“Forcole” Chianti Classico DOCG 2021
Forcole is produced in a surprisingly small quantity for a Chianti Classico - just 15,000 bottles. The bouquet begins with a slender texture and aromas of wild berries, sour cherries, pressed violets and sweet earth. Supple, generous and inviting on the palate, it captures all the natural intensity of the vintage. Its attractive silky tannins and the rather darker and crispy-cool Sangiovese flavour profile of the Panzano region make it a great soloist as well as food companion. SUPERIORE.DE

!["Vigneti La Selvanella" Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2021]()
“Vigneti La Selvanella” Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2021
A wine that made history. When the first vintage of La Selvanella Riserva was presented in 1969, it was a revolution in Chianti Classico – the very first cru from a single vineyard in the entire region. Today, over 50 years later, this Sangiovese classic is still regarded as a benchmark for the elegance and purity of the Radda terroirs. The 50 hectares of the La Selvanella vineyard sit at an altitude of 350 to 550 metres above Radda in Chianti in one of the most privileged positions in the entire region. Wines of exceptional structure and lively acidity are produced here. The perfect south-west exposure and the temperate continental climate create ideal conditions for the capricious Sangiovese to develop its full aromatic complexity.

Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2021 (BIO)
Two names define this Riserva: Il Corno and Poggio Selvale. It is from these two premier vineyards, situated between 350 and 450 metres above sea level, that the Sangiovese grapes come from which Castello di Radda crafts its classic Riserva style. The clay-limestone soils, with their high proportion of galestro and alberese – the region's characteristic calcareous shale – lend the wine mineral depth and structural complexity. In this coolest part of the Chianti Classico region, where dense forests surround the vineyards and the temperature fluctuations between day and night are particularly pronounced, the Sangiovese reveals its most elegant side. After hand-harvesting, the grapes are destemmed and fermented in 50-hectolitre stainless-steel tanks. Maceration on the skins lasts three to four weeks – a luxury afforded only by fully ripe grapes from prime vineyards. Malolactic fermentation takes place in wood before the wine begins its 20-month ageing process: in second- and third-use French tonneaux and in 20-hectolitre Slavonian oak barrels. A nine-month period of bottle ageing completes the wine's development.

Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2021 (BIO)
Wine has been produced here since 1051 – initially by monks, and since 1846 by the Stucchi Prinetti family, now in its seventh generation. Badia a Coltibuono, the "Abbey of the Good Harvest", was the first leading winery in Chianti to switch entirely to organic cultivation. The Riserva is made from massalblend of Sangiovese and historic complementary varieties such as Canaiolo and Ciliegiolo, grown on the highest hills near Gaiole. Spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts, three weeks' contact with the skins, followed by 24 months in French and Austrian oak barrels. The 2021 vintage benefited from a cool year with late frosts – lower yields, but concentrated quality.

In 1090, while Leif Erikson was discovering America and the first universities in Europe were being established, two friends of Abbot Rolando paid "two capons, three loaves of bread and six silver denarii from Lucca" for the annual lease of a vineyard in the divine valley of Dievole. Nine hundred (Novecento) years later, in 1990, this wine was created as a reminiscence of the incredible journey through the centuries. The grapes thrive between 300 and 420 metres above sea level on stony soils of marl, limestone and galestro. The vines, which are on average 15 years old and cultivated organically as in the early days of this domain, undergo a 14-day spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts in cement vats before maturing for 18 months in large, unroasted French Allier oak barrels.

“Lareale” Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2021 (BIO)
At the dizzying heights of Lamole, one of the highest-altitude appellations in Chianti Classico, the Sangiovese grapes for this exceptional Riserva thrive at altitudes of between 470 and 655 metres. The historic terraces, built from local Macigno del Chianti – that characteristic sandstone which stores the sun's heat during the day and releases it again at night – create a unique microclimate for this certified organic wine. Lareale brings together grapes from two of Lamole's finest vineyards: "Il Prato" and "Le Masse". 95% Sangiovese, complemented by five% Canaiolo Nero, results – following visual berry selection and a two-week maceration – in a Chianti Classico of remarkable elegance and austerity. Over two years' ageing in oak barrels lends the wine additional complexity and structure.

Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2021 (BIO)
The Conca d'Oro – the golden basin. This is what the winegrowers of Panzano call the natural depression in the terrain south of Greve, where the sun arrives earlier and stays longer than elsewhere in Chianti Classico. The slope, the Galestro-Alberese soil, the air circulation between the hills: everything comes together to create a microclimate that gives the Sangiovese the depth and fruit ripeness that is exceptional elsewhere, year after year. Gagliole lies at the centre of it all – a small, carefully managed winery that has been showing what Panzano can achieve in this price range since the Riserva première in the 2018 vintage. 100% Sangiovese from vines over twenty years old, organically farmed, hand-picked, fermented in steel. What follows is a well thought-out ageing process: ten months in small used oak barrels, then five months in cement tanks – a combination that gives the wine structure without over-moulding it. Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2021 (BIO)
"Querciabella" – beautiful oak. The name says it all for a winery that has been one of the leading producers shaping the style of Chianti Classico since 1974. Sebastiano Cossia Castiglioni was one of the first to switch to organic viticulture here – as early as 1988, when the word "organic" still raised eyebrows in the wine industry. Since 2000, Querciabella has been practising biodynamic viticulture and today manages the largest certified biodynamic vineyard in Italy. The fact that Daniele Cernilli (Dr Wine) named the estate "Cantina dell'Anno" in 2024 came as no surprise to anyone familiar with these wines. The Riserva blends Sangiovese from three of the finest vineyards in Chianti Classico: Greve brings vibrancy and bright fruit, Radda firm tannins and dark berry notes, and Gaiole riper fruit and distinctive limestone minerality. The altitudes of between 350 and 550 metres ensure cool nights and slow ripening. In the cellar, each plot is vinified and matured separately – a process of micro-vinification that preserves the terroir of each vineyard and only brings them together into a multi-layered whole during the final blend. Sixteen months in French barriques and tonneaux lend structure without overpowering the wine.

1172 – the year in which Volpaia is first mentioned in documents. A small, fortified borgo on a hill north of Radda in Chianti, built as a border fortress between Florence and Siena. Today it is a jewel of peace and beauty and one of the most historic wine villages in Tuscany. Here, where soldiers once stood guard, the Stianti-Mascheroni families now press their grapes within the medieval walls. The bottles mature in the vaults of old churches and almost every cellar contains a tank of organic wine. An entire village dedicated to viticulture. So complete that it becomes poetic again. The Riserva is made from 100% Sangiovese from vineyards between 400 and 600 metres above sea level. One of the highest wineries in the region. Up here, where the air is thin and the nights are cool, Sangiovese develops the elegance and minerality that makes Volpaia so distinctive. Sandstone, clay and sandy-loamy soils with a high proportion of skeleton. Manual harvest in the second half of September, temperature-controlled vinification, then 24 months in French and Slovenian oak barrels.

![Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castellina DOCG 2021]()
Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castellina DOCG 2021
There are wines that define an appellation. And there are wines that show where an appellation can go. The Gran Selezione from Lilliano belongs to the second category. When the Chianti Classico producers created the new top of the quality pyramid in 2010, there was a great deal of scepticism: is there really a need for another category above the Riserva? Lilliano answered this question with deeds rather than words. While other estates defined their Gran Selezione with an international use of wood and concentrated opulence, Lilliano remained true to its line: tradition, terroir, typicity. The Gran Selezione comes exclusively from the two best single vineyards of the Tenuta – piagge and Casina, both situated at an altitude of around 300 metres, both characterised by the calcareous Alberese soils that make Castellina in Chianti one of the most mineral terroirs in the entire appellation. Piagge is south-facing, fully exposed to the sun, and produces Sangiovese of concentration and vigour. Casina, on the other hand, exposed to the east-south-east, produces Colorino and Sangiovese of elegance and aromatic finesse. Together they produce a cuvée of 90% Sangiovese and 5% each of Colorino and Merlot – an assemblage that seeks perfection within the rules rather than innovation.

