Barolo “Paesi Tuoi” DOCG 2021
Barolo Paesi Tuoi is more than just a designation of origin. The name – borrowed from the novel "Among Peasants" by Cesare Pavese – evokes Piedmont not just as a landscape, but as a cultural space: rural, archaic, full of inner tensions. And so this Barolo is not an expression of a single cru, but a synthesis of the villages, hills and soils that together form the essence of this appellation. The grapes come from different, characterful vineyards around Barolo, Monforte and Serralunga, carefully selected and vinified separately. Long maceration periods, followed by around two years of ageing in traditional, large oak barrels – the result is a classic style with depth.

Between the famous hills of the Langhe, the Nebbiolo grapes for this Barolo ripen in some of the most renowned cru sites: Cerequio, Bussia Bofani, Brunate, Briccolina and Boscareto. The different soils – from calcareous marl to sandy-limestone Helveticum formations – formations combine here to create a finely balanced expression of elegance and depth. The ageing in large oak barrels preserves the character of the vineyards without smoothing out their peculiarities.

Barolo DOCG 2021
The Nebbiolo grapes for Matteo's entry-level Barolo (formerly blue label) come from his three vineyards Serralunga d'Alba, La Morra and Verduno. His style is characterised by a skilful balance between structural depth and accessibility. Brilliant ruby colour with a lively shimmer in the glass. The nose is elegant and multifaceted: wild berries, rose petals, aniseed and a fine herbal note interweave with a delicate undertone of mineral freshness. The tannin structure appears finely integrated in the mouth; clearly defined fruit and present, invigorating acidity characterise the first impression. The finish shows salty residues and an attractive length – elegant, powerful and stylish. This Barolo is a very successful introduction to the region, accessible enough to be enjoyed young, but open to time and ageing. It exemplifies a modern interpretation of the Barolo narrative: without much pathos, but with depth and origin. SUPERIORE.DE

Traditionally vinified Barolo from the estate's best vineyards. Brilliant ruby red colour. Complex, spicy bouquet of liquorice, tobacco, dried flowers, violets and damp leaves. Before individual vineyards became a currency, Barolo was an idea. An idea that combined different soils, different slopes, different communities into one whole – and created a complexity that no single vineyard could achieve on its own. Davide Rosso sticks to this idea. His Barolo DOCG combines grapes from three municipalities in equal parts: Serralunga d'Alba with its hard limestone marls and uncompromising tannin structure, Castiglione Falletto with somewhat lighter, sandy soils and a natural aromatic suppleness, and the commune of Barolo itself, whose Tortonian soils lend the Nebbiolo a floral, accessible side.

Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d’Alba DOCG 2021
Anyone looking for the hardest terroir in the Barolo zone will inevitably end up in Serralunga d'Alba. The whitish limestone marl soils of the Helvetian formation – compacted, rich in minerals, barren – give the Nebbiolo here a rigour that is not found elsewhere in the Langhe. No flattery, no quick opening. Instead: structure, depth, staying power. The Rosso family has been cultivating these soils for over a century. For the Barolo del Comune, Davide Rosso draws from four parcels that cover the entire breadth of the municipality: Costa Bella in the northern part, south-facing; Broglio, sandy and east-facing in the heart of Serralunga; Sorano, clay-rich, also east-facing; and Meriame, limestone-rich, a more recent acquisition. No single site dominates, the goal is a wine that represents Serralunga as a whole, not just one facet. Hand-picked in mid-October, spontaneous fermentation in concrete tanks for 25 days with daily pumping over and a délestage at half-time. Maturation in 50-hectolitre French oak barrels for 18 to 36 months, depending on the origin of the grapes. Bottled without filtration.

Albe! ... the poetic name of this Barolo refers to the sky at sunrise, as experienced by the various terroirs of the estate: Coste di Vergne, Fossati and La Volta. These high-altitude sites each produce slightly different dawns, which is symbolically reflected in the harmony of the cuvée. The grapes come from young but ripe Nebbiolo vines and combine the nuances of each parcel to create a flowing, elegant expression. The 2021 vintage is characterised by freshness and balance: Long vegetation phase at ideal temperatures, accompanied by cool nights that preserve intense fruit with lively acidity. The grapes were carefully harvested by hand, each parcel was vinified separately and only combined into a cuvée in the spring before bottling. The wine is matured for around 36 months in large Slavonian oak barrels (40–75 hl) with annual racking – a maturation that allows for depth and harmony.

