“Carla 6” Sangiovese di Toscana IGT 2011

Carla 6 - a breathtaking Sangiovese selection made from the best berries. The strict selection has paid off: the Sangiovese is full of character and deep, with sweet and soft contours of cherry and blackberry from its feminine side. Enormously complex and perfectly balanced in taste, velvety, fruity and with noticeable tannins, infinitely long. Carla 6 will be remembered. SUPERIORE.DE

"Brilliant ruby with a slight garnet shimmer. Intense nose with notes of pickled cherries, some pomegranate and sealing wax, multi-layered. Round and smooth in the base and course, much ripe fruit, dense, present tannin, builds up in many layers, fine sweet melt."Falstaff

"Hints of vanilla, caramel and Bourbon mark this nicely oaky red. Bright black cherry and plum flavors form the core, showing concentration and a grainy texture. Still compact and monolithic, yet long."Wine Spectator

"This red shows pretty blueberries, lightly toasted oak and meat. Full body with soft and round tannins and a fruity, blueberry finish. A new pure sangiovese from Gianpaolo Motta of La Massa. Stylish."James Suckling

Ground and juicy in the base and course, opens up with firm tannin with a good grip, shows many layers, in the back area still somewhat rough, still needs storage, but has very good potential."Falstaff

"Here's a wine that is completely new to me (but I am thrilled by the introduction). The 2012 Carla 6 is a spectacular expression of 100% Sangiovese with bursting berry and cherry aromas that give the wine an immense sense of buoyancy and vertical lift. Spice, leather, tobacco, cola, and licorice flood in at the rear and add to the wine's wide aromatic foundation. "A very pretty red with a silky and lightly austere tannic texture. Medium body, firm tannins and a focused finish. Delicious. This is a focused and gorgeous wine." James Suckling

"The 2013 Carla 6 is a pure expression of Sangiovese from a man who has waged a very public war against the Chianti Classico Consorzio and its regulations. This wine chooses to be an IGT Toscana instead. That rebellious spirit shaped the extraordinary personality of this wine. The bouquet reveals beautiful plum and dark cherry with succulent layers of spice and tobacco. Carla 6 shows great balance. There is both crispness and structural firmness at the back, and that solid tannic backbone should carry it through the next ten years of bottle aging." Robert Parker

Enormously complex and perfectly balanced in taste, velvety, fruity and with noticeable tannins, infinitely long. Carla 6 will be remembered. SUPERIORE.DE

"Marked by black currant, violet, vanilla and spice notes, with dense tannins underneath. Fresh, if a bit chunky, with a good dose of new oak lingering on the finish." Wine Spectator

"The 2014 Carla 6 is a beautiful expression of Sangiovese from Panzano in Chianti. The wine sports a rather lean and streamlined style, but don't be deceived because there is ample depth and power to hold up the rear. The bouquet is bright and caressing with wild cherry, dried cassis, rose bud and moist clay earth. That earthy quality is so beautifully indicative of the Chianti territory. The house style, with that extra extraction and richness, comes through loud and clear. The wine ages for 14 months partially in new oak and partially in cement vats." Robert Parker

"A muscular and rich red with tar, dark berry, bark and spice character. Full body, chewy and dense. Structured and tannic yet fresh at the same." James Suckling

"The 2014 Carla 6, La Massa's 100% Sangiovese, is fabulous. Super-expressive, bright and nuanced to its core, it possesses remarkable harmony and persistence. The dark red cherry, plum, mint and licorice flavors are beautifully delineated, and attractive floral notes gradually open up to add lift. This is the best vintage of the Carla 6 yet." • "Giorgio Primo" Rosso Toscana IGT 2014

“Giorgio Primo” Rosso Toscana IGT 2014

First growth the Fattoria La Massa. Complex aromas of berries, spices and pharmacy herbs. Smooth, juicy and long, the very appealing fruit on the palate. SUPERIORE.DE

"Powerful, sparkling ruby. Very finely drawn nose, of cherries and pomegranate and fresh plums. On the palate round, juicy, much smooth tannin, in the final saturated pressure, some wood overhang, which still has to be integrated." Falstaff

"This is another one of those special wines that I would not have pegged to the gray and soggy 2014 growing season. The 2014 Giorgio Primo is anything but introverted or shy. Indeed, the wine opens to spectacular intensity with a super dark and impenetrable appearance. That inky dark consistency segues to black pepper, spice, leather and blackberry preserves. The blend is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot, and the wine is aged in barrique (of which 80% is new) for 18 months. This is a great effort." Robert Parker

"A great nose off the bat with blackcurrant and blackberry as well as black olives and truffles. Full body, powerful and rich. Chewy yet polished tannins and a bright acidity." James Suckling

"La Massa and proprietor Giampaolo Motta move from strength to strength with the 2014 Giorgio Primo, a vivid, powerful wine that exudes class. Dark red plum, lavender and spice are all given extra energy by the supporting tannins. Hints of graphite, smoke, herbs and crushed rocks infuse the chiseled, mineral-driven finish. In 2014, Giorgio Primo is a knockout. That's all there is to it." VINOUS

