Serpico is Feudi di San Gregorio's flagship wine – a grand, monumental Aglianico made from vines over 150 years old, grown in the legendary single vineyard "Dal Re" in Sorbo Serpico. The vineyard is situated on mineral soils of volcanic origin and is cultivated with great care by hand. 2016 was a year of moderate conditions, with a cool spring, a perfect ripening period in late summer and a late, selective harvest in October – ideal conditions for a wine of depth and balance.

In the glass, Serpico displays a dark, impenetrable ruby red with garnet-red glints. The nose is complex and challenging: dark sour cherry, plum, tar, violet, black olive, graphite, juniper, cedar and a hint of mocha unfold in layers and with great precision. On the palate, it is powerful yet silky, supported by ripe, grainy tannins, impressive freshness and a distinct, mineral vein. The long ageing in French barriques lends structure and depth without overpowering the terroir.

"In its youth, the Serpico is still very reserved and currently displays more oaky influences than fruit, with notes of cocoa, rosemary, cedarwood shavings and cloves filling the senses. The intensity builds rapidly with tart black fruits and salty mineral notes, whilst a hint of dark chocolate emerges towards the finish.