The grapes for Clerico's entry-level Barolo come from younger vines in the top vineyards of Pajana, Ciabot Mentin and Percristina (Mosconi). The 2021 vintage is considered one of the best of the last decade: a balanced vegetation cycle with warm, sunny days and cool nights promoted even ripening and preserved the concise acidity structure. In the glass, it shines a rich garnet red with ruby-coloured reflections. The nose reveals a clear, complex aroma of ripe cherry, dark plum and dried rose, complemented by hints of violet, tobacco, liquorice and a fine, balsamic note. Powerful and precise on the palate, with juicy fruit, present, well-integrated acidity and taut, fine-grained tannins that promise a long development. The 2021 still needs to develop a little, but the essential components are already very convincing today. SUPERIORE.DE

Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d’Alba DOCG 2021
In the Barolo world, Serralunga d'Alba stands for strength, depth and remarkable longevity. The Nebbiolo grapes come from selected plots in the municipality, characterised by barren, iron-rich clay-marl soils with veins of sand from the Helvetic formation. These soils give the wines their characteristic tannic structure, while the altitude of 320 to 400 metres ensures cool nights and slow, even ripening. The 2021 vintage provided ideal conditions. Sunny, clear days and fresh nights harmonised fruit precision and aromatic depth. Each parcel was harvested separately, gently fermented and then matured for around 30 months in large Slavonian oak barrels to preserve the typicality of the terroir while developing supple, multi-layered tannins.

Barolo DOCG 2021
A historic Barolo from the estate (first produced in 1905!), composed from Nebbiolo parcels in the heart of the appellation. The grapes are selectively harvested by hand, the lots are carefully destemmed and fermented; maceration takes around eight days at moderate temperatures and malolactic fermentation is completed before the onset of winter. The wine then matures for at least 18 months in large oak barrels of various sizes – an ageing process that preserves balance, transparency and expression of origin. The 2021 vintage began with a mild winter and abundant rainfall, which created valuable water reserves. A light frost in mid-April reduced the yields, but without affecting the quality. This was followed by a long, stable summer without heat peaks; scattered thunderstorms in June/July and pronounced day/night amplitudes during the ripening phase ensured a precise harvest from 6 to 15 October. The grapes achieved excellent phenolic ripeness with bright acidity.

As always, Vietti's outrageously priced "entry-level" Barolo (formerly Castiglione) is based mainly on grapes from Ravera, with smaller portions from Ginestra, Mosconi, Bricco Ravera (in Monforte), Le Coste, Costabelle, Meriame, Briccolina and Codana. Ruby red colour of medium intensity. The nose is explosive, opulent, persuasive and immediate. Notes of plum, red and ripe black cherry, black cherry, rose petals and tobacco are perceptible. The palate is classic, rich, powerful, with notes of alpine herbs and a leathery finish. The tannin is already well integrated. Especially in the peak year 2021, this wine is an absolute insider tip in the winery's incredibly terrificBarolo line-up every year, and not just because of its price. SUPERIORE.DE

Here, where seventy-year-old Nebbiolo vines are rooted in alluvial soils with a calcareous clay layer, wines of remarkable balance are produced. On the northern edge of the Barolo zone, where Verduno towers over the Langhe hills like an outpost of elegance, lies one of the most mysterious MGAs in the entire denomination. Pisapola – a name familiar only to the initiated, but for those who know it, it holds the promise of exceptional finesse. Here, on calcareous clay and sandstone soils between 250 and 300 metres above sea level, Matteo Ascheri creates a Barolo that expresses the unique personality of Verduno in its purest form. Verduno is different from the other Barolo communes. While Serralunga stands for power and Castiglione Falletto for structure, Verduno is a refuge of elegance and flavour. The complex soil composition of limestone-clay, silt and sandstone, criss-crossed by chalky veins, gives the wines that savoury note that makes Verduno-Baroli so unmistakable. It is no coincidence that the rare Pelaverga grape variety, famous for its white pepper flavours, also thrives here – a clear sign of the aromatic intensity that these soils produce.

