“Tonaghe” Cannonau di Sardegna DOC 2024
Tonaghe carries the soul of Sardinia in its glass: a Cannonau that comes from three differently characterised regions – spoilt by the sun in the hills of Oliena, spiced by the sea breeze in the rugged Sinis and characterised by the hauntingterroir of the coastal region of Ogliastra. The grape variety releases a natural temperament. Fermentation and ageing take place in stainless steel and wood – a composition that harmonises freshness and structure.

!["Sartiglia" Cannonau di Sardegna DOC 2024]()
“Sartiglia” Cannonau di Sardegna DOC 2024
Cannonau is part of Sardinia's DNA – and Sartiglia is Contini's accessible expression of this traditional grape variety. The grapes come from vineyards in the province of Oristano, near the west coast, where sea breezes and sandy soils create a warm but balanced microclimate. The wine is aged partly in stainless steel and partly for six months in used barriques – this allows the fruit to remain in the foreground, supported by subtle ripeness and depth.

!["Naracu" Cannonau di Sardegna DOC 2022]()
“Naracu” Cannonau di Sardegna DOC 2022
A wine that tells of its origins and is also an invitation – naracu is an expression of Sardinian culture turned to stone, named after the mighty nuraghi that dominate the landscape. In the glass, Naracu is a medium-deep ruby colour with a delicate violet hue. The nose is precise and inviting: red berries and redcurrants, a hint of Mediterranean herbs and subtle mineral notes that give a sense of the Nordic wind. Clear and fresh on the palate – lean structure, juicy fruit and lively acidity. The finish is elegant, energetic and characterised by salty, mineral notes – a light pressure that lingers for a long time. Naracu is a Gallura-Cannonau that combines origin and vibrancy – it cools, refreshes but remains present. A purist red wine for modern palates: respectful, always harmonious and charmingly captivating. SUPERIORE.DE

!["Arjola" Cannonau di Sardegna Rosato DOC 2025]()
“Arjola” Cannonau di Sardegna Rosato DOC 2025
Sardinia's great red wine grape in an elegant interpretation: as a rosato, Cannonau shows a surprisingly delicate side, which the renowned Argiolas winery masterfully stages. The hand-picked grapes from the sun-drenched vineyards around Serdiana grow on clay and limestone soils, which give the wine its characteristic minerality. A short maceration period extracts just enough colour and structure for a delicate salmon pink with silver reflections. The nose combines juicy red berries – strawberry, raspberry – with floral notes and a hint of Mediterranean scrub. The palate is surprisingly full-bodied, with lively acidity and a subtly spicy finish typical of Cannonau. Perfect with grilled seafood, pasta with light sauces or Sardinian cream cheese. !["Costera" Cannonau di Sardegna DOC 2022]()
“Costera” Cannonau di Sardegna DOC 2022
A Cannonau that harmonises origin and structure – that's how Costera feels in the glass. The grapes come from the old sand and limestone hills of the south-east facing vineyard of the same name, where the intense sun and cool sea breeze combine to ensure aromatic ripeness and multi-faceted minerality. After controlled fermentation, the wine matures for around five months in barriques and cement tanks. The colour in the glass is a deep ruby red with a fine garnet hue. The bouquet unfolds with intense but not overpowering aromas: ripe strawberry, black cherry, herbal spice, cedar wood and subtle spicy notes. In the mouth, Costera shows deep fruit, warm and yet without heaviness; juicy, clearly contoured, with elegant tannins and mineral freshness that brings clarity. The finish is harmoniously long, savoury, slightly salty and persistently seductive. SUPERIORE.DE

!["Inu" Cannonau di Sardegna Riserva DOC 2020]()
“Inu” Cannonau di Sardegna Riserva DOC 2020
Inu – sardinian for "dog" – stands for steadfastness and character. This Riserva reveals the full potential of the indigenous Cannonau variety: clear, structured and with a typical Sardinian temperament. The grapes come exclusively from the best sites on volcanic alluvial soils in the Sinis-Tirso region, where Mediterranean warmth meets fresh breezes – a combination that creates delicate ripeness and aromatic precision. Careful hand-picking is followed by gentle maceration, then around 12 months of ageing in barriques and medium-sized oak barrels – followed by at least six months of ageing in the bottle. This gives the wine depth and tranquillity without losing its fruitiness.