A wine that takes its name from the estate's last noble family – and thus from a man who left his mark far beyond the world of wine. Count Guido Chigi Saracini, born in Siena in 1880, was not only the lord of Poggio Bonelli, but also a passionate patron of the arts. In 1932, he founded the Accademia Musicale Chigiana, which remains one of the world's most renowned centres for musical education to this day. He spent the milder seasons at his estate in Castelnuovo Berardenga – where the grapes for this Gran Selezione ripen today. It represents the pinnacle of the Chianti Classico hierarchy: exclusively Sangiovese from the finest south-facing slopes at altitudes of between 280 and 360 metres, where sun and wind ensure consistent ripening and aromatic complexity. Strictly limited yields of 50 quintals per hectare, twelve days of temperature-controlled fermentation, followed by a further ten days of maceration on the skins. “Vigneto di Campolungo” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2021 (BIO)
The history of the Campolungo vineyard blends millennia of Tuscan wine-growing culture with a visionary dedication to perfection. These historic terraces, situated at altitudes of between 420 and 580 metres, were already recognised by the Romans as exceptional and have been regarded as one of the cradles of fine Chianti since the 19th century. The 2018 vintage tells the story of a particularly favourable climate: following a hot, dry summer, Lamole's extreme altitude preserved that crystalline freshness which makes Campolungo one of Tuscany's most exceptional single-vineyard sites. A pure Sangiovese made from hand-picked grapes of exceptional aromatic intensity. Following careful hand-harvesting and visual selection of the finest berries, the wine undergoes a two-week fermentation with skin contact in traditional wooden vats. Thirty months' ageing in oak casks, complemented by a small proportion in French barriques, results in a wine of multi-layered complexity and elegance.

Made from pure Sangiovese grapes from both the historic terraces around Castellina and the famous Conca d'Oro in Panzano, this wine epitomises the synthesis of two exceptional sites. The grapes ripen on soils rich in galestro between 350 and 450 metres above sea level, facing south-west, where the centuries-old dry stone walls – uNESCO World Heritage Site since 2019 – between vines, olive trees and roses create a unique microclimate. After temperature-controlled fermentation with indigenous yeasts and 20 days of maceration, the wine matures for ten months, half in French barriques and half in concrete tanks, followed by three months of bottle ageing.

“Badia a Passignano” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione S. Donato in Poggio DOCG 2021
High above Sambuca Val di Pesa, just three kilometres south of the famous Tenuta Tignanello, rises the venerable Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo – a bastion of faith since the 10th century, where Giovanni Gualberto, the founder of the Vallombrosan order, once lived and died. Here, where wine of exceptional quality was already appreciated around the year 1000, only the finest Sangiovese grapes thrive on calcareous soils with clay content at an altitude of 300 metres. The historical importance of this place is documented in hundreds of volumes in the Florentine state archives – centuries of Sangiovese cultivation and rural life, preserved for eternity.

“Vigneti La Selvanella” Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2021 · MAGNUM in OWC

!["San Lorenzo" Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Gaiole DOCG 2021]()
“San Lorenzo” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Gaiole DOCG 2021
As the Tuscan sun rises over the San Lorenzo Valley, it casts its golden light on the eighteen-year-old Pianigiani and Ricucci villas – the historic walls that gave this extraordinary Gran Selezione its name. It is a moment of silence before the story of a wine begins, which carries the quintessence of four legendary vineyards: Bellavista, Casuccia, San Lorenzo and Montebuoni. The 2021 vintage was a gift from nature to the winemakers of Chianti Classico. A rainy spring, which gave the vines the moisture they needed, was followed by a warm but not scorching summer. These climatic conditions gave the grapes a fullness and fleshiness that would later reveal itself in the glass as velvety opulence. Marco Pallanti, the driving force behind Castello di Ama since 1982 and former president of the Chianti Classico consortium, immediately recognised the extraordinary potential of this vintage.

