“Riparosso” Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC 2021
The rugged, red-tinged rocky landscape of Ripe in the immediate vicinity of the vineyards gave its name to the Riparosso. Its intense bouquet of delicately fresh character is beguiling, the velvety and mild taste absolutely seductive. SUPERIORE.DE
"Marasca cherry, licorice root, mint and fennel. The mid-palate, ferruginous and mid-weighted, in the most savory and meaty sense. This is one of those wines, inimitably Italian by virtue of its dry structural focus, that just needs a few years. Not too much time. Just a modicum of patience. Stay the path." James Suckling
"A sweet blend of violets and lavender gives way to crushed blackberries and chalk dust lifts from the 2021 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Riparosso. It washes across the palate with soft textures and ripe wild berry fruits that are neatly contrasted by sour citrus toward the close. This finishes perfumed and with admirable length, leaving a coating of dusty tannins that tug at the cheeks. Nicely done." Vinous

"Spiced black cherries, cloves and camphor introduce the 2021 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. It smooths over the palate with juicy red fruits and sweet spices propelled by vibrant acidity. Deep red colour, fascinating complex aroma spectrum on the nose. Dominated by the ripe berry scent, with hints of plums and tobacco. Powerful and intense on the palate, rich in extract, with juicy soft tannins. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2020 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Ilico opens with a burst of crushed blackberries, underbrush and ashen stone. It's silky-smooth with polished red fruits that form beneath an air of inner violet florals. This finishes long and staining yet only lightly structured with a bump of residual acidity that maintains a lovely balance." Vinous

Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC 2021
Deep ruby red colour with a violet hue. Clean, intense and persistent on the nose, with notes of red fruits, blackberries and sour cherries. Full and fruity on the palate, with notes of tobacco and liquorice on the finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"Dark and tangy, with a lush core of blackberry, mulberry and boysenberry fruit flavors, revealing accents of oolong tea leaf and spiced orange peel. Shows taut, fine tannins that impart a tightly meshed feel, but this is silky and balanced overall, opening nicely on the palate and in the glass." Wine Spectator

“Piancarda” Rosso Conero DOC 2020
Rosso Piancarda is intensely flavoured and perfumed, with medicinal cherries and raspberries complemented by dusty roses and sweet cedar wood notes. On the palate, Piancarda turns to the savoury spectrum. Salty and full of savoury minerality, it shows spicy red fruits, a hint of plum and a lively acidity that keeps the expression fresh. The grippy tannins remain until the final, while the notes of sour citrus fruits and tart berries slowly fade away. SUPERIORE.DE
"Shimmering ruby red colour with a deep dark core. Juicy plums on the nose, with a hint of ginger and a slightly animal note. Grippy and savoury on the palate, with dense tannins, lush fruit and a pleasantly juicy final." Falstaff
"The 2020 Rosso Conero Piancarda, a Montepulciano grape variety, rises from the glass with a dusty mix of dried roses, redcurrants and a hint of nectarine, creating a truly inviting bouquet. The wine is silky and elegant, almost creamy, yet sublime and cool, with mineral forest berries and a saline note adding a savoury touch towards the end. The 2020 leaves a layer of fine tannins as inner flowers arch across the palate and a minerality slowly fades. The warm vintage has given this wine a particularly soft character, but the structure and acidity of the Piancarda are beautifully balanced and should favour medium-term cellaring. Put a few bottles in the cellar, you'll thank me later. " Vinous