First plant of the Fattoria La Massa. Complex aromas of berries, spices and pharmacy herbs. Smooth, juicy and long, the very appealing fruit on the palate. SUPERIORE.DE

"Deep dark ruby violet with black core. Concentrated, opulent fruit in the nose, hints of elderberries, ripe blackberries and mulberries, backed by cedar wood. It plays a grandiose role on the palate, dense, present tannin in the base and course, ripe berry fruit, very long aftertaste, spans a wide arch". Falstaff

"The 2013 Giorgio Primo is dark, powerful and inviting. Black cherry, plum, smoke, licorice and a touch of French oak make a strong first impression as the 2013 shows off its distinctive personality. Deceptively medium in body, the 2013 possesses notable intensity and overall structure. Black cherry, plum, smoke, lavender and graphite infuse the authoritative finish. The 2013 is a terrific Giorgio Primo." Antonio Galloni

"This is a truly sumptuous wine that stands as a tall testament to the winemaking talents of Giampaolo Motta, his vision for interpreting this vintage and his specific vineyard site in Panzano in Chianti. This standout wine brings Fattoria la Massa to a new level of accomplishment and opens an exciting new chapter of possibility. The 2013 Giorgio Primo is dark and impenetrable on first impact. The aromas accelerate slowly and grow evenly in power and intensity after a few quick swirls of the glass. The bouquet peels back with dark fruit aromas, baking spice and Mediterranean herb. The effect is seamless and smooth. A velvety texture is accented by full-bodied richness and just enough freshness to keep the palate energized. And, of course, this is just the beginning of a long cellar life." Robert Parker

“Carla 6” Sangiovese di Toscana IGT 2016

The rigorous selection has paid off: full of character and profound, Sangiovese shows its feminine side with sweet and soft contours of cherry and blackberry. Enormously complex and perfectly balanced on the palate, velvety, fruity and with noticeable tannins, infinitely long. SUPERIORE.DE

"Another highlight in this range, the 2016 Carla 6 (100% Sangiovese) emerges from a single parcel on the estate measuring under a hectare and planted on gray schist/sand soils. Sweet red cherry, chalk, cedar, spice and dried flowers convey energy and vibrancy." Vinous

"A tight and solid red with cherry and blackberry character and hints of black chocolate and wet earth. Some spices and flowers, as well. A solid and intense wine with super structure. Needs three or four years to soften. Try after 2021." James Suckling

"By appearances you would not guess that this is Sangiovese. The 2016 Carla 6 exudes sheer intensity, darkness and richness. From the fruity flavors of cherry and cassis to floral and earthy notes of rosebud and damp soil, this one's got it all, plus that tertiary note of natural rubber that I love. “Giorgio Primo” Rosso Toscana IGT 2016

Rich, concentrated red wine in Bordeaux style with the unmistakable signature of oenological advisor Stéphane Derenoncourt. Complex black fruit on the nose, along with rock, liquorice, camphor and graphite. On the palate of impressive smoothness, the fruit always juicy and centred, wonderful and almost perfect in structure, cut, elegance and length. SUPERIORE.DE

"Rich, dark ruby with purple. Dark blackberry fruit, with mulberries and cassis, very clear, very precise. Lots of dense tannin, exciting, very densely constructed, juicy, as if from a single mould." Falstaff

"A dense and rich red with blackcurrants, berries and chocolate, as well as undertones of fresh porcini mushrooms and wet earth, on both the nose and the palate. Full and flavorful. Chewy tannins. Better after 2020." James Suckling

"The 2016 Giorgio Primo is flat out stunning. It is also a rare Giorgio Primo in which Merlot takes the leading role, the last being 2007. A rush of blackberry jam, graphite, lavender, spice and menthol build as the 2016 shows off its potent, beautifully layered personality. Even with all of its fruit intensity, the 2016 retains terrific energy, tension and drive. All of the elements come together in a statuesque, arrestingly beautiful Giorgio Primo. It is an absolutely unforgettable wine from La Massa and proprietor Giampaolo Motta and his team." Vinous

"The consistency and depth of this wine is just incredible. Like the Carla 6, the 2016 Giorgio Primo shows an inky dark color, almost totally black, with penetrating fruit and long waves of rich fruit flavor throughout. George the First casts mesmerizing spells of spice, tar and smoke. This is another outstanding effort from Fattoria La Massa and its eccentric but visionary founder, Giampaolo Motta." Robert Parker

On the palate powerful, shows a lot of ripe berry fruit, beguiling, then opens with dense tannin, beautifully encased by sweet enamel, in the finale then quite present wood notes, balsamic."Falstaff

