Barolo Via Nuova is a blend of fruit from different vineyards in several villages of the appellation. Packed with cherry and raspberry flavours, it is both supple and firmly structured. Shows notes of earth, minerals, eucalyptus and aniseed that give it volume and structure, while the muscular tannins still have the upper hand on the finish at first. Deep and rich as it progresses, but never heavy. We find a hint of oak sweetness, but this only adds to the exotic beauty of the wine. Via Nuova 2021 is a wine of exceptional harmony, purity and finesse with an eternally long finish. SUPERIORE.DE

Pinot Noir at high altitudes in the Alps – a risk that few are willing to take and even fewer manage to master. Markus Prackwieser is one of those rare winemakers who infuses the Burgundian character of this capricious grape variety with South Tyrolean mountain zest. His Renaissance Pinot Nero Riserva is more than just a wine – it is the interplay of soil, microclimate and winemaker, manifested in liquid form. And as with all Renaissance wines, the rule applies: only in exceptional years, when the terroir reveals its greatest character, does this wine, after prolonged ageing in barriques, convince with its very own identity. The grapes come from the highest plots of the Gump Hof, where Pinot Noir grows at altitudes of 500 to 550 metres on calcareous moraines over quartz porphyry. Vinification follows Burgundian principles with Alpine rigour: a week of cold maceration, followed by two weeks of fermentation and contact with the must in stainless-steel tanks – with 40 per cent whole-bunch fermentation – that demanding technique which brings out floral notes, spice and silky tannins. This is followed by eighteen months in barriques, half of which are new, with malolactic fermentation. After blending, the wines mature for a further five months in large wooden casks, before at least a year of bottle ageing completes their development.

When Giovanni Massolino founded his winery in Serralunga d'Alba in 1896, he was the first to bring electric light to the village. A pioneer. His grandson Giuseppe, co-founder of the legendary Barolo consortium, continued this tradition – and then came the third generation, Giovanni, Camilla and Renato: they wrote a new chapter in 1985 by bottling Margheria separately for the first time. Today, the brothers Franco and Roberto continue the legacy. Both Oenologistwho understand that great wines are not made, but born. Margheria is located on the western edge of Serralunga's famous ridge, just a stone's throw away from the mythical Vigna Rionda – and yet it is its exact opposite. Where Vigna Rionda promises strength and eternity with its calcareous marl, the Margheria site at 280 metres above sea level plays with a higher admixture of sand in the limestone soil. The result: elegance meets structure, floral notes meet mineral depth. Serralunga shows its accessible side here without sacrificing its typical longevity.

Basically, Calcarole is not a vineyard. It is a limestone rock. A terraced massif above the Villa di Rovereti in Negrar, exposed to the south-west, rising to 230 metres – the warmest single vineyard in Valpolicella Classica and at the same time the origin of the most elegant Amarone produced by Guerrieri Rizzardi. The secret lies in this contradiction. Six parcels, planted between 1986 and 2000, are predominantly planted with Corvina, supplemented by Barbera and Sangiovese – varieties that hardly thrive in Valpolicella, but on the hot limestone of Calcarole contribute precisely the freshness that counterbalances the solar concentration. It was this vineyard that produced the first Amarone ever to be honoured as Gambero Rosso's "Vino Rosso dell'Anno" in 2009. Since then, Calcarole has received the Tre Bicchieri in nine out of eleven vintages.

Mazzon refers to Manincor itself as "Mason" to distinguish it from the larger vineyard of the same name situated above Neumarkt. Four hectares in this unique vineyard are planted with Pinot Nero: a south-facing high plateau at an altitude of 400 to 450 metres, bathed in sunshine and constantly exposed to the wind – ideal conditions for the tightly clustered grapes of this variety. The soil is sandy loam, interspersed with dolomite, porphyry, gneiss and granite, ranging from fine-grained material to fist-sized stones. The highest-altitude plot is home to the oldest vines, from which Manincor crafts this selection in top vintages: a Grand Cru within a Grand Cru. 2022 brought the winemaker great joy: an early year, warm in summer, with sufficient and well-distributed rainfall, cool nights and sunny days in autumn. Physiological ripeness, sugar content and acidity were in perfect balance – ripe fruit, a cool character and moderate alcohol levels characterise this well-balanced vintage. On 22 September, the Pinot Nero was harvested at perfect ripeness, with a yield of 31 hectolitres per hectare.