Coste di Rose is a gently curving, east-facing single vineyard above Barolo, famous for its unusually sandy soils from the Sant'Agata formation. Inclusions of limestone and marl are found between the layers of light-coloured, fine sand – a terroir that moulds Nebbiolo here into one of the most fragrant, finesse-rich Barolo styles in the region. The vines are planted at an altitude of around 240 to 270 metres, which, in combination with the airy location, ensures slow maturation and a particularly elegant tannin structure. The top 2021 vintage brought ideal ripening conditions: sunny days, cool nights and a flawless September led to fully ripe grapes with clear fruit and a fine balance of acidity. The grapes were harvested exclusively by hand, parcel by parcel and strictly selectively. After a gentle, long fermentation, the wine was matured organically for around 36 months in large Slavonian oak barrels to preserve its floral elegance and silky texture.

Barolo di Serralunga d’Alba DOCG 2021
Serralunga sits enthroned on its hill like a medieval fortress – and its wines taste exactly the same. Of all eleven Barolo communes, this one is the most uncompromising: here, where the oldest soils in the region lie, grey marl and sandstone from the Serravallian twelve million years ago, the Nebbiolo has to fight for every drop of water. The roots dig deep into the cement-like rock, interspersed with limestone and iron oxide. The result is wines of monumental structure – austere, long-lasting, legendary. Enrico Serafino has been cultivating his own vineyards here, an investment by the Krause Gentile family since 2015. Vinification is an act of precision: hand-picking is followed by sorting on the vibrating table, cooling with carbonic acid snow and cold maceration before fermentation. The must remains on the skins for a full 28 days – with délestage and a submerged cap, Serralunga is extracted for what it has to give. The wine is aged for a total of 28 months, first in tonneaux and then in larger oak barrels.

The soil here – calcareous marl soils, millions of years old, compacted and rich in minerals – forms Barolos with a structure and depth that simply cannot be found elsewhere. The MGA Cerretta is located on the south-eastern slope of the municipal area, at an altitude of 350 to 365 metres, in the zone that winegrowers and critics have appreciated for generations for its extraordinary combination of power and finesse. The Rosso family has been cultivating these vineyards since the 1890s – first Giovanni, then his son Davide, who took over responsibility in 2001 at the age of 27 and since then has made a single sentence the guiding principle of his work: Wine should be a perfect reflection of its terroir.

Barolo DOCG 2021
A classically composed and perfect introduction to Altare Nebbiolo from its own vineyards in Barolo, Castiglione Falletto and Serralunga d'Alba. With its modern character (use of barriques), the Elio Altare winery has always been one of those producers whose Barolo wines appear less hard and brittle when young and rarely beg for more than 10 years of further ageing in the bottle.

![Barolo Ravera DOCG 2021 (BIO)]()
Barolo Ravera DOCG 2021 (BIO)
Ravera is considered one of the great Grand Cru sites of Barolo – majestically situated on a south-west facing high plateau of Novello. G.D. Vajra's plots here lie at an altitude of 320 to 340 metres, where the vines are deeply rooted in the calcareous and clayey marl soils of the Sant'Agata formation. This geological mixture gives the wine its characteristic depth, firm structure and mineral signature. Ravera is famous for Barolo with cool precision, rich fruit and enormous ageing potential. The 2021 vintage offered picture-perfect conditions: a harmonious growing season with no periods of extreme heat, a long, sunny autumn with cool nights and a late, perfectly ripe harvest at the end of October. Fermentation took place gently with an extended maceration period to maximise colour, structure and aromatic finesse. The organic ageing for 30+ months in large Slavonian barrels was deliberately restrained in order to preserve the powerful but nuanced personality of the terroir unadulterated.

![Barolo Ginestra "Vigna del Gris" DOCG 2021 (BIO)]()
Barolo Ginestra “Vigna del Gris” DOCG 2021 (BIO)
Monforte d'Alba – the name stands for depth, warmth and at the same time a taut, cool vein in the wines. The legendary Cru Ginestra lies in the centre of this high plateau, and at its heart is the single vineyard Vigna del Gris – a gently sloping plot with a south-easterly exposure at an altitude of 300 to 320 metres. The soils, a complex mixture of sand, silt and clay, provide the perfect stage for Nebbiolo, planted here in two stages: 1978 and 2000. Today, these vines produce a grape quality that is characterised by both concentration and finesse. The 2021 vintage is considered almost ideal in Barolo: a cool spring, followed by a warm, stable summer with no periods of extreme heat and a long, even ripening period into golden October. For Conterno Fantino, the manual harvest began in mid-October – the berries reached a flawless phenolic ripeness. After 12 to 15 days of fermentation and maceration in stainless steel, the wine is aged for two years in French oak, partly in barriques and partly in larger barrels. This combination gives the wine structure and complexity without masking the unmistakable signature of the vineyard.