"Made with Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), Merlot (30%) and Petit Verdot(5%), the impeccable 2012 Giorgo Primo is attractive from every angle. In a recent past vintage, I had criticized this wine for being over thetop, but Giampaolo Motta has refined his winemaking approach to betterharness the elegance and finesse of these grapes. Don't get me wrong:The sheer power of the wine is proudly put on display. Dark fruitextraction is followed by bursting plum, blackberry and sweet spice. Idrank this wine over the course of 24 hours and was thrilled to see itsexciting evolution. With time, truffles, wet earth and even a touch ofsharp Pecorino cheese begin to emerge. If you are in the market for abold, age-worthy blockbuster from Tuscany, Giorgio Primo is for you." Robert Parker

"Beautiful, complex aromas of blueberry, blackberry and blacklicorice follow through to a full body, ultra-refined tannins and afinish that lasts for minutes. Give this a few years in the bottle tocompletely come together." James Suckling

About the winemakersFattoria La MassaTuscany | Chianti
    Fattoria La Massa

Giampaolo Motta is called a lateral thinker by many colleagues. In any case, he is always good for surprises. Born in Naples, he worked in renowned wineries in the Chianti Classico region. His favourite wines, however, were from Bordeaux. No wonder then that he soon found himself in famous chateaux. It was there that the idea was born that it must be possible to press red wines of the same quality in Tuscany.

In 1992 he was fortunate enough to purchase an old winery, the Fattoria La Massa, in the best location of Panzano in Chianti. "Conca d'Oro" - the golden bowl - is what the locals call this south-facing huge depression in the landscape, which looks like an oversized clam full of vines. The name, however, comes from the time when wheat was still cultivated here, which in the light of the afternoon sun made the natural amphitheatre glow golden. Today it is a lush green of the vines that have long dominated here. However, the Fattoria La Massa was already mentioned here with wine in documents in the 15th century.

For ten years Giampaolo Motta, with the help of the star oenologist Carlo Ferrini and Stéphane Derenoncourt from Bordeaux as advisors, experimented with the grape varieties laid down in the Consorzio Chianti Classico, with various clones and rootstock vines, Guyot and Cordon training and - finally, he surprisingly left the association. He did not want to be restricted anymore: "After ten years of work, I was not really happy with the result." Success soon proved him right, because his "Giorgo Primo", which originally featured varying proportions of the Bordeaux varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot or Alicante Bouschet, depending on the vintage, in addition to Sangiovese, climbed rapidly into the Olympus of Italian top wines and is now a pure Bordeaux cuvée with a main proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, which matures excellently in the Conca d'Oro. His "second wine" La Massa is a cuvée with Sangiovese as main variety and married with Bordeaux varieties. Named after his daughter Carla, this wine is a selection of the best Sangiovese grapes.

Giampaolo Motta never allowed himself to be subjected to the regulations of the BIO associations. Smiling, he explains "neither organic nor biodynamic - but logical and dynamic". "I live here and therefore have no interest in pesticides or systemic treatments" he adds.

When you enter his newly built cellar when the grapes are delivered, you see neither tanks nor barrels, but a chessboard floor made of black and white tiles. And on each side 6 stainless steel closures embedded in the floor. Nothing else. No hoses, no pumps. Everything here runs only by gravity from top to bottom. Because underneath these closures are the fermentation tanks, one floor below. Okay, this is different at harvest time. Because there are conveyor belts on the chessboard and lots of employees who sort the delivered grapes by hand, because only the best are allowed downstairs. Giampaolo Motta himself developed a uniquely gentle, sophisticated stirring system to push the mash down.

In Bordeaux, Motta had also met the architect Bernard Mazieres, who renovated Château Petrus, Mouton-Rothschild and Château Latour, among others - who probably paid much more than Giampaolo Motta, who simply invited and hosted the architect until he was overwhelmed by the charm of the landscape, as well as the charm, the attention to detail and the uncompromising nature of the host and began to plan. This too was probably rather surprising.

The most recent surprise came in November 2018, when Giampaolo Motta, by now successful and awarded worldwide, sold 40% each to the Tommasi wine group from Valpolicella and Ermen Minari, a manager of a French high rack logistics company, to enable further investments in vineyards, he announced. He will retain 20% and the management of the winery. The outstanding quality of La Massa's wines is therefore assured.
The Tommasi wine dynasty from Valpolicella has been buying or investing in vineyards across Italy for more than twenty years. In the Maremma at Poggio al Tufo, in Montalcino at Podere Casisano, in Basilicata at Azienda Paternoster, in Oltrepò Pavese at Tenuta Caseo and in Manduria at Masseria Surani.  SUPERIORE.DE

"Giampaolo Motta's Fattoria La Massa is one of my favorite estates in Panzano-in-Chainti. This tasting served as a happy reminder of why I love these wines so much. The 2012 Giorgio Prima is impeccable. It is a small miracle in what most agree was not an easy vintage. Mr. Motta evidently has that magic touch. I loved this set of new releases and was particularly thrilled to try a new wine: The IGT Toscana Carla 6 that left me extremely satisfied. In truth, I was floored by it."Robert Parker