Dark, translucent ruby red in the glass, elegant even at first glance. An inviting aroma of red and black fruit flavours, almost a mix of wild berries and sour cherries. And then again that spiciness so typical of Tenuta di Valgiano, herbaceous and mineral, fresh and yet Mediterranean, simply incomparable. Full-bodied on the palate, very juicy, extract-sweet fruit, again accompanied by this mineral flavour. Juicy, deep, with a silky, elegant tannin structure and a wonderfully balanced interplay of fruit and acidity. A wine with finesse and piquancy, length and ageing potential for a good fifteen to twenty years. This wine should be decanted and left to breathe in the carafe for at least one to two hours before drinking. SUPERIORE.DE

Love is madness. And madness, says Francesco Illy, always creates something magical. This phrase not only lies behind the name of this wine – it explains the entire Podere Le Ripi project: in 1997, a nature photographer purchased a wild stretch of land in Tuscany near Castelnuovo dell'Abate, planted it according to biodynamic principles, surrounded himself with a young, ambitious team – and created one of the most unconventional Brunello producers in the appellation. "Amore e Magia" comes from the eastern side of Montalcino, where Monte Amiata protects the vineyards from harsh weather like a silent guardian and sends cool downdrafts through the vines at night. The soil here is ancient and salty – oceanic clay and limestone from a time when these hills were still the seabed. You can taste it. A vibrant, iodine-rich minerality that carries the wine from within. Fermentation with wild yeasts in open vats, 50 days' contact with the must – no intervention, just consistency. Then three years in large oak casks, followed by cement. No new oak to overpower the wine. No compromise to smooth it out.

Chiara's Barolo from the Mosconi single vineyard of the same name is powerful, muscular and full of opulence. Rich, bright ruby red colour. Rich aromas of eucalyptus, wild rosemary, plum and black cherry. Deep and powerful on the palate with beautiful spicy accents, dense tannins and a very juicy structure. For us, this Barolo belongs in the top class of the appellation, it always carries its great weight with maximum elegance and is highly authentic, completely in the style of Chiara Boschis, who has once again delivered something really great here. The legendary Baudana cru vineyard rises like a silent sentinel above Serralunga d'Alba. Its steep slopes, characterised by compact, calcareous marl with veins of clay, have been Nebbiolo territory for centuries – a terroir that produces density, structure and exceptional longevity. 2021 was characterised by an extremely harmonious ripening process, marked by clear temperature differences between day and night. The grapes were carefully harvest by hand to select only perfectly ripe grapes. After gentle destemming and a long, traditional maceration, the wine matured for around 32 months in large Slavonian oak barrels, which emphasise its natural depth without masking the precision of the fruit.

The grapes for Le Ripi's top Brunello come from a 4-hectare vineyard near Castelnuovo dell'Abate on the eastern side of Montalcino, not far from the Lupi e Sirene vineyard.

Giacomo Neri's Pietradonice is Cabernet Sauvignon at the highest level and is now a legend, as there is hardly a wine in Montalcino that can even come close to equalling it. Monumental and very concentrated, with hints of sour cherries and a fine cedar wood and liquorice note. The exciting thing: Pietradonice is clearly recognisable as a Montalcino wine and yet, with its herbal and spicy character, it is as typical of Neri as it is of the grape variety and therefore seems to come from another larger world. In the heart of the Valdarno Superiore, where the ancient Via dei Setteponti inspired Leonardo da Vinci to create his immortal landscape studies, lies Tenuta Sette Ponti – named after the seven bridges that have linked Arezzo and Florence since Etruscan times. Here, on 300 hectares where history meets modernity, Dr Antonio Moretti Cuseri realised a visionary idea in 1999: to create a Tuscan Bordeaux-style wine that combines international elegance with the soul of Tuscany. Oreno – named after the small river that flows through the estate in that clay-rich area where the Merlot vines put down their deepest roots – was born out of a passion for Bordeaux finesse. Fascinated by his travels to Bordeaux, Moretti Cuseri had existing vineyards grafted with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Whilst the Merlot thrives in the clay-rich soils, the Cabernet vines find their home in gravelly terraces that offer perfect drainage and natural temperature regulation. The Petit Verdot rounds off the cuvée with spicy notes and intense flavour.

The Sangiovese grapes for this wine come from the vineyard of the Empire of His Royal Highness, the Count of Turin, Vittorio Emanuele of Savoy, who planted it in 1935. The soil is a mixture of clay and gravel, rich in marl and rock, which gives the grapes a spectacular minerality. The temperature fluctuations during the day play a decisive role in developing the finest flavours, which are elegant and complex. The wine, bottled in numbered bottles, is not filtered in order to preserve all the typical varietal notes and characteristics of Sangiovese. SUPERIORE.DE

The historic Cerretta cru vineyard is located just north of the village of Serralunga d'Alba and is considered one of the most complex parcels in the appellation. The slopes are exposed to the south-west and west, giving the vines both long hours of sunshine and cooling evening breezes. The soils consist of a characteristic mixture of calcareous marl, clay and fine veins of sand – a constellation that gives the Nebbiolo here its unmistakable balance of power, elegance and aromatic depth. The 2021 vintage brought perfect conditions with cool nights, clear autumn days and a harmonious ripening curve. The grapes were harvest exclusively by hand, followed by traditional maceration and around 32 months of ageing in large Slavonian oak barrels, which allow the character of the vineyard to shine through clearly.

