Vintage 2018 marks Vietti's exciting Barolo debut from one of Piedmont's most famous vineyards, characterised by exuberant aromas and bright, red-tinged fruit. Some wines have to fight for their recognition over years, while others are in the limelight from birth. For a long time, Barolo Le Vigne was the "second" Barolo in the Sandrone family, standing in the shadow of the iconic Cannubi Boschi – until connoisseurs and critics gradually realised that there was no hierarchy here, but rather equality. Today, after more than three decades since the first vintage in 1990, Le Vigne is no longer a complement to Aleste, but its congenial partner – a wine that perfects the ancient Piedmontese art of blending several vineyard sites and increasingly holds a candle to Aleste.

Barolo Lazzarito 2019, which obtains its fruit from Serralunga d'Alba, is built like a pyramid. It stands on a thick base of robust fruit and power and rises in intensity thanks to its wonderfully elevated bouquet. It shows direct and solid lines with blackberries, plums, spices, tar, liquorice, candied orange peel and truffle-infused earth. A second wave of flavours offers dark minerals, iron ore and rust. Baroli from Serralunga d'Alba are often in a category of their own thanks to their richness and sheer abundance of fruit. With additional aeration, the Lazzarito, certified organic for the first time in this vintage, delivers mint and fine balsamic herbs and will fully inspire with further maturation in the bottle. Barolo Brunate is a powerful and vertical wine, endowed with enormous explosive energy and intensity. Crushed flowers, mint, spices and dried flowers open up in the glass, but it is the energy of the wine that really lifts it into the stratosphere. In the glass, the 2019 is dark, almost sombre, and full of the sepia-coloured nuances that are so typical of this great Barolo vineyard. 2019 is an outstanding vintage for Brunate and the first with organic certification. Barolo Percristina is a wine that shines like a legacy in the history of Domenico Clerico. Grown in the renowned Mosconi cru vineyard in Monforte d'Alba between 390 and 410 metres above sea level, the Nebbiolo vines here are rooted in a soil consisting of calcareous marl with fossil deposits, silt, clay and a hint of sand. The location gives the wine a vein that is both powerful and precise – a terroir that promotes depth and longevity. Named after Clerico's daughter Cristina, Percristina is not just a wine, but a very personal dedication and the flagship of the house. It is only vinified in the best years.

912 bottles. That's all the plot has to offer. And sometimes the most precious things are right on the doorstep. Behind the family home, below the Vigna Terlo, opposite Le Coste – romina, Luca's partner, owns seventeen hundred square metres of Nebbiolo there. What began as a family vineyard became the youngest and rarest growth in the Roagna portfolio in 2013: a Barolo from Barolo, from the municipality that gave everything its name. Luca deliberately refrains from using an MGA designation. His Terlo, he says, behaves differently from its neighbours – earthier, more idiosyncratic, less characterised by the finesse that distinguishes Coste and Ravera. However, the cool microclimate of the site gives the wine a beautiful tension and a chalky tannin – and the soil that organic sweetness that reminds critics of redcurrant, iris and damp potting soil.

At the heart of the Bricco Boschis lies a plot of just 2.38 hectares, which is considered the noblest corner of one of the most famous crus in the entire Barolo region: Vigna San Giuseppe. Here, on a medium slope with an ideal south-eastern exposure, 60-year-old Nebbiolo vines are rooted in the geological wonder that has shaped Cavallotto's wines for almost a century. It is the essence of Piedmontese winemaking, condensed into a few square metres – a monument to patience that is only vinified as a Riserva in the very best vintages. Good to know: The 2019 vintage is considered one of the most classic in recent history – a year that revived the great traditions of Barolo. Vigna San Giuseppe combines all the virtues of Bricco Boschi in its purest form: The complex geology of calcareous marl and layers of sand, the perfect drainage of the steep slopes, the unique microclimate that combines warm days with cool nights. The 60-year-old vines have sunk their roots deep into these ancient sea beds and produce grapes of exceptional concentration and elegance. The long ageing period – almost twice as long as the "normal" Bricco Boschis – gives the wine that unrivalled complexity and harmony that makes it one of the great Barolo wines of our time.