“Spelt” Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo Superiore DOC 2022 (BIO)
Rich, full-bodied and typical of the variety, Spelt Rosato has an intense aroma and a fruity, dry flavour, a slender acid wire and a clear, energetic, full-bodied final. SUPERIORE.DE
"The nose is fresh yet salty, as notes of watermelon and cherry are balanced by subtle undertones of tar and leather. The fruit notes define the palate, but plentiful acid and prominent tannins emphasize the saltiness to maintain balance." Wine Enthusiast
"The Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo Superiore Spelt 2022 is a deep red wine with orange-coloured reflections. It opens in the glass with a bouquet of sweet spices, rose petals and dusty dried cherries. It feels silky, almost heavy, with a nervous acidity that balances a cascade of ripe strawberries and candied citrus, stimulating the senses with savoury tension. The 2022 finishes with dramatic length, showing a forgivable hint of spiciness as red liquorice notes linger. This is a powerful interpretation of Cerasuolo Spelt, but one that is very balanced." Vinous
"Sparkling, intense cherry pink colour. A nose of beetroot, carrots and fresh cherries, paired with fine salty and earthy tones. Beautiful juiciness on the palate, well-integrated, albeit noticeable tannins, savoury fruit with considerable length. A great accompaniment to food." Falstaff
"Deep cherry red in colour. Wonderful aromas of raspberries and red cherries pour from the glass. Very inviting. Medium body with a super fresh raspberry flavour, spiced up with additional notes of blood orange and aniseed. Crisp and very flavoursome finish. Excellent summer fare and not just as an aperitif. Top Italian rosé made from selected Montepulciano d'Abruzzo grapes." James Suckling

“Spelt” Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Riserva DOC 2020
Deep dark Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Riserva with a beguiling aroma of dark red cherries and berries, earthy notes, grilled hazelnuts, spices and liquorice. "A mouthful of wine" in an incredibly appealing style. Spelt has remarkable concentration and outstanding length. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright ruby red colour. Nose of graphite, ripe cherries, wild berries, a hint of dried rose petal and rubber. Clear on the palate, with clear fruit and beautiful juiciness, shows compact tannins, drinks even better slightly chilled." Falstaff
"The 2020 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Riserva Spelt is dark and earthy in the glass, with undergrowth and crushed stones giving way to black cherries and spice. This is round and silky in feel, with ripe wild berry fruits and spices that cascade throughout. Plum and medicinal blackberry linger as the 2020 tapers off long, lightly structured, yet relatively fresh. Well done." Vinous
"Very cedary on the nose at first, so give it a swirl to allow the rich red fruit and floral notes to give you a proper introduction to this full-bodied and solid red. The cedary element is present throughout, but there’s plenty of fruit to counter it. Firm tannins kick in midway and give some astringency to finish, which will smoothen with some more time in bottle." James Suckling

“Grosso Agontano” Rosso Conero Riserva DOCG 2020
Grosso Agontano Riserva rises dark, floral and earthy from the glass, with notes of undergrowth and tobacco that fade into blackberry and gravel. Its velvety texture leads to a sophisticated presentation of red and black fruits, underpinned by cool herbal notes, while the fine tannins slowly saturate towards the end. The finish is long, youthfully structured and with a pleasant inner sweetness, while nuances of tangerine and sour cherry linger under a hint of violet blossom.
Agontano is a 100% Montepulciano that is refined in barriques in the second passage. It is a very attractive interpretation of the grape variety and still needs some time in the cellar to show its best side. SUPERIORE.DE

"Strong ruby red with light violet reflections. Rich nose with notes of sour cherry, blackberry jam, liquorice and Mediterranean maquis. Soft, supple and balanced on the palate between freshness, juiciness and well-integrated tannins." Falstaff
"The 2018 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Centovie rises from the glass with a wild and exotic blend of crushed rose petals, sweet herbs, wet stone and strawberries. It fills the palate with a soft, almost fleshy texture held together by a lively acidity that enlivens the tart wild berries within. The 2018 is long-lasting, just lightly textured with a hint of sour citrus that contrasts nicely." Vinous
"This is an organic wine whose fruit comes exclusively from the Umani Ronchi vineyards. The 2018 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Centovie represents some of the fruit from two hills facing each other. The wine shows beautiful dark fruit and rich concentration with soft layers of black cherry, plum, spice and leather. The 2018 vintage offers plenty of freshness to cleanse the palate." Wine Advocate