In 2011, Giampaolo Motta created a manifesto of love for both his daughter Carla and that unruly Tuscan diva called Sangiovese. After two attempts that proved unsatisfactory, the breakthrough came in 2011: the birth of a wine that comes exclusively from plot number 6 – a unique terroir of grey slate and sand that rests like a mysterious treasure in the golden Conca d'Oro of Panzano. What Bordeaux romantic Motta and his famous Oenologist Stéphane Derenoncourt have achieved here is a completely new interpretation of a single-varietal Sangiovese wine. "This wine is made by the soil, not the vineyard," philosophises Motta – a subtle but crucial distinction between terroir and mere geography.

The Serra site is located in the heart of Serralunga d'Alba, in the direct neighbourhood of some of the most renowned cru parcels in the municipality. At an altitude of around 360 metres and with a predominantly south-westerly exposure, the vines benefit from optimal sunshine in the afternoon, while the cool downdraughts at night ensure delayed, even ripening. The subsoil of calcareous marl with sandy inclusions gives the wines from the Serra vineyard their fine, almost silky texture. The 2020 vintage showed its balanced side: a moderate summer, a long growing season and a stable autumn ensured flawless grapes with perfect phenolic ripeness. After careful manual harvesting and selection, the grapes were gently pressed and fermented in concrete for a good three weeks. The wine then matured for two years in large oak barrels to preserve its elegance and terroir fidelity.

The Ravera vineyard on the Novello side, where steep hills descend from a castle perched on a beautiful panorama, is one of the best cru sites in the Barolo DOCG. From this vantage point, you can see Novello and the Elvio Cogno winery, which is located halfway up the slope. Valter Fissore's Ravera from the great 2021 vintage benefits from this special location and shows terrific versatility and depth every year.

1961: Beppe Colla makes a decision that will set a precedent in the history of Barolo: no more blends from different vineyards, but a wine from a single vineyard – bussia. An amphitheatre in Monforte d'Alba, seven hectares, at around 350 metres, exposed from south-west to south. Soils of limestone, marl, the famous "Marne di Sant'Agata Fossili". Terroir that gives the Nebbiolo strength without taking away its soul. 2021 was the year that the classic needs: a snowy winter with a good water supply, a long, temperate summer without heat peaks, strong temperature fluctuations in autumn. The light frosts in April reduced the yield – and concentrated what remained. Harvest from 29 September to 13 October, in perfect condition. Destemming in the cellar, maceration for 8 to 10 days at a maximum temperature of 30°C, malolactic fermentation before winter. Then 18 months in large oak barrels of various capacities – traditional, unobtrusive, serving.

Chianti Classico Riserva Castello di Volpaia is a dark, powerful wine. Black cherry, smoke, liquorice, incense, mocha, menthol, lavender and leather give this virile, brooding Riserva plenty of character. The palate is very aromatic with sweet red cherries, cedar wood and nuances of blood orange, yet very powerful and multi-layered with terrific depth and structure. A dream for Sangiovese lovers. In 1987, Sandro Chia drew a pencil sketch: a Roman centurion in the foreground, the castle in the background. The centurion as a symbol of transience, the castle as a symbol of eternity. He called the drawing "Romito del Romitorio" – the hermit of the Romitorio. And made it the label for the first wine that Castello Romitorio ever produced. Thirty-two years and many vintages later, Filippo Chia decided to rethink the Romito. Until 2018, it was a blend – sangiovese, Cabernet and Canaiolo. Then they reached deeper: Petit Verdot has been growing in the vineyards of Tenuta Ghiaccio Forte in Maremma since then, which Sandro Chia planted in the early 2000s. Soils of Pliocene origin – red clays and gravel at 170 metres. During the day, the Tyrrhenian Sea regulates the heat, while continental currents from the extinct Monte Amiata cool the evenings. A terroir made for a grape variety that is difficult to tame elsewhere. The hand-picked grapes travel to Montalcino, where they are selected and fermented in concrete vats. Fourteen months of ageing in semi-new French tonneaux, bottled unfiltered.

Thirty years. Thirty Tuscan harvests. When Sean O'Callaghan arrived in Tuscany in 1991 – a native Briton, influenced by his viticultural studies in Geisenheim and trained as a cellar master at Schlossgut Diel – he had a vision: not to tame Sangiovese, but to understand it. At Riecine, he spent a successful quarter of a century trying to unlock the secrets of this stubborn grape variety. Today, at Tenuta di Carleone in Radda in Chianti, the winemaker has become a true "whisperer". And the Uno 2021 marks his thirtieth harvest in this region – a quiet anniversary that looks inwards, not outwards.

Terre Alte is a masterpiece of Friulian white wine-making – a wine that has set the standard since its first vintage in 1981. The blend of Friulano, Pinot Bianco and Sauvignon from the finest vineyards around Rosazzo comes together here to form a vinological ideal of the Collio. The balance, but also the depth of its character and its personality, are almost unreal – a beguiling, truly great Italian white wine that impresses even in its youth, but will only reveal its inner depth over the years.
