When you say Braida, you mean Barbera. Ever since Giacomo Bologna proved in the 1980s that this underestimated grape variety can reach barrique maturity and world class, the name has been synonymous with the Piedmontese red wine revolution. Connoisseurs know that the family also produces white wines – but La Regina, Re di Fiori and the Asso di Fiori are deliberately labelled differently: Serra dei Fiori. This is the name of the vineyard near Trezzo Tinella in the Langhe, which the Bolognas acquired together with the Giacosa brothers in 1988. A separate terroir, a joint venture, a separate project. This makes what Giuseppe and Raffaella Bologna now dare to do all the more significant: the first white wine to bear the name Braida. Vinified not in the Langhe, but in the historic cellar of Rocchetta Tanaro – the heart of the estate. The grapes come from the Colli Tortonesi, the hills east of Alessandria, where the Timorasso has been rooted since the Middle Ages and was saved from extinction thanks to pioneers like Walter Massa.

On the palate, the wine impresses with round volume, pithy tannins and powerful fruit, integrated into a fascinating minerality. The ageing in barriques gives it depth, structure and a balanced, full-bodied expression. Cecubo is a red wine with expressiveness – full of history, with Campanian temperament, but also full of subtle minerality and a terrificfinish. Since the 2022 vintage, Campanaro has proudly carried the designation Fiano di Avellino Riserva DOCG – a step that takes the years of work on this wine to a new dimension. What began as Irpinia Bianco DOC with a Fiano-Greco cuvée is now a single-varietal Fiano from the best vineyards in the DOCG zone. Feudi di San Gregorio has thus made a clear decision: The Campanaro should show the potential of a single, great Campanian grape variety, not the harmony of two grapes. Vinification takes place in tonneau, where the must ferments at a controlled temperature and then matures for six months on the fine lees. This time in small wooden barrels gives the wine the texture and complexity that distinguishes it from simpler Fiano versions. The fine lees are stirred regularly to develop a creamy fullness without masking the typical freshness of Fiano. After bottling, the Campanaro is left to mature in the bottle for a few months before being released onto the market – patience as part of the Riserva philosophy.

With the name Shardana, Cantina Santadi builds a bridge from the past to the present. The wine symbolises the island's ancient, proud identity: unshakeable, powerful, full of character. It is no coincidence that the Carignano – a grape variety with deep roots in the south of the island – takes centre stage here. A wine like a Sardinian epic: Pentima bears the name of its place of origin, a tiny spot in the Surrau Valley, and also the soul of past generations. This Riserva is a broodinghomage to the terroir that has an impact far beyond the borders of Gallura. The 2021 vintage had long periods of sunshine with cool sea nights – ripening was therefore intense but never overheated. The grapes were harvested late and, as always, selectively, allowing them to ripen fully in terms of structure and flavour density. A vintage that allowed for both stature and finesse and significantly shaped the complexity of this great Riserva. Fermentation took place in large Slavonian oak barrels, followed by 18 months of ageing.

Basarin and San Cristoforo – on calcareous marl soils with sandy veins and moderate altitude – are the two Barbera sites for this powerful, exceptional wine. Selective manual harvesting, spontaneous fermentation with the vineyard's own yeasts in stainless steel and a maceration period of around three to four weeks ensure depth and grip. Malolactic fermentation and maturation then take place in wood (predominantly used barrels), without fining or filtration; short bottle rest before release.

“Pinzon” Pinot Nero Riserva Alto Adige DOC 2023
Pinzon. A location that has long been considered by connoisseurs to be synonymous with South Tyrolean Pinot Noir of the highest calibre. The small wine village on the eastern side of the Adige Valley, first mentioned in a document in 1230, lies in the middle of the vineyards along the Pinot Noir Trail, which are among the best Pinot Noir terroirs in Italy. Here, at an altitude of around 550 metres in the municipality of Montan, Peter Zemmer cultivates his vines on porphyry soils with dolomite-carbonate rock deposits – a geological combination that gives the wine its characteristic minerality. The microclimate of the site is characterised by the altitude above the Adige valley and the north-western exposure, which gives the vineyards long periods of evening sunshine. The "Ora", the famous valley wind that rises from Lake Garda through the Adige Valley, ventilates the vines in the afternoon hours and regulates the humidity – ideal conditions for the demanding Burgundy variety.

In 1984, Count Giuseppe Tasca d'Almerita wanted to celebrate his golden wedding anniversary with his wife Franca by creating a wine that told the family story and the history of the Tenuta at the same time. The uniqueness of the grape composition shows his romantic spirit: Inzolia and Sauvignon from the Tasca selection, the selection of a vineyard in Regaleali that dates back to the end of the First World War. The use of selected yeasts from the estate's own vineyards links this wine even more inextricably with the terroir from which it comes. Fresh in its youth, the wine is unexpectedly ageable and balances its tertiary aromas with the intensity of the fruit.

In the glass, it shines in a delicate salmon pink colour with a lively, fine-pored perlage. The nose seduces with floral nuances of rose petals, red berries and tangerine peel, subtly accompanied by yeast tones and a hint of almond biscuits. Fresh and harmonious on the palate, with clear acidity, a juicy, fruity centre and elegant salty minerality. The perlage is silky, the structure finely balanced, the final long, dry and characterised by a delicate bitter almond note. A name rises: Vallenuova, previously the estate's entry-level Chianti, will become a Riserva with the 2023 vintage. The vineyard, which surrounds the winery like a natural amphitheatre, bears the place name – still the official address of Tolaini in Castelnuovo Berardenga. What has changed is the time: instead of ten months, the Riserva now matures for much longer in a triad of Tuscan, Slavonian and Austrian oak before resting in the bottle for another few months. The base is now also clearly defined: 100% Sangiovese from silty-clayey soils with limestone and stones. Double selection – by hand in the vineyard, visually in the cellar – 20 days of maceration on the skins, temperature-controlled fermentation.