!["Mamaioa" Cannonau di Sardegna DOC 2023 (BIO)]()
“Mamaioa” Cannonau di Sardegna DOC 2023 (BIO)
The name is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the Sardinian word for ladybird – and yet this wine is far more than just a charming gimmick. Mamaioa is an organically produced Cannonau in its purest form, spontaneously fermented, with short maturation in cement and stainless steel – undisguised, straightforward and characterised by the terroir of the Sinis region west of Oristano. A modern Cannonau with a natural signature, deliberately unadorned in the best sense of the word – honest, typical of the region and pleasingly versatile.

!["Noras" Cannonau di Sardegna DOC 2022]()
“Noras” Cannonau di Sardegna DOC 2022
A red wine with character – irresistible in its depth and yet with supple elegance. Noras comes from 90% Cannonau (Grenache) and 10% Carignano and is harvested from old vines rooted in sandy-granitic soils deep in the Sulcis terroir. After late manual harvesting, the must ferments at a controlled 22-24 °C for 12 days in stainless steel tanks, accompanied by regular pumping over to optimise extraction. Malolactic fermentation takes place early and spontaneously, followed by around six months of maturation in used French barriques. Before it is released for sale, Noras matures for a further six months in the bottle – a maturation and ageing process that gives it depth and elegance.

Grandiose Cannonau with a clear will: Sincaru ("serious") has a beautiful dialectic in its name and the sunny elegance of the Gallura terraces in the glass. 100% Cannonau from sun-drenched vineyards near Arzachena, on calcareous-sandy granite soil, clear mineral depth. The sea breeze with its cool nights ensures lively freshness and varietal typicity. In the glass, Sincaru has a dark ruby red colour with a subtle garnet rim. The aroma is open and aromatic: blackcurrant, ripe sour cherry, Mediterranean herbal notes and a hint of bergamot, carried by a fine, salty minerality. On the palate, the wine is round and supple, with lively acidity and softly coated tannins. The finish is clear, persistent and savoury-mineral – typically Gallura, elegant and full-bodied. !["Pentima" Cannonau di Sardegna Riserva DOC 2021]()
“Pentima” Cannonau di Sardegna Riserva DOC 2021
A wine like a Sardinian epic: Pentima bears the name of its place of origin, a tiny spot in the Surrau Valley, and also the soul of past generations. This Riserva is a broodinghomage to the terroir that has an impact far beyond the borders of Gallura. The 2021 vintage had long periods of sunshine with cool sea nights – ripening was therefore intense but never overheated. The grapes were harvested late and, as always, selectively, allowing them to ripen fully in terms of structure and flavour density. A vintage that allowed for both stature and finesse and significantly shaped the complexity of this great Riserva. Fermentation took place in large Slavonian oak barrels, followed by 18 months of ageing.

!["Antonio 100" Cannonau di Sardegna Passito DOC 2017 dolce <br> in gift box]()
“Antonio 100” Cannonau di Sardegna Passito DOC 2017 dolce · in gift box
When Antonio Argiolas celebrated his centenary in 2006, the family created a wine in his honour that is more than just a tribute – it is the legacy of a man who had dedicated his entire life to the Sardinian soil. Antonio 100 is only produced in exceptional vintages, when nature itself gives its consent to this monumental project. The 2017 vintage marks such a moment of perfection. The best Cannonau grapes from the Tenuta's oldest vineyards are selected for this exceptional passito – vines, some of which still come from Antonio Argiolas' own plantation. The harvest is followed by a centuries-old ritual: the grapes are spread out on bamboo mats and left to dry for three months under the warm Sardinian autumn sun. This appassimento process not only concentrates the sugars, but also develops the complex flavour precursors that later give the wine its incomparable depth. The subsequent vinification takes place in small batches with the utmost precision. The dried berries are gently pressed and the precious must ferments slowly in temperature-controlled tanks before the wine matures for two years in French barriques. During this time, the unique harmony between the powerful structure of the Cannonau and the elegant sweetness of the Passito method develops.

