“La Massa” Rosso Toscana IGT 2018

Sparkling, rich ruby. Intense scent of raspberries and cassis, herbal spicy notes. Smooth, dense, fresh and juicy berry fruit on the palate. Long, voluminous and elegant - and not only because of the price a clear buy! SUPERIORE.DE

"Dark ruby with a hint of garnet and brightening rim. Minimally reductive on the nose at first, then a little bacon-smoky, finally rich leather and dark berry fruit. Polished on the palate with rich fruit, currently still seems very young, a bit wide-meshed on the back end." Falstaff

"A blend of mostly Sangiovese with smaller parts Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and a touch of Alicante Bouschet, the Fattoria la Massa 2018 La Massa is a textured and softly pliable wine that shows gorgeous color saturation and a panoramic bouquet with black fruit, dried cherry, plum, spice and sweet tobacco. This vintage offered moments of heat and moments of coolness, and the whole approach is balanced quite nicely in this bottle. I give it a solid 10-year drinking window, and you get great value." • "Carla 6" Sangiovese di Toscana IGT 2012

“Carla 6” Sangiovese di Toscana IGT 2012

Carla 6 - a breathtaking Sangiovese selection made from the best berries. The strict selection has paid off: the Sangiovese is full of character and deep, with sweet and soft contours of cherry and blackberry from its feminine side. Enormously complex and perfectly balanced in taste, velvety, fruity and with noticeable tannins, infinitely long. Carla 6 will be remembered. SUPERIORE.DE

"Brilliant, intense ruby. Opens in the nose with notes of green olive paste, then lots of fresh, crunchy cherry, some cardamom, exciting. Ground and juicy in the base and course, opens up with firm tannin with a good grip, shows many layers, in the back area still somewhat rough, still needs storage, but has very good potential."Falstaff

"Here's a wine that is completely new to me (but I am thrilled by the introduction). The 2012 Carla 6 is a spectacular expression of 100% Sangiovese with bursting berry and cherry aromas that give the wine an immense sense of buoyancy and vertical lift. Spice, leather, tobacco, cola, and licorice flood in at the rear and add to the wine's wide aromatic foundation. The tannins are silky smooth and the wine glides clear over the palate in seamless fashion. It's an absolute beauty."Robert Parker

“Carla 6” Sangiovese di Toscana IGT 2014

Carla 6 - a breathtaking Sangiovese selection made from the best berries. The strict selection has paid off: the Sangiovese is full of character and profound, with sweet and soft contours of cherry and blackberry from its feminine side. Enormously complex and perfectly balanced in taste, velvety, fruity and with noticeable tannins, infinitely long. Carla 6 will be remembered. SUPERIORE.DE

"Marked by black currant, violet, vanilla and spice notes, with dense tannins underneath. Fresh, if a bit chunky, with a good dose of new oak lingering on the finish." Wine Spectator

"The 2014 Carla 6 is a beautiful expression of Sangiovese from Panzano in Chianti. The wine sports a rather lean and streamlined style, but don't be deceived because there is ample depth and power to hold up the rear. The bouquet is bright and caressing with wild cherry, dried cassis, rose bud and moist clay earth. That earthy quality is so beautifully indicative of the Chianti territory. The house style, with that extra extraction and richness, comes through loud and clear. The wine ages for 14 months partially in new oak and partially in cement vats." Robert Parker

"A muscular and rich red with tar, dark berry, bark and spice character. Full body, chewy and dense. Structured and tannic yet fresh at the same." James Suckling

"The 2014 Carla 6, La Massa's 100% Sangiovese, is fabulous. Super-expressive, bright and nuanced to its core, it possesses remarkable harmony and persistence. The dark red cherry, plum, mint and licorice flavors are beautifully delineated, and attractive floral notes gradually open up to add lift. This is the best vintage of the Carla 6 yet." “Carla 6” Sangiovese di Toscana IGT 2017

Full of character and profound, the Sangiovese shows its feminine side with sweet and soft contours of cherry and blackberry. Enormously complex and perfectly balanced on the palate, velvety, fruity and with precisely proportioned tannins, infinitely long. SUPERIORE.DE

"Sparkling, rich ruby with a slight garnet sheen. Inviting, open nose with notes of raspberry, black cherry and some clove. Full-bodied and firm in the attack and course, opens with gripping, dense tannin, embedded in fine melting, then a little drying on the final." Falstaff

"A pure expression of Sangiovese, the Fattoria la Massa 2017 Carla 6 is an exacting and precise expression of the grape with pure delineation and a long succession of cherry and wild berry aromas. Grapes are sourced from the slightly higher plot of vines to the right of the main drive that descends to the Fattoria la Massa winery. The wine is softly embroidered and detailed with integrated tannins and lots of glossy silkiness on the polished finish." Robert Parker

"The 2017 Carla 6, La Massa's 100% Sangiovese, is fleshy, succulent and incredibly inviting. Sweet red cherry, kirsch, mint, blood orange and spice give the 2017 its racy feel. There is plenty of Sangiovese character, and yet at the same time, proprietor Giampaolo Motta has succeeded in crafting a wine that has its own distinctive personality. I can't think of many pure Sangioveses that manage to be opulent and also varietal." Vinous

"Lots of ripe cherry with floral and citrus-rind undertones. Full-bodied with creamy tannins and a pretty finish of delicious berries and hints of sandalwood. Subtle and complex. Needs time to soften, but already a beauty. Pristine." James Suckling

Impressive suppleness on the palate, the fruit always juicy and centred, wonderful and almost perfect in structure, polish, elegance and length. SUPERIORE.DE

