Friulano Friuli DOC 2024
Delicate straw yellow colour with greenish reflections. This classic and extremely harmonious Friulano is youthfully fresh and at the same time full of character. The bouquet is finely nuanced with aromas of yellow pear, ripe citrus fruit, almond blossom and a hint of hay. The palate is dry, balanced and textured, with ripe fruit, well-integrated acidity and the slightly tart almond note typical of the variety on the finish. An authentic representative of the grape variety that shows how harmoniously tradition and modern drinking flow go together. SUPERIORE.DE

Friulano Friuli Colli Orientali DOC 2024
Pale straw yellow with a greenish tinge - a Friulano with a classic appearance and modern clarity. On the nose, white flowers, Williams pear, a hint of yellow apple and a delicate almond note - typical of the indigenous grape variety. Dry, soft and balanced on the palate with fine fruit, a subtle herbal flavour and a pleasant almondy finish. The ageing in stainless steel brings out the varietal typicity particularly clearly and leaves room for the fresh, accessible nature of this wine. An honest, very successful Friulano that charmingly combines drinking pleasure and origin - charming and with character. SUPERIORE.DE

“del Pompiere” Friulano Friuli DOC 2023
Mario Schiopetto was born in 1930, he grew up in the family-owned Osteria ai Pompieri and had his first professional experiences as a fireman and later as a truck driver. In 1963, guided only by his taste and love of wine, he began to devote himself to wine production in his parents' farm and produced the first pure Tocai in 1965. The historic label at the time included the drawing of his fire engine, which he also used to deliver the wine to customers. With the 2019 vintage, the winery recalled these historical roots and resumed the cute drawing on part of its wine labels.

Friulano Friuli Colli Orientali DOC 2024
Tunella's Friulano is an archetype straight out of a picture book – authentic, balanced and with fine depth. The vines grow on the typical Ponca soils of the Colli Orientali, whose limestone-marl structure gives the wine mineral tension. White-fleshed fruit, almond blossom, ripe apple and a delicate hint of hay on the nose. Fresh yet gentle on the palate, with a soft texture, moderate acidity and a slightly almondy final typical of the variety. The 2024 vintage brings clarity, harmony and freshness to the glass – a characterful all-rounder with a strong regional identity. SUPERIORE.DE

Friulano Friuli Colli Orientali DOC 2024
Livio Felluga's Friulano is very fresh and tropical, with nuances of sour melon, young mango and white smoke forming its attractive bouquet. It impresses with a lively acidity that balances the silky texture and ripe fruit, and with a spicy herbal note that gives it unexpected depth. Perfumed and fresh to the final, leaving a pleasant mouthfeel, with hints of bitter almond but also a gentle streak of residual tension. Very nice. SUPERIORE.DE

Schiopetto's Friulano is youthfully unobtrusive with a pretty bouquet that blends lemon peel with mint and hints of crushed rock. It washes over the palate with a tense mix of citrusy acids and salty minerals, while a core of tropical melon develops towards the end. Finishes on a more delicate note, but long and with pretty inner flowers that still linger. The beautiful balance and underlying power of this wine will guarantee good ageing in the bottle. “Vigna del Rolat” Friulano Collio DOC 2024
The Vigna del Rolat vineyard – barely two hectares in size – lies on the south-eastern slopes of Monte Quarin. There, where the view extends over the gentle waves of the Collio as far as Slovenia. Here, on the fossilised marl soils of the Ponca, Friulano has been growing for generations. The grape variety that defines the Collio like no other. Dario Raccaro is not a man of big words. His family has been cultivating these slopes since 1928, and nothing has changed in his philosophy over the decades: The vineyard speaks, the winemaker translates. The Vigna del Rolat is considered by connoisseurs to be one of the most important single vineyards in the Collio, and the Friulano produced from it has the class that recently led Daniele Cernilli from Doctor Wine to name it the best white wine in Italy. It is a wine that lingers.