Modern classic of rare precision
There are vintages that you admire. And there are those that you instinctively recognise as historic. The 2021 Chianti Classico is already being celebrated as a "modern classic", with some even describing it as a potential vintage of the century. After the structural clarity of 2019 and the juicy accessibility of 2020, 2021 combines both: aromatic brilliance, vibrant freshness and impressive concentration. A vintage that is powerful without ever being heavy. The Sangiovese shows itself here in a form that is both energetic and precise.
A year of excitement and substance
A frosty moment in April briefly made winegrowers sit up and take notice. This was followed by a dry, hot summer. However, the decisive factor was that the previous wet winter had left sufficient water reserves in the soil. September brought golden days and cool nights. It was precisely these temperature differences that created the basis for perfect phenolic ripeness with moderate alcohol. The result is wines with clear lines, dense fruit and remarkable freshness. The acidity is not sharp, but carrying. The tannins are present but fine-grained. 2021 has energy and calm at the same time.
JAMES SUCKLING | Pure Energy
James Suckling is euphoric and speaks of a "breathtaking purity". He emphasises the extraordinary energy of the vintage, the vibrant acidity and the crystal-clear definition of the fruit.
"The purity and focus of the 2021s are breathtaking." James Suckling
Many top wines achieve an incredible 97 to 99 points. For Suckling, 2021 is a vintage of exceptional precision and excitement.
THE WINE ADVOCATE | Strength & purity
Monica Larner emphasises the "strength and purity" of the vintage. Despite the summer drought, there is no trace of overripeness, but rather elegance and transparency.
"2021 captures both strength and remarkable purity." Monica Larner
The cool nights in September would have preserved structure and freshness. A particularly high proportion of Sangiovese produces a clear mineral line.
VINOUS | Texture and harmony
Antonio Galloni is one of the vintage's staunchest supporters. He speaks of an "extraordinary textural harmony and finesse".
"Many estates produced their best wines ever in 2021." Vinous
Richer than 2020, but more finely balanced. For Galloni, 2021 is a must-buy for collectors.
FALSTAFF, VINUM & DECANTER
Falstaff, Vinum and Decanter also join in the international enthusiasm. Falstaff rates numerous wines with 93 to 96 points and speaks of precise fruit, juicy structure and fine-grained tannins. Vinum awards up to 18 out of 20 points and describes a cool aristocracy despite the warm days. Decanter awards 2021 five out of five stars and calls it a highlight vintage, characterised by vitality and impressive structure. The consensus is remarkable: 2021 is considered an exceptional year.
UGA: Origin with contour
Rarely before have the differences between the UGAs been as clear as in 2021.
- Radda and Gaiole present themselves with taut minerality, linear tension and pronounced freshness.
- Castellina shows balance and clarity with a finely integrated structure.
- Panzano produces powerful, dense wines that are nevertheless characterised by astonishing precision.
2021 acts as a magnifying glass for origin. The differences are not loud, but precisely defined. That is precisely what makes this vintage so great.
Drinking maturity & Perspective
The Annata wines are already showing a fascinating tension, but will become even more harmonious in two to three years. Riserva and Gran Selezione have a Storage potential of 20 to 30 years. The balance of acidity, fruit and tannin gives them exceptional stability. A direct comparison often shows that 2019 is firmer and more robust. 2021, on the other hand, combines comparable power with an almost ethereal lightness and elegance.
Conclusion: Structure meets charm
Chianti Classico from the 2021 vintage combines the structural depth of 2019 with the accessible maturity of 2020. It is precise, full of energy and harmonious at the same time. A vintage that not only impresses, but sets standards. If 2019 is the classic reference vintage and 2020 the vintage of early joy, then 2021 stands for perfection and balance.
