How early is too early? This question was the starting point for "PRE CHA XXIII" – a radically early harvested Chardonnay from a promising top site that could be considered for the Löwengang selection in the future. The vines grow on old pergolas over dolomite rubble, an exposure with character. The grapes were harvested on 17 August – a deliberate attempt to push the ideal of freshness and precision even further. Some of the grapes were fermented spontaneously on the skins as whole bunches, around 20% of the total volume. The remainder was gently pressed after a short maceration period. After fermentation, the wine was blended back with the pressed wine from the whole bunch – a decision that intensified both structure and expression. The wine then matured unfiltered for 16 months in used tonneaux on the coarse lees.

Brilliant golden yellow in the glass with a light haze. Delicate notes of white peach, lemon zest and candied grapefruit on the nose, underpinned by floral nuances, fresh almond skin, ginger and a hint of wet stone. The palate is incredibly light-footed and taut at the same time – with only 9.5% alcohol, this Chardonnay shows that depth and expression do not have to be a question of strength. The acidity is lively, the texture fine and herbaceous, the finish clear, salty and subtly spicy. "Pre Cha XXIII" is not a classic Chardonnay, but a deliberately different tone in Lageder's polyphonic repertoire. A wine that explores the boundaries between philosophy, experimentation and terroir-driven elegance – uncompromising, lively and with a clear signature.