"Rich, sparkling ruby with a black core. Intense nose with notes of molasses and liquorice, then lots of elderberries and cassis. Substantial and dense in the attack and course, builds up in many layers, firm and gripping, juicy and with firm pressure on the final." Falstaff

"Intense cloves, ripe berries, sandalwood and cedar on the nose, following through to a medium to full body with firm, lightly chewy tannins and dusty texture." James Suckling

"This wine has a very special signature and a unique intensity that makes it stand out in a crowd. The Fattoria la Massa 2017 Giorgio Primo is a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon with a smaller part Petit Verdot. There are ripe fruit elements of blackberry and dark cherry that find a happy interaction with spice, leather and grilled steak gristle. The wine's savory side is well developed and textured, giving it a firm grip as it wraps thickly over the palate." Robert Parker

"The 2017 Giorgio Primo is fabulous. Inky, deep and pulsing with energy, the 2017 has so much to offer. Most surprisingly of all, it is quite reticent and closed, which is so unusual for this wine. Dark red/purplish berry fruit, leather, cedar, spice, tobacco and espresso add a good deal of aromatic intensity, with plenty of Cabernet Sauvignon savoriness." Vinous

Don't get me wrong:The sheer power of the wine is proudly put on display. Dark fruitextraction is followed by bursting plum, blackberry and sweet spice. Idrank this wine over the course of 24 hours and was thrilled to see itsexciting evolution. With time, truffles, wet earth and even a touch ofsharp Pecorino cheese begin to emerge. About the winemakersFattoria La MassaTuscany | Chianti
    Fattoria La Massa

Giampaolo Motta is called a lateral thinker by many colleagues. In any case, he is always good for surprises. Born in Naples, he worked in renowned wineries in the Chianti Classico region. His favourite wines, however, were from Bordeaux. No wonder then that he soon found himself in famous chateaux. It was there that the idea was born that it must be possible to press red wines of the same quality in Tuscany.

In 1992 he was fortunate enough to purchase an old winery, the Fattoria La Massa, in the best location of Panzano in Chianti. "Conca d'Oro" - the golden bowl - is what the locals call this south-facing huge depression in the landscape, which looks like an oversized clam full of vines. The name, however, comes from the time when wheat was still cultivated here, which in the light of the afternoon sun made the natural amphitheatre glow golden. Today it is a lush green of the vines that have long dominated here. However, the Fattoria La Massa was already mentioned here with wine in documents in the 15th century.

For ten years Giampaolo Motta, with the help of the star oenologist Carlo Ferrini and Stéphane Derenoncourt from Bordeaux as advisors, experimented with the grape varieties laid down in the Consorzio Chianti Classico, with various clones and rootstock vines, Guyot and Cordon training and - finally, he surprisingly left the association. He did not want to be restricted anymore: "After ten years of work, I was not really happy with the result." Success soon proved him right, because his "Giorgo Primo", which originally featured varying proportions of the Bordeaux varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot or Alicante Bouschet, depending on the vintage, in addition to Sangiovese, climbed rapidly into the Olympus of Italian top wines and is now a pure Bordeaux cuvée with a main proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, which matures excellently in the Conca d'Oro. His "second wine" La Massa is a cuvée with Sangiovese as main variety and married with Bordeaux varieties. Named after his daughter Carla, this wine is a selection of the best Sangiovese grapes.

Giampaolo Motta never allowed himself to be subjected to the regulations of the BIO associations. Smiling, he explains "neither organic nor biodynamic - but logical and dynamic". "I live here and therefore have no interest in pesticides or systemic treatments" he adds.

When you enter his newly built cellar when the grapes are delivered, you see neither tanks nor barrels, but a chessboard floor made of black and white tiles. And on each side 6 stainless steel closures embedded in the floor. Nothing else. No hoses, no pumps. Everything here runs only by gravity from top to bottom. Because underneath these closures are the fermentation tanks, one floor below. Okay, this is different at harvest time. Because there are conveyor belts on the chessboard and lots of employees who sort the delivered grapes by hand, because only the best are allowed downstairs. Giampaolo Motta himself developed a uniquely gentle, sophisticated stirring system to push the mash down.

In Bordeaux, Motta had also met the architect Bernard Mazieres, who renovated Château Petrus, Mouton-Rothschild and Château Latour, among others - who probably paid much more than Giampaolo Motta, who simply invited and hosted the architect until he was overwhelmed by the charm of the landscape, as well as the charm, the attention to detail and the uncompromising nature of the host and began to plan. This too was probably rather surprising.

The most recent surprise came in November 2018, when Giampaolo Motta, by now successful and awarded worldwide, sold 40% each to the Tommasi wine group from Valpolicella and Ermen Minari, a manager of a French high rack logistics company, to enable further investments in vineyards, he announced. He will retain 20% and the management of the winery. The outstanding quality of La Massa's wines is therefore assured.
The Tommasi wine dynasty from Valpolicella has been buying or investing in vineyards across Italy for more than twenty years. In the Maremma at Poggio al Tufo, in Montalcino at Podere Casisano, in Basilicata at Azienda Paternoster, in Oltrepò Pavese at Tenuta Caseo and in Manduria at Masseria Surani.  SUPERIORE.DE

"Giampaolo Motta's Fattoria La Massa is one of my favorite estates in Panzano-in-Chainti. This tasting served as a happy reminder of why I love these wines so much. The 2012 Giorgio Prima is impeccable. It is a small miracle in what most agree was not an easy vintage. Mr. Motta evidently has that magic touch. I loved this set of new releases and was particularly thrilled to try a new wine: The IGT Toscana Carla 6 that left me extremely satisfied. In truth, I was floored by it."Robert Parker