![Barolo Castelletto "Vigna Pressenda" DOCG 2021 (BIO)]()
Barolo Castelletto “Vigna Pressenda” DOCG 2021 (BIO)
High above the district of Perno in Monforte d'Alba lies the cru parcel Vigna Pressenda – part of the traditional MGA Castelletto, which is one of the easternmost top vineyards in Barolo. Early Piedmontese wine chroniclers already mentioned these steep slopes, which lean towards the morning sun and are characterised by a complex soil mosaic of calcareous marl, sandy inclusions and ferrous veins. The elevated position of around 370 metres and the constant breeze from the Tanaro Valley give the grapes a remarkable freshness and aromatic precision, even in warm years. The 2021 vintage, widely celebrated as an exceptional vintage in Barolo, brought ideal ripening conditions: A balanced vegetation cycle with warm, sunny days and cool nights allowed the Nebbiolo berries to ripen slowly and completely. The grapes were harvested by hand in mid-October, with strict selection to ensure that only perfectly ripe harvestwere brought to the cellar. Ageing in French oak for around 24 months brings depth and aromatic complexity without masking the clear fruit centre.

It is a vintage that is highly praised by almost all wine critics. The Barolos of the 2021 vintage are strikingly expressive, with a nose that tends towards openness rather than austerity. These wines show the power and ageing potential of great red wines, but without the ponderous extraction of previous years. Compared to the more vertical 2019 vintage, the 2021 is just as structured but wrapped in a lush fruit profile. While most of the 2021 wines are not necessarily ready to drink immediately, they will shine after just one or two years in the bottle and retain their remarkable ageing potential.
The year 2021 was not without its challenges. Heavy frost in April reduced the harvest in several top locations and devastating hail in mid-July caused major damage, especially in the nearby Roero and Monferrato, but also made itself felt in some locations in Barolo. The heat sum data show that 2021 was warmer than the 20-year average, especially in the summer months from June to September. Although temperatures remained high throughout the summer, there were no peaks or periods of unusually high heat. Rainfall was lower than normal, but the previous winter's precipitation was undoubtedly beneficial, as were the well-timed summer showers.
Many wines of the vintage bear witness to the expressiveness and depth of what a contemporary Barolo wine means.
The 2021 vintage, which is poetically reminiscent of the legendary 1985 vintage thanks to the snowy winter and warm summer, has secured its place as a modern classic.
One of the virtues of this vintage is that the wines are consistently of a high standard. Even though it may not reach the exquisite level of sophistication of 2016, it is undeniably worth a purchase.
As always, we have prepared the first reviews (Vinous, Wine Advocate and Decanter) for you below, we hope you enjoy reading them! SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2021 Barolos are refined, elegant wines that will delight Piedmont fans. Many entry-level Barolos are excellent, which is always a sign of a good year. Many 2021s are characterised by good colour, open aromatics, supple fruit and fine, ripe tannins. They are richer than the generally austere 2019s, but livelier than the open-knit 2020s, making the 2021s the most harmonious and consistent of the group. Ultimately, the 2021 vintage is characterised by a high average quality.
'Great wines are made in the vineyard', as the saying goes. Nothing could be further from the truth. The grapes for wine production are harvested in the vineyard. The wine is made in the cellar. The 2021 vintage of Barolo is a perfect example of this. Regardless of the conditions and/or the potential that the growing season has offered, the wines themselves are just as strongly characterised by the decisions made by the producers in the cellar, if not more so.
How will the Barolos of today age? I wish we knew the answer. It's a difficult question, with many factors at play. Most harvestask about ageing capacity in the context of climate change. This is understandable when you consider that climatic conditions have changed significantly in recent decades. But there is more to it than that.
As I have written before, Piedmont has so far been a net beneficiary of climate change. Good to exceptional vintages are much more common than they used to be.
Nebbiolo was traditionally a very difficult grape to pick, as the grapes can only be detached from the stalk when fully ripe, and it was a challenge to achieve full ripeness. Today, with more ripeness and better destemming machines, this is no longer a problem.
