Milo is the only municipality on the entire slopes of Mount Etna whose white wines are permitted to bear the suffix ‘superiore’. This distinction was enshrined in the DOC regulations in 1968 – and which takes account of the microclimate of this eastern flank: twice the rainfall compared to the northern side, an eastern exposure towards the Ionian Sea, cooling sea breezes, and volcanic soils composed of ash and Ripiddu lapilli. Amidst the mists of the summer nights that Marco de Grazia describes in his writings on Milo, the Carricante grape ripens here to a level of precision it achieves nowhere else on the volcano.

The Contrada Caselle is one of the eight historic single vineyards in the municipality – , situated at an altitude of 750 to 800 metres, on the eastern side, on deep volcanic soil. What Marco de Grazia says about Milo – "a wine that is sharp, slender, tart and aristocratic" – is true here in its purest form. The latest addition to the Le Vigne Niche series, the heart of Terre Nere’s single-vineyard philosophy. 100% Carricante from old Alberello vines. Short cold maceration, gentle pressing. Fermentation in small French oak barrels, ageing in stainless steel.

Bright straw yellow. Clear and mineral on the nose – citrus, white flowers, a hint of iodine and flint. On the palate, razor-sharp freshness and salty minerality, with a long, cool, almost endless final. Superiore – – the name and the promise of Milo. SUPERIORE.DE
