Terlaner Weißburgunder Alto Adige DOC 2007 Rarità

The choice of grape variety and vintage for the Terlan Winery's rarity wine are secrets that remain closely guarded for a long time - until a few weeks before the official presentation. In summer 2020, the Terlan Winery traditionally presented its new strictly limited rarity wine. The decision of the winery management fell on the Pinot Bianco 2007.

The rarity wine symbolizes Terlan's longevity: "The wines are first aged for almost a year in large wooden barrels, then they are left on the fine lees in 2,500-liter steel tanks to mature for a long time, before they are bottled and remain in the bottle for another year until they are ready to drink", Rudi Kofler, master cellarer, explains the complex production process. This method goes back to Sebastian Stocker, a former master cellarer, who - following the example of French viticulture - started to let the wines mature longer on the fine yeast.

At the moment, white wines of different varieties are stored in the small steel barrels, going back to the first rarity vintage in 1979. "The nose is impressively fresh, revealing a new olfactory component with each taste. Herbal notes of chamomile, lemon balm and lovage show up as well as hints of dried persimmon and apricots. At the same time, the multi-faceted bouquet also exhibits scents of bread crust and yeast plait paired with flint aromatics. Smooth and creamy on the palate with a strong, youthful acidity that nevertheless leaves a delicate impression and ideally complements the mineral tension. The finish is silky and elegant, but at the same time enormously powerful and deep," says Rudi Kofler.

The 2007 Pinot Blanc is the eighth rare wine to be stored under Kofler's expert direction. SUPERIORE.DE

"Sparkling, pale golden yellow with light green tones. Intense and layered nose, of white melon, tree-ripened champagne apple, underpinned by smoky mineral components, fresh and present. Fine and balanced on the attack, then builds in many layers, clear fruit, saline and very long lasting." Falstaff

"The 2007 Pinot Bianco Rarity is gorgeous. The wine spent ten years aging in large barrels on its lees, and today it needs a little time in the glass to unfold; but once it does, you realize the wait was well worth it. A complex mix of apricot and smoked almond skins opens further to reveal savory notes of ginger, dried yellow flowers, crushed stone and a whiff of salty sea air. It’s texturally stunning, seeming weighty at times and then remarkably fresh and lifted; while the longer it sits in the glass, the deeper it becomes. There’s an intriguing contrast of dry, concentrated white orchard fruits against a bitter coating of liquid florals with a mineral twang. The senses buzz with residual tension, like a reverberation of all the flavors and aromas experienced throughout." Vinous

"Subtle aromas of pineapple, pears, cooked figs and lemon curd. It’s full-bodied with rich, complex flavors of fruit, bread dough, pie crust and herbs. Hints of cream, too. Extremely flavorful. A unique white, aged one year in large wooden barrels, followed by eleven years in stainless steel tanks. No filtering or fining." James Suckling

"The 2007 Alto Adige Terlano Pinot Bianco Rarity is a work of true beauty. This aspirational wine offers incredible aromatic intensity and complexity with Meyer lemon, plantain or unripe banana, orchard fruit, sour crab apple and even a touch of freshly shucked peas. Of course, there is plenty of that characteristic chalky minerality that is so specific to wines made in the Italian Dolomites. The mouthfeel is broad and pliant with a large expanse. It shows much of the added volume and creaminess you can expect of a carefully aged wine. However, this wine never reveals its true age, and it would be almost impossible to guess that this is a 13-year-old white wine." Robert Parker