“Adrano” Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Colline Teramane DOCG 2015
Medoro's famous top-quality Montepulciano Adrano, which elegantly and typically spreads a fine fruity aroma. The taste is led by a rich fruit that is excellently embedded in a full, deliciously spicy structure. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2015 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Adrano lifts up with an alluring display of crushed black cherries, sweet spices, violet florals and a hint of vanilla bean. This is silky and elegant in texture, contrasted by brisk acids and balsamic-tinged black fruits. Fine tannins linger, framing the expression nicely as the Adrano finishes savory with tart wild berries and minerals." Vinous
"The Villa Medoro 2015 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Colline Teramane Adrano shows a classic aromatic profile with dark fruit tones followed by leather and mild tobacco. This wine ages in oak for 12 months, and the impact of that wood emerges mostly in terms of the rich and slightly dense texture of the mouthfeel. Those contrasts between dark fruit and oak spice are nicely played, and they are perfectly suited to a rib-eye steak." Wine Advocate

Montepulciano is a high-yielding, medium-bodied red grape variety from Abruzzo, whose wines are far too often associated with the widespread reputation of being cheap, pizza-friendly red wines. Some hastily label it as a boring mass-produced wine, when in fact the variety produces anything but watered-down wines for the table. The grapes produce attractive all-rounders whose quality has increased enormously in recent years, which also explains why Montepulciano has finally disappeared from most supermarket shelves.
In Italy, an incredible 34,824 hectares of vineyards are planted with Montepulciano, most of which are in the native Abruzzo, the Marche and the wine region of Molise, but more on that later. Unfortunately, people often confuse its wines with Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, the official name for a Sangiovese produced in the Tuscan town of the same name, Montepulciano, but which actually has nothing to do with the grape variety itself.
The reason to prefer a bottle of Montepulciano to another red wine is not only its wonderful aroma of pickled black cherries, raspberries and plums, because with more maturity, notes of liquorice, leather and tobacco also develop. But its harmonious structure is what really makes this wine popular. The taut acidity balances out the alcohol content and the grippy tannins are not at all obtrusive. Most of the time, it is clearly more fruity than floral, so you can never really make the wrong choice with this red wine.
Some winegrowers who have proven the aromatic potential of this grape variety cultivate the vines between the sandy beaches of the Adriatic and on the foothills of the Apennines. In the heart of the Abruzzo wine-growing region, this late-ripening grape variety produces the famous Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC (varietal percentage at least 85%) and the no less interesting Controguerra Rosso DOC (varietal percentage at least 60%). One of the most renowned wine-growing areas, however, is in the wild hills around the town of Teramano. Stricter production regulations apply in these vineyards, producing the top category, the corpulent yet elegant Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Colline Teramane DOCG. After maturing for at least two years, this wine is considered the powerhouse of the region's Montepulciano wines, with a varietal content of at least 90%.
As already mentioned, the grape variety is also found in the Marche, where winemakers produce maritime interpretations with a refined, juicy and refreshing fruitiness. For this purpose, Montepulciano wines Rosso Conero DOC (at least 85%) and Rosso Piceno DOC (at least 35-85%) are usually blended with Sangiovese.
The grape variety is also suitable for the production of rosé wines: The Abruzzese also press the fruity rosé Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo from their Montepulciano, whose wine name can be traced back to the dialect word "cerese" (cherries) and its fruity aroma.
The small wine-growing region of Molise is again full of strength and tannins. The Rosso Biferno DOC wine-growing zone, which covers the coastal area and a small inland part of the province of Campobasso, is particularly worth mentioning. Here, Montepulciano meets 20-30% Aglianico grapes and although this grape variety can also be found elsewhere, the versions from the eastern coast of central Italy are certainly among the most brilliant wines of the country.
