It was a dream that engineer Gastone Bazzocchi planted in the Tuscan soil in 1947 – five hectares of Sangiovese on a hill he called Bòggina. Luca Sanjust, his grandson and former painter, now thinks of Paul Klee's "Angelus Novus" and Walter Benjamin's interpretation of this angel, who "looks to the past" while "a storm blows from paradise". This is Bòggina: a wine with its eyes turned to the past and yet mercilessly pushed into the future. Since 2011, Petrolo has been experimenting with the vinification of a special lot from the best grapes from this historic vineyard in terracotta amphorae from Impruneta – the pottery that has characterised Tuscan culture since the Etruscans. Fermentation takes place for two weeks in 300 and Liters litre amphorae with indigenous yeasts before the vessels are hermetically sealed. The wine macerates on the skins for eight months, protected by natural skin contact without the addition of sulphites.
The time in the terracotta is noticeable on the nose: earthy umami notes of brick and clay, the saltiness and sand of mixed soils. Sweet red cherries, mint, orange peel and cinnamon envelop this silky, medium-bodied Sangiovese. On the palate, the translucent beauty of Sangiovese unfolds in its purest form – elegant rather than powerful, juicy and precise, with a tightly woven structure between fruit, acidity and floral length. A wine that artistically walks the line between rustic and graceful – a living testimony to Tuscan cultural roots, reinterpreted through the vision of an artist who fortunately became a winemaker. "Sparkling ruby red in colour with a light rim. Intriguing nose, lots of marzipan, cherries and raspberries, backed by black pepper. Dynamic on the palate, comes in many layers, animating interplay of acidity and tannins, long, spicy final, already drinking well, but also has great ageing potential." Falstaff
"The 2023 Boggina A is compelling. Sweet pipe tobacco, cedar, mint, dried cherries, orange peel and dried rose petals give this medium-bodied Sangiovese a remarkable aromatic presence with a noticeable hint of exoticism. I particularly admire the dynamic energy and overall complexity of the wine." Vinous
"Wonderful fresh flavours of strawberries and flowers with a hint of terracotta. Medium-bodied with fine tannins and a fruity finish with gravel and graphite. Subtle and creamy texture. Bright and concentrated. Produced in terracotta amphorae from the Chianti Classico." James Suckling
