At the southern foot of the Margreider Schuttkegel, a vineyard with the dialect name "Punggl" spreads out, which has been known and sought after for winegrowing since time immemorial. In the mid-1950s, the former owners of Ansitz Hirschprunn had planted a vineyard there with Merlot, as it had already produced very good results in the decades before. In 1995, the grapes from this vineyard proved to be of such first-class quality that they inspired Luis von Dellemann, the Oenologistin charge at the time, to vinify these grapes as a single-vineyard wine – this strictly selected grape material has formed the basis for the MCM since then and only in the best years.

A study commissioned by Francesco Ricasoli has shown that there are 19 different types of soil on Brolio. This made it possible to precisely define the sites that are particularly good for Merlot, from which wines with a unique structure and unmistakable flavour emerge. With the 2018 vintage, Francesco Ricasoli is now presenting the "new" Casalferro, whose grapes come from the three different vineyards Vigna Casalferro, Vigna Pecchierino and Vigna Sodacci. The production volume has been drastically reduced, but the result is impressive!

This first vintage of the full-bodied Supertoscan is named after the founding year of the winery. It is the first red wine that the famous Oenologist Riccardo Cotarella has been responsible for since joining Il Palagio and will henceforth be the winery's top flagship. The Merlot and Sangiovese grapes come from several small vineyard sites in the provinces of Florence and Siena, at an altitude of up to 1,000 metres above sea level on soils of sand and clay. The Merlot is aged in small French oak barrels and the Sangiovese in 25 hl tonneaux. Intense aromas of cherries, raspberries, some wood and spices. Also from Bruttrio, like the Friulano Buri Bellaria, comes the almost pure top Merlot from the Palazzolo family. The vines of the vineyard, which was formerly cultivated by Miani, are almost 100 years old and regularly produce grapes of great complexity and very fine tannins, which, however, require at least two years of ageing and refinement before the wine is bottled unfiltered. But then the wine embarks on a journey that could not be more exciting and rewarding. On the nose, we find violet flowers and lots of blue and black berries, rounded off with savoury herbs and spices. A remarkably silky, almost floating red that leads into a never-ending, fusiose final with fleshy berries, minerals and herbs. SUPERIORE.DE

Merlots of this quality are really only known from central Tuscany. And when one of the best Brunello producers cultivates a small parcel of Merlot and does not bottle a single-varietal Supertuscan just for fun, one has to be more than alert. The serious experiment has paid off: Joanni is a rich and multilayered red wine that offers aromas of currants and blackberries with hints of dark chocolate and vanilla beans. With further aeration, dark plums, blueberry pie, dark spices and vanilla reveal themselves. It is full-bodied and juicy - yet never overloaded - with tangy acidity, round tannins and a flavourful, very buoyant finish. Wow, we can hardly wait for further bottle ageing ... SUPERIORE.DE

The name Tresette is derived from the fact that only 2,800 bottles of this single-varietal Merlot are produced each year and it is aged in three Liters French oak barrels. The grapes come from old vines on a plot 480 metres above sea level, and it is only vinified in the best years. Tresette is a cool, archetypal Merlot that is very elegant and unique in Tuscany and is entirely in keeping with the house style. Juicy blackberry flavours, clove, herbs and spices on the nose. A wine with sheer exuberant elements, but nevertheless very coherent in its entirety. The pure Merlot Pàtrimo fascinates with its dense ruby red colour, which almost tends to black and yet shows itself clearly. "I tasted this wine twice over the course of six months, in advance of its commercial release. The 2016 Pàtrimo is quite a wine and needs all the extra bottle time it can get. Indeed, I would suggest putting it at the back of your cellar for another 5 years (at least). It opens to a black and impenetrable appearance. This is an elaborate and beautifully constructed wine that is put together piece by piece like a jigsaw puzzle. When viewed as a whole, all those tiny pieces create a beautiful portrait of a grape as the protagonist and of a region as its context. The wine is large in scope, with power and richness that need to be considered when pairing this wine with food. You might go with breaded veal chops or porchetta stuffed with fennel.
