Ridolfo, son of Geremia, progenitor of the Firidolfi branch – marco Ricasoli-Firidolfi is the 37th generation of this family, which has been cultivating the same hills in Gaiole in Chianti since the Lombard era. The wine bears his name. And like its namesake, it is not a founder, but a continuator – consistent, independent, with its own character. 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 50% Pugnitello: a combination that Marco himself described as surprising. The Pugnitello, indigenous and almost extinct in the 1980s, gives wild fruit, pepper and earthiness. The Cabernet gives structure and depth. Certified organic, hand-picked, fermentation in upright wooden tanks with wild yeasts, 24 months in Allier barriques and tonneau, 36 months bottle ageing. Magnum, hand-numbered, only in outstanding vintages.

Autumn 2018 began with bad press. After the glowing vintages of 2015, 2016 and the tough 2017 came a cool, rainy year – and the experts shrugged their shoulders. But if you listened carefully, you could hear something subtle: elegance. The quiet kind. The kind you don't immediately recognise. San Filippo lies east of Montalcino, at 260 to 280 metres above sea level, in a gently north-east facing hollow. Here, the vines grow in red clay over limestone and slate – soils that absorb heat and retain freshness. 2018 was not a year for muscles. But for nerves. Fermentation in steel and concrete, ageing in large wooden barrels – paolo Caciorgna keeps his hand steady. No wood that drowns out. No intervention to correct. The wine should speak.

A few years ago, Pio Boffa, who has unfortunately passed away in the meantime, bought himself a "small" present for his 60th birthday. Not a new set of golf clubs, a picture hanging in the hall, a holiday for him and the family. No. Just a vineyard called Mosconi in Monforte d'Alba, a region of Piedmont where four generations of the Pio Cesare dynasty never gained a foothold. Originally, the grapes from the 10-hectare vineyard were to enhance the quality of his classic Barolo, but after the first barrel samples, it was unmistakably clear to Pio Boffa that this would be at least an equal - if stylistically different - counterpart to the hitherto undisputed flagship Ornato.

A study commissioned by Francesco Ricasoli has shown that there are 19 different types of soil on Brolio. This made it possible to precisely define the sites that are particularly good for Merlot, from which wines with a unique structure and unmistakable flavour emerge. With the 2018 vintage, Francesco Ricasoli is now presenting the "new" Casalferro, whose grapes come from the three different vineyards Vigna Casalferro, Vigna Pecchierino and Vigna Sodacci. The production volume has been drastically reduced, but the result is impressive!

The Ciabot Mentin vineyard is located in the Ginestra area and represents the uppermost part of the hill, whose fruit is planted at 410 metres above sea level. This vineyard was planted in 1978. Like the other Clerico Baroli, it matures both in barriques (eight months) and in the bottle (one year). Ciabot Mentin opens with fleshy, floral aromas of lilac and dried lavender that give way to wild berries, cherries and candied orange peel. There is virtually none of the tar or asphalt-like tones often found in Nebbiolo here. Instead, the wine reveals bright primary fruits and a delicate, ethereal complexity. Barolo Cerretta Vigna Bricco Riserva 2018 comes from an exposed, high-altitude parcel in Serralunga d'Alba. The soils here are characterised by calcareous marl with iron- and manganese-rich inclusions, which give the wine an unmistakable, cool radiance and distinctive tannin structure. The south-east orientation ensures even sunshine, while cool night winds preserve the aromatic precision of the grapes. The 2018 vintage was characterised by a mild spring, followed by a warm but not extremely hot summer, which allowed the Nebbiolo to ripen gently and evenly. The harvest was not carried out until October, selectively and by hand, in order to bring in only perfectly ripe harvest. The wine was matured for 30 months in barriques, a small proportion of which were new, followed by several years of ageing in the bottle, as required by the Riserva status.

"This is probably not ONE Valpolicella, but THE Valpolicella", wrote one critic about this wine – and hit the nail on the head. Giuseppe Quintarelli has created a monument from a DOC that was often dismissed as a light everyday wine. His method is radical: half of the grapes – corvina, Rondinella and Corvinone grapes from the vineyards in Negrar – in wooden crates for two months, as with Amarone. The other half is processed fresh. After the harvest, a three-day maceration with wild yeasts takes place, then the wine rests on the fine lees and undergoes a second fermentation. What follows is a patience that seems almost forgotten today: six years of ageing in large Slavonian oak barrels. Quintarelli only releases his wines when they are truly ready – never before.

Gentle pressing with 3 days of skin contact, followed by 12 months of fermentation in tonneau and a further 15 months on the fine lees in stainless steel tanks give it a unique depth and finesse. Luca Roagna has planted Chardonnay here, not far from the new winery – a statement of freedom in the midst of tradition. 80% Chardonnay and 20% white Nebbiolo make up the cuvée in the 2023. The vinification follows old European principles: Pre-fermentative oxidation, then spontaneous fermentation in wooden vats with the vineyard's own yeasts for ten days. Matured for two years on the fine lees in neutral oak – without any racking.

Barolo Dagromis bears its name in memory of the family that once owned and cultivated these vineyards in the 19th century – a symbol of the combination of history and modern vision that is at home at Gaja. Today, this wine is a stylistic bridge: Nebbiolo grapes from the legendary La Morra and Serralunga vineyards are vinified separately, matured first for a year in barriques and then for a further year in large oak barrels – a deliberate blend of finesse and substance.