Cannonau – The soul of Sardinia
Cannonau is more than just a grape variety – it is the identity, history and pride of Sardinia in one glass. Rooted on the island for centuries, it is often considered the oldest grape variety in the Mediterranean. Archaeological finds near Borore, in the province of Nuoro, prove the presence of viticulture in Sardinia as early as 1200 BC – evidence that strengthens the local belief that Cannonau was originally Sardinian. From a genetic point of view, however, the variety is identical to the Spanish Garnacha Tinta (Grenache) and probably came to Sardinia in the Middle Ages via Aragonese trade routes. But whatever its origins may mean, Cannonau has long spoken its very own Sardinian language in the glass.
Character with strength and warmth
Cannonau produces medium to full-bodied wines with a warm, ripe aroma spectrum. The nose is dominated by red berries, ripe cherries, plums and spices such as cinnamon, cloves and liquorice. With age, notes of dried herbs, leather and tobacco also emerge. The tannin structure is soft, the acidity moderate, which gives the wine a supple, accessible style – but also a solid structure for ageing. At its best, Cannonau displays a complex balance between fruit, spice and Mediterranean warmth.
The climatic conditions of Sardinia – lots of sun, dry winds, poor soils – challenge the vine, but also promote its aromatic depth. Old vines, low yields and careful vinification have long made Cannonau a serious representative of Italian red wine culture, far removed from its former reputation as a rustic country grape. Francesca Argiolas, Oenologist and co-owner of Argiolas, says: "Cannonau is the flavour of Sardinia: wild, warm-hearted and free – a wine that speaks of landscape, light and life".
Sardinia as the home of great crus
Cannonau is grown almost exclusively in Sardinia, particularly in the east of the island, around Nuoro, Oliena, Jerzu and in Ogliastra. It is there, in the barren, high-altitude vineyards between the Mediterranean and the mountains, that the most elegant and powerful expressions of the variety are produced. The DOC designation "Cannonau di Sardegna" covers the entire island, but the best terroirs are mostly found in the sub-zones "Oliena", "Capo Ferrato" or "Jerzu".
The most renowned producers include Argiolas, Contini, Santadi and Vigne Surrau. Some wineries vinify pure Cannonau, while others supplement it with small proportions of indigenous varieties such as Bovale or Monica. Ambitious winegrowers are increasingly focussing on parcel selections and biodynamic methods in order to preserve the special expression of old vines.
Perfect with savoury dishes
Cannonau is a reliable companion in Sardinian cuisine. It is ideal with grilled lamb, wild boar ragù, salsiccia, pecorino sardo or malloreddus with tomato sugo and bottarga. It also harmonises perfectly with roasted vegetables, mushroom dishes or mature sheep's milk cheeses. Depending on the style, a serving temperature of between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius is recommended. Young, fruity varieties can be served slightly chilled, while mature wines benefit from aeration and a large glass.
Wine of the centenarians?
Ogliastra in eastern Sardinia, one of the most traditional Cannonau regions, is one of the so-called "Blue Zones" – those few areas in the world where people reach a remarkably high age. Researchers attribute this to a combination of genetic, social and nutritional factors. The local red wine is also a recurring focus: Cannonau has been shown to contain particularly high levels of polyphenols, including resveratrol, which is known for its antioxidant effect.
Whether a daily glass of Cannonau actually contributes to a long life cannot be scientifically proven – but the hypothesis is appealing. One thing is certain: the combination of a simple, natural diet, rich in olive oil, pulses and Sardinian sheep's cheese, combined with exercise, socialising and the moderate consumption of a wine full of character, results in a lifestyle that can at least make you satisfied and happy.
