Serpico is the flagship of Feudi di San Gregorio – a large, monumental Aglianico from vines over 150 years old from the legendary single vineyard "Dal Re" in Sorbo Serpico. The vineyard is located on mineral soils of volcanic origin and is cultivated with painstaking manual labour. 2016 was a moderate year, with a cool spring, a perfect ripening phase in late summer and a late, selective harvest in October – ideal conditions for a wine with depth and balance.

In the glass, Serpico has a dark, impenetrable ruby red colour with a garnet-red hue. The nose is complex and demanding: dark sour cherry, plum, tar, violets, black olive, graphite, juniper, cedar and a hint of mocha unfold with great precision and complexity. Powerful yet silky on the palate, carried by ripe, grainy tannins, impressive freshness and a clear mineral vein. The long ageing in French barriques lends structure and depth without overpowering the terroir.

"The 2018 Irpinia Aglianico Serpico is richly concentrated and texturally bold. Ripe fruit flavors, dark marmalade and sweet spice play prominent roles. This expression is quite impactful, so make your food-pairing choices accordingly. There is a spot of freshness and varietal bitterness that build up the wine's mouthfeel in terms of structure and persistence. The oak dosing is evident but well balanced.