Barolo Ginestra Ciabot Mentin DOCG 2019 comes from one of Monforte's most prestigious parcels with a south-south-easterly exposure at an altitude of around 400 metres. The old Nebbiolo vines are deeply rooted in calcareous marl with veins of clay and sand, which gives the wine intensity and finesse. The 2019 vintage is considered one of the most classic of the last decade: long, balanced vegetation, mild summer heat and cool September nights produced grapes of rare aromatic precision. After being harvested by hand, the grapes were carefully vinified and matured in French oak for around 30 months.

Verduno is a different side of Barolo. The northernmost municipality of the appellation lies on the Tanaro, in the immediate neighbourhood of the hills of Barbaresco – and the Monvigliero, the village's crowning amphitheatre, creates a mystery out of pleasure: Marne di Sant'Agata soils, 55% clay, 30% sand, 15% limestone, the slopes open to the south and south-west, 240 metres. A terroir with elements of Tortonian and Serravalian, which is geologically unique and produces Nebbiolo – and produces Nebbiolo that is more perfume than structure, more elegance than mass. Vietti adopts whole-cluster fermentation for this – a rare decision for Barolo, which gives Monvigliero the airy, herb-scented profile for which the vineyard is famous. The 44-year-old vines – dense, low-yielding, deeply rooted – were harvested at the end of September. Then three to four days of cold maceration, 20 days of maceration, malolactic fermentation in used barriques, 24 months in large wooden barrels.

Baroli from Serralunga d'Alba are often in a category of their own thanks to their richness and sheer abundance of fruit and simultaneous austerity. Initially restrained red fruit on the nose, dense and very concentrated on the palate. Lazzarito 2021 impresses with its powerful but ripe tannins, typical of Serralunga. This assertive and still very youthful wine is very long-lived and has an impressive drive on the impressively long finish. Let's give it the time it needs and it will delight us completely. Rocche di Castiglione is prized for its pure white, chalky soils, which produce wines of exceptional finesse and a wide range of flavours. For lovers of timeless Nebbiolo, it is a real hit. The vines are located not far from the winery, which blends into the stone walls and urban fabric of the village of Castiglione Falletto. The vineyard is about one hectare in size. Rocche di Castiglione is a curiously shaped and elongated MGA with a unique south-east exposure along a steep ravine, with Bussia to the west and Perno to the east. This site is characterised by freshness, extreme precision, straightforwardness, structure and balanced freshness.

Serradenari means "holds the money" – a medieval nickname for those who fled to the cool heights after the plague and carried their savings under their arm. The history of the village is inscribed in its name. Giulia Negri built the family vineyard on this cru, at 480 metres, exposed to the south-west, in a natural amphitheatre that envelops the grapes on all sides. The soil is Messiniano – sandy-loamy clay with a strong limestone marl layer and sub-acidic pH. An acidic soil makes minerals more readily available, the vines more vigorous, the grapes smaller and thicker-skinned. More extract, finer tannin, more structure. Spontaneous fermentation, 45 days of maceration – the longest maceration of the three parcels. Then around 30 months in 25-hectolitre Austrian oak barrels.

Alfredo Currado made history in 1961. Together with Prunotto's Bussia, Vietti released the first single-vineyard Barolo of the modern era – rocche di Castiglione. Since then, this vineyard has been inextricably linked with the name Vietti. Rocche is located in Castiglione Falletto directly opposite the winery, on the most exposed ridge in the municipality: soils from both geological eras – tortonian and Serravalian – in rare stratification on top of each other, exposed to the south to south-west, 250 to 320 metres. A transitional location between the elegance of the western communes and the vigour of the Serralunga style. The result is a Barolo with an aristocratic bearing – superbly structured without ever boasting about it. Maceration for 20 days, malolactic fermentation in used barriques, 24 months in large wooden barrels. In 2022, Vietti harvested earlier than usual – the Rocche holds heat differently than the lower-lying vineyards and required different decisions.