From another perspective, it can be assumed that a considerable amount of stems and levers were added to the tanks of wines from the 1950s onwards. Winemaking today is far gentler than it used to be. Today, large-format wood is often favoured over small French oak barrels for ageing. As a result, today's wines are often ready to drink shortly after their release. This in turn has contributed to a massive increase in popularity. When I think of the 2021s in this report, many of them are very enjoyable now, others will be good to drink in a few years, and only a few will need longer ageing. That's quite a change. How will the wines of today develop in the long term? I don't know, but it will be interesting to find out..." Vinous
"The 2021 vintage of Barolo (now on the market) and Barbaresco (with many wines on the market and more in the pipeline) is something for collectors. This excellent vintage has the fruit intensity, acidity and tannin structure to withstand long ageing in the cellar. The wines today offer a beautiful elegance and complexity and a promising development for the future. Together with 2001, 2010 and 2016, the 2021 vintage can be counted among the best since the start of the new millennium.
The 2021 vintage was characterised by a smaller berry size and a greater concentration of aromas. The flavours stand out the most for me, especially the very sharp and concentrated way in which they are expressed. Tasting the 2020 and 2021 vintages side by side, the superiority and ageing potential of the 2021 vintage became clear. The 2020 wines are simpler and more immediate, and some feel short in the centre of the palate. The 2021 vintage, on the other hand, offers length and straightforwardness, delivering classic wines from cooler growing conditions.
The 2021 vintage could be your last chance to stock up your cellar for the next few years.
The upcoming 2022, 2023 and 2024 vintages all present different challenges, and although they are fruity and immediate, none of them are likely to match the ageing potential of the 2021 vintage." Wine Advocate
"The 2021 Barolo vintage is here, and it's making waves. The tastings reveal a vintage with a distinctive character, ripe fruit and impressive structure, suggesting impressive longevity. However, some wines miss the mark and emphasise the nuanced complexity of the vintage. Some communes shine, while others deliver mixed results. Many wines are already expressive, even exuberant. The fruit character is ripe, but not tertiary or overripe, and the wines do not develop too quickly. It is a vintage with substance and volume, with rich, ripe tannins. The alcohol is well absorbed and the acidity remains excellent. We tasted the 2021 together with the 2020 at a handful of wineries. It's a shame that the first vintage will probably overshadow the second in the press, as in some cases I favoured the harmonious, finer and livelier 2020. Hopefully Barolo lovers will find room for both in their cellars.
One of the hallmarks of an outstanding vintage is the high quality throughout the region.
The blind tastings organised by the Albeisa Consortium by commune provided information on the performance of the individual communes, while the visits to the wineries allowed a direct comparison of the different MGAs from the same vineyard. Another factor in the assessment of Barolo is its ageing potential. In general, the 2021s are well equipped with body and structure for ageing in the cellar, without the hard tannins of the past. Some wines will be at their best over the next seven to ten years – others will certainly need longer – with the top wines, as is so often the case, being built for a few decades
However, we wouldn't dream of calling the 2021 vintage a classic vintage, but it certainly has the potential to be considered a modern benchmark in this warming climate.
The vintage seems to have been made especially for Monforte d'Alba. The wines from this municipality are balanced in volume and effortlessly carry their large frame. Unsurprisingly, many recommendations come from the great but always excellent Bussia MGA. In addition to top wines such as Aldo Conterno's Colonnello and Giuseppe Rinaldi's bottling, the lesser-known Cascina Amalia and Marrone are also worth a visit. The renowned Mosconi and Ginestra vineyards in Monforte will also shine in 2021, with the Mosconi by E. Pira & Figli and the Ciabot Mentin Ginestra by Domenico Clerico.
Serralunga d'Alba also has a strong presence in 2021 beyond the iconic Falletto monopole from Bruno Giacosa. And La Morra, the most productive commune in Barolo, is 2021 – as so often – inconsistent, but offers more pleasant surprises than disappointments. Cannubi delivered mixed results, with fantastic bottlings from Elio Altare and Brezza, but also others that unfortunately did not live up to the reputation of this sacred hill. Even the cooler, higher-altitude Bricco delle Viole showed more richness and substance than usual, although G.D. Vajra managed this site skilfully. Several winemakers noted a slower fermentation. Giuseppe Vajra attributes this to the low nitrogen content of the soil in combination with the dry summer. 'For some, this is bad news, but we like long fermentations,' he explains. A smaller group of wines from Novello focussed on the Ravera, one of the highlights of the vintage. It's not just the superstars Elvio Cogno and Vietti who are helping to boost Ravera's growing reputation." Decanter