Friulano Friuli Colli Orientali DOC 2024
A great Friulano from small plots: Paolo Meroi vinifies his single-varietal white wine from vines over 40 years old on barren flysch soils around Buttrio and Rosazzo – a terroir that provides depth and precision. The wine is matured traditionally in barriques with long lees contact, which gives the wine structure and subtle maturity. Brilliant straw yellow in the glass with golden reflections. The nose is complex and finely interwoven: ripe pear, white peach, candied citrus fruit, lime blossom and a hint of herbal honey. Delicate hints of hazelnut, beeswax and wet stone in the background. Powerful, silky and elegantly textured on the palate. The acidity is well integrated and the salty minerality characterises the long, powerful finish. A Friulano of a special calibre – dense, complex and with an unmistakable character of origin. Paolo Merois' signature is palpable: authentic, precise, fully committed to Friuli. SUPERIORE.DE

“San Zuan” Friulano Friuli Colli Orientali DOC 2022
"San Zuan" is a manifesto of Friulano and one of the great interpretations of this indigenous grape variety. The vines are planted in a south-facing single vineyard above San Giovanni al Natisone, characterised by the typical Ponca soils of marl and sandstone. Here, where the warm days of the Collio meet cool downdraughts from the Julian Alps, grapes with an impressive aromatic density and an exciting structure are produced. The 2022 vintage was harmonious: sufficient rainfall in spring, a warm, dry summer and cool nights during the ripening phase. The grapes were harvested strictly selectively by hand, gently pressed and fermented and matured in large, used wooden barrels. The wine matured on the fine lees for several months, gaining depth without losing its characteristic clarity.

“San Zuan” Friulano Friuli Colli Orientali DOC 2023
"San Zuan" is one of the great interpretations of Friulano every year – and in the 2023 vintage it shows a slightly different facet. The single vineyard site above San Giovanni al Natisone, characterised by barren Ponca soils, benefits from a microclimate that combines warmth and alpine freshness. 2023 brought a rather unsettled spring with variable rainfall and later a hot, dry summer that put the vines to the test. However, cool September nights preserved the acidity and lent the grapes precision and flavour. The grapes were harvested in several stages at the end of September, gently pressed and traditionally matured in large, used wooden barrels. The prolonged contact with the lees gave the wine depth and a creamy but never opulent texture.

Ronco della Chiesa is another inspiring expression from one of Italy's most exciting white wine artists: the wine is made from 100% Friulano and is aged for 10 months in barriques. Its complexity is extraordinary. The wine grows in intensity with every passing minute, with notes of white peach, nectarine, poached pear and crushed limestone. “M – Mario Schiopetto” Friulano Collio DOC 2020 · MAGNUM in OWC
2020 was a challenging year in Collio, characterised by a warm spring, extreme weather at times and a hot, dry summer. The harvest required precision and patience - and that is exactly what the "M" has in its blood. The estate's top-quality Friulano comes from old vines in the best locations around Capriva, which combine low yields with an intense concentration of flavours. The vinification process is purist as usual: slow fermentation in stainless steel, long contact with the lees and plenty of time for internal clarification.

Lovers of Friuli certainly know it as Tocai or Tocai Friulano. And if you listen to some of the older winegrowers in the Cormons area, you would never think that this grape variety could not actually come from there.
However, vine researchers found out that the variety originated in the Bordelais and was formerly blended with Sauvignon blanc and Semillon. Even though it is practically extinct around Bordeaux, it is Sauvignonasse, which could be freely translated as Sauvignon-like. Which is why it used to be often confused, especially in South America, where it was often placed between Sauvignon blanc and then actually resulted in a mixed set.
For Friuli, however, it is now simply one of the most important grape varieties. Why they were originally called Tocai or Tocai Friulano is controversial. There are countless stories. It is said that the grape variety was brought from Tokaj by a count who loved the Tokaj. Other stories tell of seedlings that were brought from Friuli to Hungary in the 13th century. All the other stories are probably fictional, too, because the grape variety has only been native to Friuli since the 19th century and has nothing to do with the Hungarian grape variety Furmint. Since 2007, Tocai may no longer appear on the label in order to avoid confusion with Tokaj, since then only Friulano has been on the label.
Friulano matures relatively early and is susceptible to botrytis, mildew and ESCA in humid summers. You therefore have to invest a lot of work in the vineyards. Almost always intense in colour, with rich gold, usually quite full-bodied, with herbal spices, yellow fruit aromas and delicate almond flavour, Friulano is quite typical and easy to recognise even in blind tastings. DNA analyses have not yet been able to identify any known parent vines, only the assumption of some ampelographers that it is Sauvignonasse was confirmed. However, Friulano is the cross partner of the Italian new breeds Fleurtai and Soreli.
Worldwide there are not even 4,500 hectares of the grape variety, 3,000 of which are in Italy alone. In addition to Friuli Venezia Giulia, it is still present in small quantities in Lazio, Lombardy and Veneto, where it is found as Tai in some DOC and DOCG wines. SUPERIORE.DE
