• "Tre Torri" Rosato Carignano del Sulcis DOC 2020

“Tre Torri” Rosato Carignano del Sulcis DOC 2020

A successful Rosato is the aromatic Tre Torri with a spicy-intense taste and the pleasantly fresh aftertaste. SUPERIORE.DE

"Lifting up with a refined yet enticing display of dried flowers, exotic spice and hints of raw honey, the 2020 makes itself known. There are unexpected depths of texture here, guided by vibrant acidity that gives way to mulled apple and hints of almond. This finishes rich yet still energetic, a delicate floral sweetness lingering impossibly long. The Tre Torri is Carignano Rosato at its finest." Vinous

Intense Carignano from master hand for a small price. Deep ruby red in the glass, the nose is surrounded by small black-red fruits with a wild, pristine expression that we find only in the rough, untouched landscape of Sardinia. Beautiful spice with a soft, but nevertheless clearly recognizable interpretation of Sardinian red wines, as we love them. Wonderful drinking flow. SUPERIORE.DE

“Rocca Rubia” Carignano del Sulcis Superiore Riserva DOC 2018

Pronounced aroma of berries and spices. Dense on the palate with a fascinating balance between tannin and full-bodiedness. A complex red with a long, smooth finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Sparkling ruby with light dark garnet. Clear and open nose, full of blueberries, spicy macchia notes, some earthy tones in the background. Rich attack and course, opens with pithy, firm tannin, lots of zwetscke, firm pressure on the final." Falstaff

"The 2018 Carignano del Sulcis Rocca Rubia impresses more for purity than power, presenting a display of sweet florals, crushed stone, bright cherry and hints of flowery undergrowth. It's silky in texture, lifted by vibrant acidity, with tart wild berry fruits and saline-minerals giving way to violet tones toward the close. A subtle coating of tannin lingers, framing the experience nicely, as this tapers off with a bitter twang and hints of licorice. The Rocca Rubia is very pretty and lightly structured, showing the difficulties of the vintage while maintaining admirable balance." Vinous

Terre Brune is a 100% Carignano of seductive balance and fruitiness and every year one of the best reds of Sardinia. Aged in barriques, it shows a fresh but ripe fruit on the nose with a slight hint of cocoa. On the palate of beautiful depth, with present tannins. An exemplary wine vinified with love and full of regional typicity. SUPERIORE.DE

"Dense, sparkling ruby with a black core. Opens with fresh notes of mint, then lots of blueberry, blackberry, plus lots of liquorice. Opens on the palate with ripe fruit notes, lots of sturdy, dense tannin, gripping and tight, balsamic notes on the final." Falstaff

"This remarkable wine is made from mainly Carignano grapes grown on ungrafted bush-trained vines, and is matured in barriques for up to 18 months, plus a further year in bottle before release. The full, forward and seductive nose has aromas of blackberry and ripe plum with spicy chocolate and tobacco notes. The palate is full, ripe and round with sweet fruit and an intense spicy finish showing silky tannins." Decanter

"The 2016 Carignano del Sulcis Superiore Terre Brune is a beauty. It takes its time opening in the glass, at first wafting up with hints of blackberry, currants and smoke. Further swirling reveals a deeper display of violet pastille, giving way to black cherries, wild herbs and crushed stone. It's velvety in texture, fleshing out across the palate with a staining of rich dark fruits and minerals under an air of lavender and purple-tinged florals. A fine coating of tannin settles in, creating a youthfully structured feel, and a bitter twang of savory spice. Salted licorice lingers incredibly long. The 2016 Terre Brune is classic to the core, but it will require some cellaring to soften and come fully into focus." Vinous

"An attractive combination of dark fruit, such as blackberries with hints of vanilla, tea and bark. Tar, too. It's full-bodied and dense with layers of fruit and spices. Lovely drinkability now, but can go for a long time." James Suckling

    Things to know aboutCarignano

Carignano is a worldwide grape variety that is known by various synonyms. It is shrouded in legend in Sardinia, where it is said that it was brought to Sardinia by the Phoenicians in the 9th century BC. There's no proof of that, though. The variety probably comes from Spain, where it is known as Mazuela or Cariñena and has contributed significantly to the success of Priorat wines.

    Cariñena – mazuela – Carignano.

In Italy it is mainly located in the southwest of Sardinia, around Carbonia and the island of Sant'Antioco. This DOC for red wine and rosato is called Carignano del Sulcis, after the nearby famous archaeological Parco del Sulcis. The legendary oenologist Giacomo Tachis, who has made the variety known, is the "Terre Brune" Carignano del Sulcis Superiore DOC from 100% Carignano made one of the best and most sought after red wines of Sardinia. Also the collaboration of Sassicaia & Santadi under the label Punica brought with the "Barrua" a Carignano dominated Isole dei Nuraghi IGT, which has won almost all Italian and international top awards in recent years.

In the rest of Sardinia, Carignano is often found as a cuvée partner, for example in Mandrolisai, where he is married to Bovale Sarde and Monica Nera, or Campidano di Terralba, in some Cannonau di Sardegna and in the coveted Isola dei Nuraghi. Carignano is rarely found on the Italian mainland, for example in Lazio, where it is occasionally cultivated in the Cerveteri. SUPERIORE.DE