Around 60% of the grapes for the Monvigliero are not destemmed, which enhances the aromatic nuances of the wine. The utterly enchanting 2021 Monvigliero is delicate and supple with aromas of cherries, boysenberries, violets and spices, with an excellent balance and a lingering aftertaste that reflects the main flavour themes. The second novelty of the 2018 vintage is Vietti's Barolo Monvigliero. The special feature: Approx. 60% of the grapes are not destemmed, which enhances the aromatic nuances of the wine. Youthful notes of raspberry and blueberry are flanked by black pepper, gentian, porcelain and black olives. The palate has a beguilingly soft texture, fine and creamy, underpinned by wonderful laurel and floral aromas. Monvigliero impresses with its purity, its serenity and its class. Excellent. Ravera is located in the south-western corner of the appellation, in Novello – the coolest of all Barolo communes, where the wind from the Cottian Alps blows through the valleys and gives the Nebbiolo the freshness it needs in the hot summers of the Langhe. Ever since Elvio Cogno recognised the potential of this site, Ravera has been considered one of the most exciting crus in the entire Barolo region – and Vietti is one of the houses that has redefined its style compass with Ravera. Tortonian soils, calcareous marl, more sand than in Serralunga – this results in a texture of independent elegance. The vines face south-east, harvesting the morning sun and enjoying the cooling Alpine winds in the afternoon. 2022 was not an easy year here: the drought required precise cultivation and careful selection. Vietti harvested earlier than usual – and received grapes of unusual clarity in return.

Ravera, located in the municipality of Novello, is one of the best Barolo vineyards that continues to surprise and impress despite the changing climate. Thanks to the high altitude and the open view of the snow-capped mountains, the microclimate is well ventilated but at the same time protected. Freshly cut flowers, white pepper and mint energise a wine that is now very shy and tightly wound. But it wouldn't be Ravera if pickled dark cherries, lavender, mint, crushed stones and sage weren't pouring out of the glass, creating a powerful, breathtaking Barolo endowed with great purity. Vietti's Brunate parcels are located on the La Morra side of the cru site. It was fermented in stainless steel and then transferred directly to large oak barrels for ageing. Barolo Brunate is a powerful and vertical wine, endowed with enormous explosive energy and intensity. It offers engaging and penetrating aromas of cedar wood, red cherry, blood orange, sage flowers and rose. On the palate, its austere personality is evident and any connoisseur will realise that it needs a few more years in the bottle to develop. Dense and multi-layered, with great depth, chewy tannins and lingering red berries, this is already a fantastically complete wine. SUPERIORE.DE

Lazzarito is located in Serralunga d'Alba – the eastern municipality that has the most decisive say in Barolo geography. The soils are Serravalian: compact sandstone, quartz-rich sand, little fertility, but a mineral structure that gives the Nebbiolo depth and tannin density that cannot be found elsewhere. Lazzarito is located in the northern part of Serralunga, exposed to the south-west at 330 to 380 metres above sea level – a vineyard that keeps the sun for a long time and uses the cool autumn nights for aromatic ripening. 2022 was a particular test in Serralunga: drought, early harvest, vineyards that reacted to the heat. Vietti harvested the grapes in the second half of September – three to four days of cold maceration, then 20 days of maceration under immersion conditions, malolactic fermentation in used barriques, 24 months in large wooden barrels.

Deep dark sparkling ruby with a fine garnet rim. On the nose, a colourful bouquet of black cherry, elderberry, graphite and a strong cassis note. On the powerful palate, the black fruits again, plus a wonderful balance and freshness with a picture-book tannin that further rounds off the perfect impression. Fine energy and harmony. Chiara's Barolo from the Mosconi single vineyard of the same name is powerful, muscular and full of opulence. Rich, bright ruby red colour. Rich aromas of eucalyptus, wild rosemary, plum and black cherry. Deep and powerful on the palate with beautiful spicy accents, dense tannins and a very juicy structure. For us, this Barolo belongs in the top class of the appellation, it always carries its great weight with maximum elegance and is highly authentic, completely in the style of Chiara Boschis, who has once again delivered something really great here. Cannubi. Three syllables that sound like an anthem in the world of Barolo. The most famous vineyard in the Langhe, the heart of the municipality of Barolo, the absolute king among the crus – so say the insiders. Almost one hundred per cent white clay, gently rolling hills between Barolo, La Morra and Novello. A site that does not possess the masculine power of Serralunga or Castiglione, but instead shows the finer, more Burgundian side of Nebbiolo: red fruit, finesse, harmony. Here, where Sandrone and Scavino also make their best wines, Silvia Altare has been cultivating just 0.25 hectares since 2011 – two leased plots that only fill four barriques. Less than 1,500 bottles per year. A privilege for a few.
