There are houses that ask themselves a single question. Not: What else can we do? But rather: How well can we do one thing? Galardi, at the foot of the extinct Roccamonfina volcano in northern Campania, has been producing exactly one wine since 1994. Just one. Year after year. The location is exceptional: south-west exposure at 500 metres, volcanic soil of silt, clay and rock, rich in mineral salts from two eras of volcanic activity – leucite lava and basalt, superimposed and weathered over hundreds of thousands of years. Chestnut woods, olive groves, underground springs that never dry up, even in dry years. The sea breezes from the Gulf of Gaeta provide natural climate control. 80% Aglianico, 20% Piedirosso – the legitimate natives of this region. Fermentation with skin contact for 20 days, pumping over twice daily, malolactic fermentation in steel, twelve months ageing in French barriques (40% new, 60% second and third passage), then a further twelve months in bottle.

2021 was not an easy year at Roccamonfina. The humidity was the invisible enemy from January to October – no extremes, no disasters, but permanent vigilance. And then, as the harvest approached, the rains came. harvest at the end of September and beginning of October between two thunderstorm fronts. The result is small quantities and grapes that have found themselves under this pressure. An impenetrable deep ruby red colour in the glass. The nose opens with dark red berries and balsamic undergrowth, the volcanic aromas characteristic of wet vintages – graphite, leather, eucalyptus, liquorice. "The Terra di Lavoro 2021 is intense and yet youthfully backward. It exudes a complex aroma of dried violets, ashen stones, sage, cedar shavings and blackberries, lifted by a hint of camphor. It's silky smooth, almost seamless on the palate, with surprising lift and a savoury core of red and black fruits that penetrate deeply and stain the palate with primary concentration. A touch of lively acidity maintains freshness, but the end result is characterised by tannic structure and tension. Deep, bitter berry fruit and liquorice tones leave a sensation that presses against the cheek. The 2021 is a powerful and dense Terra di Lavoro that will pay off in the cellar.
