There are wines that speak not only of soil, climate and grapes – they also speak of light and space. Vistamare is undoubtedly one of these rare creations. Named after the sweeping view of the sea that can be seen from Bolgheri on clear days, this wine is a Mediterranean promise, fulfilled with the care and elegance with which Angelo Gaja has been setting standards for decades – only this time not in Piedmont, but on the Tuscan coast. The grapes are harvested plot by plot and deliberately staggered: Vermentino, Viognier and Fiano from coastal vineyards on sandy alluvial soil, in small batches that were vinified separately and then blended to create the final cuvée.

In the glass, the wine glows a pale gold with greenish highlights. The nose is delicate yet complex: white blossoms, ripe lemon, nectarine, a hint of sage and a subtle suggestion of a salty breeze – almost more of an atmosphere than a bouquet. Ageing in stainless steel lends it lightness, whilst brief contact with the fine lees adds depth. On the palate, Vistamare feels like a wave rolling in gently: cool at first, then velvety, and finally with a hint of maritime spice. The fruit remains consistently understated, almost ethereal. What lingers is texture, freshness and a subtle minerality reminiscent of crushed mussel shells. The alcohol is perfectly integrated, the acidity delicate, and the finish clean and linear. 

Vistamare is not a white wine that imposes itself. It tells the story of Bolgheri with the voice of a summer's day that was not hot, but vast. Of a glass on the terrace, in which you cannot see the sea, but can taste it. Vistamare is a cool hand on your forehead on a warm day. And a white wine that thrives on stillness, light and space.
