024
XVII – the Roman seventeen honours the century in which the Rizzardi family acquired its first vineyards in Negrar in 1678. Since then, the house has cultivated the best vineyards in the Classico zone – pojega, Calcarole, Rovereti – on calcareous clay soils in the hills above the plain. Corvina and Corvinone form the backbone of this cuvée, with Rondinella, Merlot and Croatina providing the accents. Bright purple red in the glass. Shadow cherry and black pepper on the nose, with a hint of cherry blossom and Mediterranean herbs. Round and juicy on the palate, with an invigorating freshness and an earthy, herbal finish. Proof that Valpolicella has depth and character even without Appassimento – and an ideal introduction to the world of Guerrieri Rizzardi. SUPERIORE.DE

Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella and Cabernet Sauvignon from the hills between Illasi and Mezzane – the eastern heart of Valpolicella. The Castagnedi brothers leave the grapes to dry for twenty days after hand-picking, using the same appassimento technique that characterises their Amarone. Twelve months in French tonneaux give the wine structure without obscuring its fruit. Dense ruby red in colour, with a nose of sour cherry, wild berries and black pepper over a base of cocoa and liquorice. Velvety on the palate, full-bodied and with well-integrated tannins. Zenato has stood for reliable quality from the Veneto region since 1960 – no experiments, but solid craftsmanship over generations. Corvina Veronese forms the backbone with 85 per cent, supplemented by Rondinella and Corvinone from the 35 hectares of own vineyards. The grapes are harvested by hand in October, de-stemmed and macerated in stainless steel for ten days before the wine matures for twelve months in large oak barrels.

“Monti Garbi” Valpolicella Superiore Ripasso DOC 2022
Steep slopes, barren limestone, untamed nature – the Monti Garbi above Mezzane di Sotto are not pleasing wine country. When the Castagnedi brothers opened up these rugged heights in 1989, people in eastern Valpolicella were still focussing on quantity. They focussed on character. The grapes are harvested by hand and gently pressed. In October, the young wine undergoes its second birth: re-fermentation on the pomace of the estate's own Amarone – ripasso in the original sense. Malolactic fermentation and ageing in Liters tonneaux lend depth without heaviness. Ruby red in colour, juicy and enveloping, infused with a spicy freshness that owes its signature to the chalky white skeletal soils. Great value! SUPERIORE.DE

“Delara” Montebaldo Bardolino DOC 2023
In the 1820s, wine merchants knew three Bardolino crus that existed in Switzerland's grand hotels alongside Burgundy and Beaujolais. In 1968, they were lost in the DOC regulations. They have been back since 2021 – and Montebaldo, the northernmost and highest subzone on the foothills of Monte Baldo, is perhaps the most exciting. Guerrieri Rizzardi's response to this rediscovery: 95 per cent Corvina – the highest percentage the winery has ever bottled –complemented by a touch of Rondinella, vinified completely without wood. This is not a concession to light summer enjoyment. It is a statement about transparency: the grape speaks exclusively here, and the moraine soil of Cavaion gives it a resonance chamber.

“Capitel San Rocco” Valpolicella Ripasso Superiore DOC 2022
The grapes for this Ripasso come from the Marne Bianche vineyard at Tenuta Maternigo – a vineyard that has been run by the Tedeschi family for generations. Corvina and Corvinone (35% each), Rondinella (20%) and 10% indigenous varieties such as Rossignola, Oseleta, Negrara and Dindarella grow here on moraine clay and limestone with a density of 5,500 vines per hectare. Vinification follows the classic Ripasso method: After 15 days of maceration at 28°C, the young Valpolicella is fermented on the marc of Amarone and Recioto – eight to ten days at a cool 18°C. This "second passage" gives the wine fullness and depth without stifling its freshness. It then matures for 15 months in Slavonian oak and a further six months in the bottle.

“Pojega” Ripasso Valpolicella Classico Superiore DOC 2023
Pojega is a historic vineyard next to the famous Pojega garden, which was purchased by the Rizzardi family in the 17th century. The single-vineyard Valpolicella skilfully combines the fruitiness and increased aromatic richness of the traditional grape with a well-proportioned body and extraordinary finesse. Great value with an almost magnetic attraction! SUPERIORE.DE

If there is one Italian wine region where red wine lovers can find everything their hearts desire, it is the Valpolicella zone in Veneto, located east of Lake Garda near the Soave area between the cities of Bardolino and Verona. The name Valpolicella itself derives from the Latin term "Vallis Poli Cellae" and translates as "the valley of many cellars", whose growing area hides a rich variety of wine styles that have often been overlooked due to the prominence of Amarone wine.
The reason for this varied wine repertoire is that Valpolicella winemakers process their harvested grapes into light, juicy wines, while they press the stronger versions using the appassimento process from dried grapes. From the concentrated Amarone to its more delicate counterparts, however, they are all made from 45-95% late-ripening Corvina, which provides intense fruit notes and is usually blended with up to 30-50% local varieties Corvinone, Rondinella, Molinara and Oseleta.
The bottles that carry the Classico addition on the label come from the historic Valpolicella Classico core zone with its very hilly vineyard sites that stretch along the towns of Fumane, Marano, San Pietro in Cariano, Sant'Ambrogio and Negrar.
The lighter wines include the simple Valpolicella and the Valpolicella Classico, which convince with fruity aromas of sour cherries, blackberries, light bitter notes and a nice acidity. These young red wines are often served slightly chilled and are particularly appealing to those who actually prefer white wine. As an entry-level category, they are the true calling card of a good winemaker who devotes the same care and passion to the production of his less expensive Valpolicella wines as he does to his precious Amarone bottles.
If you are looking for a little more zest and spice in addition to stimulating fruity notes, climb further up the quality pyramid and try the somewhat more structured Valpolicella wines labelled Superiore. This somewhat tart but nevertheless fruity style of wine has an alcohol content of 12% and its official minimum maturation period of one year may well take place in wooden barrels.
Even more intensity and structure are offered by the Valpolicella wines with the addition Ripasso, which are partly produced from dried grapes. The fact that this refined style of wine is also called a "baby Amarone" is explained by the Ripasso production method, with which the flavourful character of the Valpolicella wines is enhanced by the addition of pressed grape skins from Amarone production. The result is a style of wine that is the link between the bracingly fruity versions and the powerful Amarone, delighting with intense notes of dried fruits, spices, delicate tannins and slightly more alcohol - and more affordable compared to its better-known big brother.
So while you can certainly start the evening with a young and lively Valpolicella and then move on to the Superiore or Ripasso wines, a slightly chilled glass of Recioto della Valpolicella is certainly the perfect way to end it. This rich red wine made from dried grapes is the sweet twin of Amarone and was considered the true star of the Valpolicella region long before its hype. If we now add to this the excellent IGT wines, which do not have DOC status only because of their choice of grape variety, then we are sure that there is something exciting for every red wine lover in our Valpolicella range.
