    Riesling (Riesing renano, not Riesling italico) is regarded as the soul of Northern Europe – moselle, Rhine, Alsace. The fact that it finds a completely unique voice in the hills of Trentino is down to two men who started out in Faedo in 1975, and two soils that could hardly be more different. In Cembra, Maso Besleri, Località Val Bona, the vines grow on volcanic porphyry – —dark, grainy, rich in rounded pebbles. The slopes have a gradient of up to 50 per cent: heroic in every respect, Guyot training, 6,000 vines per hectare. In Faedo, Località Palai, the soil is the exact opposite: limestone and dolomite of marine origin, sedimentary, light in colour and providing structure.

    The vineyards are situated at altitudes of between 350 and 750 metres. The grapes from both sites are vinified together, strictly in accordance with the winery’s philosophy: grape washing, pressing in a controlled atmosphere, and no antioxidants. The wine is left to mature on the lees in small acacia wood barrels – neutral, without any woody aroma, but with the oxygen permeability that Riesling needs for its development.

    Straw-yellow with green highlights. The bouquet is youthful: peach, apricot, white flowers. With time: the characteristic tertiary hydrocarbon notes – that fascinating petrol-like tang that only Riesling knows and loves. On the palate, it is vertical, mineral and long. Faedo speaks the language of Rhine Riesling – but with an unmistakable Trentino accent. SUPERIORE.DE
