The vines thrive on barren limestone soil between gently rolling hills at an altitude of 450–750 metres above sea level. Bright ruby red in colour with a violet hue. The bouquet is charming and open: Ripe blackberry, white pepper and violet accents mingle with a delicate undertone of damp lava stones. The whole is fresh and earthy at the same time. On the palate, Lamuri dances between fullness and elegance: the fruit is juicy, not overloaded, underpinned by a crisp acidity that supports the body. Zisola is the Tuscan dream of the Mazzei family in the south of Sicily. The winery's bestseller is made from 100% Nero d'Avola from traditional Alberello vines near Noto, where chalky soils and proximity to the sea balance the natural exuberance of this indigenous grape variety with freshness and elegance. The Marchesi Mazzei, one of Italy's most historic winegrowing families with over 600 years of tradition, have been continuing their Sicilian project since 2003. 24 hectares of vineyards surround the historic bagli of the 50-hectare tenuta with a view of the baroque UNESCO World Heritage Site of Noto. Hand-picked and fermented for 14-16 days at 26-28°C, the wine matures for 10 months in French oak barrels (33% new).

As an introduction to the world of Gulfi, Rossojbleo is a restrained Nero d'Avola full of character. The grapes come from organic farming in the heart of southern Sicily – very close to Noto and Ragusa, on ancient hills characterised by limestone and clay soils. Here, deep origin and precise acidity combine to create a charming red wine full of transparency. Ruby in colour with delicate violet reflections. The aromatic freshness attracts the nose with red sour and wild berries, subtle herbal notes and a mineral flavour. Convincing on the palate with its balanced proportions: Juicy fruit, lively acidity, light spice and delicate, soft tannins – everything seems light as a feather, but the flavour is clear and harmonious. Saia is the pride and joy of Feudo Maccari – a Nero d'Avola from old bush vines rooted in the barren, chalky soils around Noto. The name refers to the ancient Arab irrigation channels of Sicily – a symbol of lifelines in a sun-scorched landscape. This wine is also an expression of origin, patience and resilience: a Nero d'Avola that could hardly be more purist and powerful. The vines are on average 35 to 45 years old and are trained in Alberello, which reduces yields but maximises concentration and depth. After selective manual harvesting, fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature in steel, after which the wine matures for twelve months in French barriques. This careful vinification preserves the balance between structure, maturity and freshness.

The Inghams came to Sicily in pairs. Benjamin first – in 1806, with the instinct of an entrepreneur. Then, in 1819, his uncle Joseph followed: not to inherit, but to help, to build, to expand. Together they created a trading empire that Marsala shipped all over the world with their fleet. Pellegrino remembers them both – "BIP" for Benjamin, "Uncle Joseph" for the uncle who came when he was needed. And the wine? An outsider among the Marsala types – and that's exactly what makes it interesting. 100% Nero d'Avola, from loamy soils in the Trapesi countryside around Mazara del Vallo, harvested in the second decade of September when fully ripe. Cold maceration, then fermentation stopped with an acquavite matured in oak for at least five years – the depth begins here. 24 months of ageing in French Allier oak barrels give the Rubino structure and that velvety texture that makes Nero d'Avola so unmistakable.

The name, inspired by an intoxicating celebration, is a reference to the untamed vitality of Nero d'Avola, which presents itself here as a powerful yet highly charming greatness. The summer of 2020 in Sicily was an interesting balancing act between summer heat and evening freshness, with the grapes ripening with clear depth and lively structure.

The black one from Avola. Avola is a small town near the famous excavations of Syracuse, in the southeast of Sicily. Nero simply means black. Nero d'Avola is a very old autochthonous grape variety. First mentions as "Calaurisi", which refer to the same small town in the Sicilian dialect, already existed in the 17th century. Nevertheless, little is known about this demanding grape variety to this day. For decades it served mainly as a blending partner to enhance other Italian and also French red wines, to make them darker and more full-bodied. Only when autochthonous grape varieties became modern again, Nero d'Avola was filled again under his name - and blended with international varieties, which had previously been planted in large quantities in Sicily. The result was a wine that could be found in almost every supermarket for little money. But in rather sad mass-produced quality.
Only a few years ago, oenologists at the top Sicilian wineries recognized the potential that was slumbering there and began to make the black wine from Avola what it could have always been. To the showcase red wine of the island. Since then, there is hardly a well-known Sicilian winery that does not have an excellent Nero d'Avola in its assortment. The international success is downright uncanny, the awards in all guides and magazines prove it. And - with the Nero d'Avola, the renaissance of autochthonous grape varieties began.
To this day, no ancestry has been proven. The grape variety probably comes from Sicily, possibly also from Calabria, because some of the old synonyms have "Calabrese" as a component. However, there is also the opinion that this Calabrese is the Italian interpretation of the Sicilian dialect word "Calaurisi", which in turn means "the grape coming from Avola".
Nero d'Avola matures relatively late, but is extremely resistant to heat and drought. He loves the warmth. Therefore, it is usually kept low to have the grapes hanging close to the ground. Many vineyards are even planted in the old Albarello-Reberziehung (also Gobelet- or single stock-education), which can be cultivated only laboriously. Nero d'Avola produces deep dark, tannin-rich and full-bodied red wines, which nevertheless do not lack natural acidity and therefore always present themselves quite fresh, which one would hardly expect with such a dark wine from Sicily. The scent is balsamic and spicy, dark berry, often with a touch of cedar or leather. Juicy on the palate with hints of plums, elderberries and blackberries. High-quality Nero d'Avola also have several years of maturing potential. In short: an autochthonous Sicilian for lovers of powerful red wines.
With over 20,000 hectares of vineyards, Nero d'Avola is widespread in Sicily and is approved in several DOC and DOCG wines. With the renaissance of the variety, it was also cultivated more often in Calabria. Tendency rising. SUPERIORE.DE
